Phasor measurement units(PMUs)are fundamental tools in the applications of modern power systems,where synchronized phasor estimations are needed.The accuracy and dynamic performance requirements for phasor,frequency,and rate of change of frequency(rOCOF)estimations are established in the IEEE Std.C37.118.1-2011 along with the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 a-2014,where two PMU performances are suggested:P class filters for applications requiring fast response and M class filters for applications requiring high rejection to aliased signals.In this paper,a methodology to design new phasor estimators that satisfy the P class and M class requirements in PMUs is presented.The proposed methodology is based on finite impulse response filters,brick-wall filters,and complex filter design concepts,where frequency range,time performance,harmonic rejection and out-of-band interference requirements are considered in its design.A comparative analysis using the reference model given by the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 is presented.The results show the effectiveness of the phasor estimators under steady-state and dynamic conditions according to the PMU standard,making them suitable tools for applications in power systems.

Mercury uptake and effects on growth in Jatropha curcas

The use of metal-accumulating plants for the phytoremediation of contaminated soils is gaining more attention. Mercury(Hg)-contaminated soils from historical gold mines represent a potential risk to human health and the environment. Therefore, Jatropha curcas plant, that has shown its tolerance to these environments, is a species of particular interest to implement phytoremediation techniques in gold mining sites. In this work, the behavior of J. curcas was assessed in different hydroponic cultures fortified with Hg at concentrations of 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 μg Hg/mL(T5, T10, T20, T40 and T80, respectively). After exposure,plant growth, net photosynthesis, leaf area, and Hg accumulation were determined and variables such as net Hg uptake, effective Hg accumulation, translocation and bioaccumulation factors were calculated. Accumulation of Hg in root and leaf tissues increased with respect to the Hg concentrations in the hydroponic culture, with statistically significant differences(p reatments. Moreover, Hg concentration in roots was 7 and 12-fold higher in average than in plant leaves and shoots, respectively. Many effects were found in the development of plants, especially related with loss of biomass and leaf area,with significant growth inhibition related to control values(> 50% with treatment T5).Moreover, percentage of inhibition was even higher(> 60%) with same treatment for net photosynthesis. Finally, it should be highlighted that for T40 and T80 treatments, plant growth and photosynthesis were almost completely depleted(88%–95%).

With the onset of a metabolic syndrome epidemic and the increasing life expectancy,erectile dysfunction(ED)has become a more common condition.As incidence and prevalence increase,the medical field is focused on providing more appropriate therapies.It is common knowledge that ED is a chronic condition that is also associated with a myriad of other disorders.Conditions such as aging,diabetes mellitus,hypertension,obesity,prostatic hypertrophy,and prostate cancer,among others,have a direct implication on the onset and progression of ED.Characterization and recognition of risk factors may help clinicians recognize and properly treat patients suffering from ED.One of the most reliable treatments for ED is penile prosthetic surgery.Since the introduction of the penile prosthesis(PP)in the early seventies,this surgical procedure has improved the lives of thousands of men,with reliable and satisfactory results.The aim of this review article is to characterize the epidemiology of men undergoing penile prosthetic surgery,with a discussion about the most common conditions involved in the development of ED,and that ultimately drive patients into electing to undergo PP placement.

On a Classical Theorem on the Diameter and Minimum Degree of a Graph

In this work, we obtain good upper bounds for the diameter of any graph in terms of its minimum degree and its order, improving a classical theorem due to Erd¨os, Pach, Pollack and Tuza.We use these bounds in order to study hyperbolic graphs(in the Gromov sense). To compute the hyperbolicity constant is an almost intractable problem, thus it is natural to try to bound it in terms of some parameters of the graph. Let H(n, δ_0) be the set of graphs G with n vertices and minimum degree δ_0, and J(n, Δ) be the set of graphs G with n vertices and maximum degree Δ. We study the four following extremal problems on graphs: a(n, δ_0) = min{δ(G) | G ∈ H(n, δ_0)}, b(n, δ_0) = max{δ(G) |G ∈ H(n, δ_0)}, α(n, Δ) = min{δ(G) | G ∈ J(n, Δ)} and β(n, Δ) = max{δ(G) | G ∈ J(n, Δ)}. In particular, we obtain bounds for b(n, δ_0) and we compute the precise value of a(n, δ_0), α(n, Δ) andβ(n, Δ) for all values of n, δ_0 and Δ, respectively.

Novel protective penile collar following inflatable penile prosthesis placement: the “Wang Collar”

Penile rehabilitation after inflatable penile prosthesis(IPP)implantation for the treatment of erectile dysfunction includes leaving the device partially inflated so as to preserve the penile length and to maintain hemostasis.With a partially inflated device,the penis becomes more sensitive and more susceptible to unintended insults during the immediate postoperative management.The“Wang Collar,”a device intended to protect the penis in the early postoperative period,is hereby described.Three hundred and forty-eight patients had the 44Wang Collar"included as part of their post-1 PP management from August 2014 to February 2019.The protective collar,devised from a polystyrene cup with the bottom removed,is secured with a tape over the previously dressed and partially inflated penis.In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this device,we conducted surveys on the perioperative staff at three different institutions.The“Wang Collar”has been found to be beneficial in the early postoperative care of patients.Based on the answers to our questionnaire,the perioperative personnel found this device to be highly protective,especially when transporting the patient after IPP surgery,easy to work with,and almost never bothersome or irritative to the patient.We present a novel penile device after IPP placement,which we have found to improve patient satisfaction in the postoperative period.In addition,it eases the care of the patient by the perioperative staff.It is now our routine to use this device after IPP surgery.Further research is necessary to evaluate whether this device can decrease postoperative wound complications.

