Role of coatings and materials of external fixation pins on the rates of pin tract infection:A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Infection at the pin tract is a frequent and feared complication of external fixators(EF).The type of pin material and coatings have been regarded as possibly influencing infection *** the last 20 years,few prospective clinical studies and systematic reviews addressed the role of coated pins on the rate of pin site infection in human clinical *** To assess the EF literature over the past 20 years on the clinical benefits of pins manufactured from varied materials and coating systems and their possible role in pin tract infection *** We performed a systematic review according to the PRISMA and PICOS guidelines using four scientific platforms:PubMed,LiLacs,SciELO,and *** searched the literature for related publications over the past 20 *** A literature search yielded 29 articles,among which seven met the inclusion *** studies compared stainless-steel pins and pins coated with hydroxyapatite(HA),titanium and *** pin tract infection definitions were arbitrary and not standardized among *** studies included a low number of patients in the analysis and used a short follow-up *** metaanalyses were carried out,comparing stainless steel vs silver pins,stainless steel vs HA-coated pins,and titanium vs HA-coated *** of this analysis resulted in statistically significant differences in pin tract infection *** Currently,no clinical evidence supports the advantage of EF pins manufactured with materials other than stainless steel or coated over uncoated pins in reducing the rates of pin tract infections.A standardized definition of pin tract infection in external fixation is still lacking.

Polynomial Generalizations and Combinatorial Interpretations for Sequences Including the Fibonacci and Pell Numbers

In this paper we present combinatorial interpretations and polynomials generalizations for sequences including the Fibonacci numbers, the Pell numbers and the Jacobsthal numbers in terms of partitions. It is important to mention that results of this nature were given by santos and Ivkovic in two papers published on the Fibonacci Quarterly, Polynomial generalizations of the Pell sequence and the Fibonacci sequence [1] and Fibonacci Numbers and Partitions [2] , and one, by santos, on Discrete Mathematics, On the Combinatorics of Polynomial generalizations of Rogers-Ramanujan Type Identities [3]. By these results one can see that from the q-series identities important combinatorial information can be obtained by a careful study of the two variable function introduced by Andrews in Combinatorics and Ramanujan's lost notebook [4].

Biomechanical Analysis of Implant Assisted-Overdentures with Variations in the Attachments Systems

The aim of this study was to assess the stress patterns on the peri-implant zone and residual alveolar ridge in different overdenture attachment system designs by the photoelasticity method. Four attachments systems were tested: O-ring, ERA, Bar-clip, and Bar-clip/O-ring association. The prostheses were loaded with 100 N in five pre-determined points and the photoelastic model was evaluated by a circular polariscope. The anterior load, O-ring, and ERA showed better stress distribution in relation to the bars systems, which presented stress levels surrounding implants. The molar load, Bar-clip/O-ring association, presented the biggest stress concentration on the peri-implant region in relation to the others. When the second molar was loaded, there was a concentration of stress in the alveolar ridge in all situations analyzed. Within the limitation of this “in vitro” study, it could be concluded that there were biomechanical differences among the attachments systems analyzed, principally between isolated and the bars systems. The O-ring showed better stress distribution and the Bar-clip/O-ring showed higher stress concentration.

Gold-iron oxide nano-heterostructures with a clear and well-defined morphology were prepared via a seed-assisted method. The synthesis process and the events of heterogeneous nucleation during the decomposition of the iron precursor were carefully studied in order to understand the mechanism of the reaction and to tailor the architecture of the fabricated heterostructures. When employing Au seeds of 3 and 5 nm, nanoparticles with a dimer-like morphology were produced due to the occurrence of a single iron oxide nucleation event. Otherwise, multi-nucleation events could be favored by two mechanisms:(i) by the incorporation of a reducing agent and the slowing down of the heating protocol, leading to a core-shell system;(ii) by the increase of the Au seed size to 8 nm, leading to a flower-like system. Further increase of the Au seed size to 12 nm using similar synthesis conditions promotes the homogeneous nucleation and growth of the iron oxide phase, without formation of heterostructures. An in-depth study was performed on the gold-iron oxide heterostructures to confirm the epitaxial growth of the oxide domain over the Au seed and to analyze the elemental distribution of the components within the heterostructures. Finally, it was found that the modification of the plasmonic properties of the Au nanoparticles are strongly influenced by the architecture of the heterostructure, with a more pronounced damping effect for the systems produced after multi-nucleation events.

Soil boron fertilization:The role of nutrient sources and rootstocks in citrus production

Boron （B） is a key element for citrus production, especially in tropical regions, where the nutrient availability is commonly low in the soil. In addition, information about doses, fertilizer sources, methods of application, and particularly, differential nutrient demand of scion/rootstock combinations are required for efficient fertilization of commercial groves. In a non-irri- gated sweet orange orchard （cv. Natal）, grafted onto Rangpur lime, Swingle citrumelo or Sunki mandarin, we studied the application of two sources of B： boric acid （17% B, soluble in water） and ulexite （12% B, partiaJly soluble in water） at four levels of supply （control without B, and soil application of 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B）. The experiment was carried out for three years （2004-2006）. Boron availability in the soil and concentration in the leaves, as well as the fruit yield and quality of trees were evaluated. Soil B extracted with hot water and total leaf B positively correlated with doses of the nutrient applied to the trees. Levels of B in the soil and in the leaves did not vary with fertilizer sources. Fruit yield of trees grafted onto Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo was more responsive to B doses than those grafted onto Sunki mandarin. The maximum fruit yield of trees grafted onto Swingle was obtained with 3.2 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B, and leaf B level of 280 mg kg-1 that point out to a highest demand for B when this combination was compared with other rootstocks. Furthermore, fertilization with B did not affect the quality of fruits, but correlated with B and potassium （K） concentrations in the leaves. These results also support that the current recommendations for levels of B in leaves should be revisited.

Biology of the aphid Therioaphis maculata was studied on alfalfa （Medicago sativa L.）, including four resistant （Mesa-Sirsa, CUF101, Baker and Lahontan） and two susceptible （ARC and Caliverde） alfalfa cultivars, and one of the most cropped Brazilian cultivars, Crioula. Under controlled conditions, antibiosis （i.e., reduced longevity, fecundity and increased mortality of the aphid） was observed mainly on the resistant alfalfa cultivars, except on Lahontan. Crioula seemed to be tolerant to aphids. Present data support geographic limitation usage of cultivars, and we suggest Baker and Mesa-Sirsa as sources of antibiosis, and provide biological information of a tropical T. maculata biotype on alfalfa.

Valeriana eichle riana (C. A. Muller) Graebner pollen are described and documented, used optical and scanning eletronic microscopy. We found that the current descriptions available goes this pollen disagree with the general pollinic pattern of the genera. Consequently, we conclude that the previous work in this area have taxonomical errors leading to inappropiate paleoenvironmental interpretations.
