Batesian mimicry is the process in which harmless species adopt the appearance of a dangerous, aposematic *** some prey species,both Batesian mimetic and non-Batesian morphs coexist,presupposing that both morphs have to be evolutionarily *** viperine snake, Natrix maura,exhibits a zigzag dorsal pattern and antipredatory behavior that mimics European *** snake also has a striped dorsal pattern that coexists with the zigzag *** have examined whether individuals belonging to different geographically structured clades were more likely to exhibit a certain dorsal pattern,and whether the zigzag pattern has a protective function by exposing artificial snakes to predation in natural environments,in addition to comparing antipredatory behavior between zigzag and striped snakes also in natural *** results indicate that the striped pattern was not geographically structured,but *** predators less frequently attacked zigzag plasticine models than striped or unpatterned *** detected a shift in antipredator behavior between the 2 morphs,as Batesian mimicking *** responded to an approaching potential predator by remaining immobile or fleeing at shorter distances than did striped *** conclude that Batesian mimics maintain the cryptic and aposematic value by resembling vipers,whereas in open habitats the non-Batesian mimic has altered its antipredator behavior to maintain its fitness.

Impact of socioeconomic and health-related factors on consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in spain in 2006, 2011 and 2017

Objective: Complementary and alternative medicine use and type of use may be influenced by sociodemographic and economic determinants through which we could identify characteristics of patients with greater trend to use it. This paper aims to describe the changes in the consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in spain for three time points in order to discern changes in rate of consumption, associated factors and whether their use has been affected by a period of economic ***: This study utilized 2006, 2011 and 2017 cross-sectional data from the spanish National Health survey, a nationally representative survey of the population aged more than 15 years old and resident in spain. Independent bivariate and multivariate descriptive analyses for each of the 3 years studied were ***: The rate of consumption of both homeopathic and natural remedies has decreased over the periods studied. In spite of this decrease, the consumer profile appears to remain stable over the three periods. The sociodemographic factors associated with their consumption were being female, being 30–64 years old, being separated/divorced, having higher education qualifications, being employed and belonging to a higher social class. Psychiatric morbidity, chronic health problems such as pain, mental health problems or malignant tumors, and absence of major cardiovascular events were the clinical factors ***: It can be concluded that beyond the economic situation, the use of homeopathic and natural remedies obeys to the needs of the patients related to their state of health and the response they receive from the health system. It may be that women have different needs and expectations of the healthcare system and, given this breach of expectations, seek remedy to alleviate their needs outside the system and conventional medicine.

Transient Charge Trapping in Eu^(3+)-Doped Nanocomposites by Ultrafast Laser Excitation

Eu^3＋ was incorporated as probe ions into nanocomposite glasses, such as metal silver doped phosphate glass and crystalline nanocomposites si-enriched siO2 glass. Luminescence studies show that the doped europium ions are present as trivalent Eu^3＋ , and are distributed in the matrix on the boundary surface of nanoparticles. The valence switching from Eu^3＋ to Eu^2＋ was observed in si-siO2 nanocomposites when ultrafast laser excitation was applied. In silver metal nan-oparticles embedded aluminophosphate glass, a time-resolved ultrafast degenerate-four-wave-mixing （DFWM） experiment shows enhanced third-order nonlinearity at zero-delay time, followed by a bell-like signal buildup. It is attributed to the creation of electronic polaron and vibronic Wannier-Mott exciton （WME）. In europium codoped sample, however, the bell-like signal is depressed. All the above observations are interpreted as the result of a strong Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons produced inside the nanoparticles by laser excitation and Eu^3＋ ions residing near the surface. The trivalent europium ions play the role as positive boundary charges attracting electrons. This results in temporary formation of Eu^2＋ , and blocks the resonant tunneling transition in the silver-glass system to avoid creating large radius polaron.

The deleterious innate attribute of Ti6 Al4 V, the workhorse material among the alloy series of titanium is its incompetent tribo-behavior. Infinite surface modification techniques, viz., the accretion of adherent appendage layers, diffusion hardening, infusion of residual stresses, microstructural evolution, and phase transformations were attempted to enhance the wear resistance of the alloy. The need lies to establish a bridge between the indigenous material properties and the tribo-characteristics of Ti6 Al4 V so that the enforced improvement techniques can raise the barriers of its applicability. A critical review of the microstructural transitions, mechanisms governing tribo-behavior and the parametric conditions leading to material removal at dry sliding conditions of Ti6 Al4 V, falls under the scope of this manuscript. Hence, the prime focus of the approach is to impart a clear-cut perception of the minute variations in mechanical, metallurgical, and tribological characteristics of the alloy at interactive instances with distinct counter-body surfaces.

