Modelling fuel loads of understorey vegetation and forest floor components in pine stands in NW Spain

In this study,310 destructively sampled plots were used to develop two equation systems for the three main pine species in NW Spain(P.pinaster;P.radiata and P.sylvestris):one for estimating loads of understorey fuel components by size and condition(live and dead)and another one for forest floor fuels.Additive systems of equations were simultaneously fitted for estimating fuel loads using overstorey,understorey and forest floor variables as regressors.The systems of equations included both the effect of pine species and the effect of understorey compositions dominated by ferns-brambles or by woody species,due to their obvious structural and physiological differences.In general,the goodness-of-fit statistics indicated that the estimates were reasonably robust and accurate for all of the fuel fractions.The best results were obtained for total understorey vegetation,total forest floor and raw humus fuel loads,with more than 76%of the observed variability explained,whereas the poorest results were obtained for coarse fuel loads of understory vegetation with a 53%of observed variability explained.To reduce the overall costs associated with the field inventories necessary for operational use of the models,the additive systems were fitted again using only overstorey variables as potential regressors.Only relationships for fine(<6 mm)and total understorey vegetation and total forest floor fuel loads were obtained,indicating the complexity of the forest overstorey-understorey and overstorey-forest floor relationships.Nevertheless,these models explained around 52%of the observed variability.Finally,equations estimating the total understorey vegetation and the total forest floor fuel loads based only on canopy cover were fitted.These models explained only 26%-32%of the observed variability;however,their main advantage is that although understorey vegetation in forested landscapes is largely invisible to remote sensing,canopy cover can be estimated with moderate accuracy,allowing for landscape-scale estimates of total fuel lo

Background Artificial insemination(AI)is a routine breeding technology in animal reproduction.Nevertheless,the temperature-sensitive nature and short fertile lifespan of ram sperm samples hamper its use in AI.In this sense,nanotechnology is an interesting tool to improve sperm protection due to the development of nanomaterials for AI,which could be used as delivery vehicles.In this work,we explored the feasibility of vitamin E nanoemulsion(NE)for improving sperm quality during transport.Results With the aim of evaluating this proposal,ejaculates of 7 mature rams of Manchega breed were collected by artificial vagina and extended to 60×10^(6)spz/mL in AndromedR.Samples containing control and NE(12 mmol/L)with and without exogenous oxidative stress(100μmol/L Fe2+/ascorbate)were stored at 22 and 15℃and motility(CASA),viability(YO-PRO/PI),acrosomal integrity(PNA-FITC/PI),mitochondrial membrane potential(Mitotracker Deep Red 633),lipoperoxidation(C11 BODIPY 581/591),intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS)production and DNA status(SCSAR)monitored during 96 h.Our results show that NE could be used to maintain ram spermatozoa during transport at 15 and 22℃for up to 96 h,with no appreciable loss of kinematic and physiological characteristics of freshly collected samples.Conclusions The storage of ram spermatozoa in liquid form for 2-5 d with vitamin E nanoemulsions may lead more flexibility to breeders in AI programs.In view of the potential and high versatility of these nanodevices,further studies are being carried out to assess the proposed sperm preservation medium on fertility after artificial insemination.

Bigger or long-winged male common crossbills exhibit redder carotenoid-based plumage coloration

Carotenoid-based ornaments are often considered reliable(honest)individual condition signals because their expression implies physiological costs unaffordable for low-quality animals(handicap signals).Recently,it has been suggested that efficient cell respiration is mandatory for producing red ketocarotenoids from dietary yellow carotenoids.This implies that red colorations should be entirely unfalsifiable and independent of expression costs(index signals).In a precedent study,male common crossbills,Loxia curvirostra,showing a red plumage reported higher apparent survival than those showing yellowish-orange colors.The plumage redness in this species is due to ketocarotenoid accumulation in feathers.Here,we correlated the male plumage redness(a 4-level visual score:yellow,patchy,orange,and red)and the body morphology in more than 1,ooo adult crossbills captured in 3 Iberian localities to infer the mechanisms responsible for color evolution.A principal component analysis summarized morphometry of 10 variables(beak,wing,tarsus length,etc.).The overall body size(PC1)and the length of flight feathers regarding body size(Pc3)showed significant positive relationships with plumage redness.Plumage redness was barely correlated with bill shape measures,suggesting no constraint in acquiring carotenoids from pine cones.However,large body sizes or proportionally long flying feathers could help carotenoid acquisition via social competition or increased foraging ranges.Proportionally longer flight feathers might also be associated with a specific cell respiration profile that would simultaneously favor flying capacities and enzymatic transformations needed for ketocarotenoid synthesis.Such a phenotypic profile would agree with the hypothesis of ketocarotenoid-based colors acting as individual quality index signals.

Deep learning for land use and land cover classification from the Ecuadorian Paramo.