Thorough Validation of a rotor Fault Diagnosis Methodology in Laboratory and Field Soft-Started Induction Motors

Induction motors are the most widespread rotating electrical machines in industry.Predictive maintenance of the motors is of crucial importance due to the fact that unexpected faults in those machines can lead to huge economic losses for the corresponding companies.Over recent years,there is an increasing use of industrial induction motors operated by different types of drives,which have different functionalities.Among them,the use of soft-starters has proliferated due to the inherent benefits provided by these drives:they damp the high starting currents,enabling the soft startup of the motors and avoiding undesirable commutation transients introduced by other starting modalities.In spite of these advantages,they do not avoid the possible occurrence of rotor damages,one of the most common faults in this type of motors.Few works have proposed predictive maintenance techniques that are aimed to diagnose the rotor condition in soft-started machines and even fewer have demonstrated the validity of their methods in real motors.This work presents,for the first time,the massive validation of a rotor fault diagnosis methodology in soft-started induction motors.Industrial and laboratory and induction motors started under different types of soft-starters and with diverse rotor fault conditions are considered in the work.The results prove the potential of the approach for the reliable assessment of the rotor condition in such machines.

Nesting innovations allow population growth in an invasive population of rose-ringed parakeets

Certain traits of recipient environments,such as the availability of limiting resources,strongly determine the establishment success and spread of non-native species.These limitations may be overcome through behavioral plasticity,allowing them to exploit alternative resources.Here,we show how a secondary cavity nester bird,the rose-ringed parakeet Psittacula krameri,innovates its nesting behavior as a response to the shortage of tree cavities for nesting in its invasive range in Tenerife(Canary Islands).We observed that some breeding pairs excavated their own nest cavities in palms,thus becoming primary cavity nester,whereas others occupied nests built with wood sticks by another invasive species,the monk parakeet Myiopsitta monachus.The use of these novel nesting strategies increased the number of breeding pairs by up to 52%over 6 years,contributing to a 128.8%increase of the whole population.Innovative nests were located at greater heights above ground and were more aggregated around conspecifics but did not result in greater breeding success than natural cavities.Occupation of monk parakeet colonies by rose-ringed parakeets also benefited the former species through a protective-nesting association against nest predators.Our results show how an invasive species innovate nesting behaviors and increase nest-site availability in the recipient environment,thus facilitating its population growth and invasion process.Potential behavioral innovations in other invasive rose-ringed parakeet populations may be overlooked,and should be considered for effective management plans.

Modeling gut neuro-epithelial connections in a novel microfluidic device

The intestinal lumen is filled with diverse chemical and physical stimuli.Intestinal epithelial cells sense these stimuli and signal to enteric neurons which coordinate a range of physiologic processes required for normal digestive tract function.Yet,the neuro-epithelial connections remain poorly resolved,in part because the tools for orchestrating interactions between these cellular compartments are lacking.We describe the development of a two-compartment microfluidic device for co-culturing enteric neurons with intestinal epithelial cells.The device contains epithelial and neuronal compartments connected by microgrooves.The epithelial compartment was designed for cell seeding via injection and confinement of intestinal epithelial cells derived from human intestinal organoids.We demonstrated that organoids planarized effectively and retained epithelial phenotype for over a week.In the second chamber we dissociated and cultured intestinal myenteric neurons including intrinsic primary afferent neurons(IPANs)from transgenic mice that expressed the fluorescent protein tdTomato.IPANs extended projections into microgrooves,surrounded and frequently made contacts with epithelial cells.The density and directionality of neuronal projections were enhanced by the presence of epithelial cells in the adjacent compartment.Our microfluidic device represents a platform that may,in the future,be used to dissect structure and function of neuro-epithelial connections in the gut and other organs(skin,lung,bladder,and others)in health and disease.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized heterogeneous catalysts have been evaluated in the catalytic dehydration of C(,monosaccharides into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF) using dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)as solvent.Sulfonic commercial resin Amberlyst-70 was the most active catalyst,which was ascribed to its higher concentration of sulfonic acid sites as compared with the other catalysts,and it gave 93 mol%yield of HMF from fructose in 1 h.With glucose as the starting material,which is a much more difficult reaction,the reaction conditions(time,temperature,and catalyst loading) were optimized for Amberlyst-70 by a response surface methodology,which gave a maximum HMF yield of 33 mol%at 147 °C with 23 wt%catalyst loading based on glucose and 24 h reaction time.DMSO promotes the dehydration of glucose into anhydroglucose,which acts as a reservoir of the substrate to facilitate the production of HMF by reducing side reactions.Catalyst reuse without a regeneration treatment showed a gradual but not very significant decay in catalytic activity.