Depth of closure:New calculation method based on sediment data

Obtaining depth of closure(DoC) in an accurate manner is a fundamental issue for coastal engineering,since good results for coastal structures and beach nourishment depend mainly on DoC. Currently, there are two methods for obtaining the DoC, mathematical formulations and profile surveys. However, these methods can incur important errors if one does not take into account the characteristics and morphology of the area, or if one does not have a sufficiently long time series. In this work the DoC is obtained from the break in the trend of the sediment with the depth, that is, in general with the increase of the depth a decrease in the size of the sediment takes place. However, at one point this tendency changes and the size increases, and then decreases again. When comparing the point where the minimum sediment size occurs before the increase, it is observed that the error incurred is small compared to other methods. If the standard Deviation of Depth Change(sDDC) method is considered as the most accurate method, the error incurred by the proposed method is less than 7%. In addition, it can be seen that the dispersion of the sediment method always occurs outside the zone of bar movement. Whereas in the methods of profiles survey(using 2 cm precision profiles), sometimes the DoC is obtained within the active zone of bar movement. In addition, where the relative minimum of the median sediment size is found, and the sizes of 0.063 and 0.125 mm predominate in the composition of the sample. Therefore, this new method allows the precise location of the DoC to be obtained in a fast and simple way. Furthermore, this method has the advantage that it is not affected by the modifications that may be experienced by both the study area and the cross-shore beach profile.

The Effect of Laser Ablation Pulse Width and Feed speed on Necrosis and surface Damage of Cortical Bone

Bone cutting is of importance in orthopaedic surgery but is also challenging due to its nature of brittleness—where severe mechanical and thermal damages can be introduced easily in conventional *** machining is a new technology that can allow for complex cut geometries whilst minimising surface defects i.e.,smearing,which occur in mechanical ***,comparative studies on the influence of lasers with different pulse characteristics on necrotic damage and surface integrity have not been reported *** paper for the first time investigates the effects of laser type on the necrotic damage and surface integrity in fresh bovine cortical bone after ex-situ laser *** lasers of different pulse widths,i.e.,picosecond,nanosecond and continuous wave lasers have been investigated with different feed speeds tested to study the machining *** cutting temperature,and geometrical outputs have been measured to investigate the thermal influence on the cooling behaviour of the bone samples while high-speed imaging was used to compare the material removal mechanisms between a pulsed and continuous wave ***,an in-depth histological analysis of the subsurface has revealed that the nanosecond laser caused the largest necrotic depth,owing to the high pulse frequency limiting the dissipation of *** has also been observed that surface cracks positioned perpendicular to the trench direction were produced after machining by the picosecond laser,indicative of the photomechanical effect induced by plasma ***,the choice of laser type(i.e.,in terms of its pulse width and frequency)needs to be critically considered for appropriate application during laser osteotomy with minimum damage and improved healing.

Methanol extract of Desmodium gangeticum DC root mimetic post-conditioning effect in isolated perfused rat heart by stimulating muscarinic receptors

Objective:To evaluate pharmacological mimetic action of herbal extract Desmodium gangeticum (DC) roots on ischemia reperfusion ***:With the help of Langendroff perfusion technique,ischemic post condition(POC) mimetic action of DG methanol root extract was evaluated and compared by using standard drugs that acts as muscarinic receptor agonist and antagonist,namely acetylcholine(Ach) and atropine(Atr) respectively in an isolated rat heart. Results:The physiological parameters like left ventricular developed pressure,end diastolic pressure and working index of isolated rat heart showed significant recovery in DG root extract administrated rat heart,similar to the recovery by *** results showed muscarinic receptor agonist like action for DG methanol root extract,confirmed in rat heart by muscarnic receptor agonist(acetylcholine) and anatoginst(atropine).Administration of DC root extract prior to reperfusion showed better antioxidant status in myocardial tissue homogenate and mitochondrial,complemented by the levels of cardiac specific marker proteins in myocardial tissue and *** though DG methanol root extract mimics its action similar to that of Ach,the myocardial protection mediated by the extract was superior to Ach,due to the presence of antioxidants in the crude ***:DG methanol root extract provides myocardial protection towards IRI by stimulating muscarinic receptors.

One-year survival in recipients older than 50 bridged to heart transplant with Impella 5.5 via axillary approach

BACKGROUND Optimizing patients with advanced heart failure before orthotopic heart transplantation(OHT), especially in patients greater than 50 years old, is imperative to achieving successful post-transplant outcomes. Complications are well-described for patients bridged to transplant(BTT) with durable left ventricular assist device(LVAD) support. Given the lack of data available in older recipients after the recent increase in mechanical support use, we felt it crucial to report our center’s one-year outcomes in older recipients after heart transplantation with percutaneously placed Impella 5.5 as a *** Forty-nine OHT patients were supported with the Impella 5.5 intended as a bridge between December 2019 and October 2022 at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Data were extracted from the electronic health record at baseline and during their transplant episode of care after Institutional Review Boards approval as exempt for retrospective data *** Thirty-eight patients aged 50 or older were supported with Impella 5.5 as BTT. Ten patients underwent heart and kidney transplantation within this cohort. The median age at OHT was 63(58–68) years, with 32 male(84%) and six female patients(16%). Etiology was divided into ischemic(63%) and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy(37%). The baseline median ejection fraction was 19%(15–24). Most patients were in blood group O(60%), and 50% were diabetic. The average duration of support was 27 days(range 6–94). The median duration of follow-up is 488 days(185–693). For patients that have reached the 1-year follow-up timeframe(22 of 38, 58%), the 1-year post-transplant survival is 95%.CONCLUsION Our single-center data provides awareness for using the Impella 5.5 percutaneously placed axillary support device in older heart failure patients in cardiogenic shock as a bridge to transplantation. One-year survival outcomes after heart transplantation are excellent despite the older recipient’s age and prolonged pre-transplant support.