The paramo,plays an important role in our ecosystems as They balance the water resources and can retain substantial quantities of carbon.This research was carried out in the province of Tungurahua,specifically the Quero district.The aim is to develop a classification of the land use land cover(LULC)in the paramo using satellite imagery using several classifiers and determine which one obtains the best performance,for which three different approaches were applied:Pixel-Based Image Analysis(PBIA),Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis(GEOBIA),and a Deep Neural Network(DNN).Various parameters were used,such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI),the Bare Soil Index(BSI),texture,altitude,and slope.Seven classes were used:paramo,pasture,crops,herbaceous vegetation,urban,shrubrainland,and forestry plantations.The data was obtained with the help of onsite technical experts,using geo-referencing and reference maps.Among the models used the highest-ranked was DNN with an overall precision of 87.43%,while for the paramo class specifically,GEOBIA reached a precision of 95%.

Deep brain stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder:A systematic review of worldwide experience after 20 years

BACKGROUND Twenty years after its first use in a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD),the results confirm that deep brain stimulation(DBS)is a promising therapy for patients with severe and resistant forms of the disorder.Nevertheless,many unknowns remain,including the optimal anatomical targets,the best stimulation parameters,the long-term(LT)effects of the therapy,and the clinical or biological factors associated with response.This systematic review of the articles published to date on DBS for OCD assesses the short and LT efficacy of the therapy and seeks to identify predictors of response.AIM To summarize the existing knowledge on the efficacy and tolerability of DBS in treatment-resistant OCD.METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted in the PubMed,Cochrane,Scopus,and ClinicalTrials.gov databases from inception to December 31,2020,using the following strategy:“(Obsessive-compulsive disorder OR OCD)AND(deep brain stimulation OR DBS).”Clinical trials and observational studies published in English and evaluating the effectiveness of DBS for OCD in humans were included and screened for relevant information using a standardized collection tool.The inclusion criteria were as follows:a main diagnosis of OCD,DBS conducted for therapeutic purposes and variation in symptoms of OCD measured by the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive scale(Y-BOCS)as primary outcome.Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics.RESULTS Forty articles identified by the search strategy met the eligibility criteria.Applying a follow-up threshold of 36 mo,29 studies(with 230 patients)provided information on short-term(ST)response to DBS in,while 11(with 155 patients)reported results on LT response.Mean follow-up period was 18.5±8.0 mo for the ST studies and 63.7±20.7 mo for the LT studies.Overall,the percentage of reduction in Y-BOCS scores was similar in ST(47.4%)and LT responses(47.2%)to DBS,but more patients in the LT reports met the criteria for response(defined as a reduction in Y-BOCS scores>35%:ST,60.6%vs LT,70.7%).According

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest(OHCA)is one of the three leading causes of death in industrialized countries.[1,2]Some studies have described the impact of the first COVID-19 pandemic wave in terms of the number of cases and OHCA survival rates in various regions,[3-5]but few have addressed the relationship between the successive phases and how they affected OHCA.[6,7]The 14-d cumulative incidence peaked at more than 990 cases,with these rates remaining above 200 for an eight-month period between 15 march 2020 and 15 march 2021 in Madrid,Spain.

Retinal and optic nerve diseases are degenerative ocular pathologies which lead to irreversible visual loss. Since the advanced therapies availability, cell-based therapies offer a new all-encompassing approach. Advances in the knowledge of neuroprotection, immunomodulation and regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) have been obtained by several preclinical studies of various neurodegenerative diseases. It has provided the opportunity to perform the translation of this knowledge to prospective treatment approaches for clinical practice. Since 2008, several first steps projecting new treatment approaches, have been taken regarding the use of cell therapy in patients with neurodegenerative pathologies of optic nerve and retina. Most of the clinical trials using MSCs are in Ⅰ/Ⅱ phase, recruiting patients or ongoing, and they have as main objective the safety assessment of MSCs using various routes of administration. However, it is important to recognize that, there is still a long way to go to reach clinical trials phase Ⅲ-Ⅳ. Hence, it is necessary to continue preclinical and clinical studies to improve this new therapeutic tool. This paper reviews the latest progress of MSCs in human clinical trials for retinal and optic nerve diseases.

Molecular Mechanisms of Ethylene-Auxin Interaction

During the century-long history of plant hormone research, the focus in this area has shifted from the original physi- ological experiments to molecular, genetic, biochemical, and, more recently, genomic approaches. During this jour- ney, we have learned about the many effects these natural compounds have on plant growth and development at the morphological and molecular levels. We have also uncov- ered how these molecules are sensed by the plant cell and how they trigger signaling cascades that relay information to the nucleus, ultimately culminating in a transcriptional cas- cade. With this fundamental knowledge at hand, the main efforts in the field have turned towards a more integrative systems approach, in which the function of a hormone is considered in the context of the complex and dynamic net of interactions with other hormones or, more broadly, with other developmental and environmental signals. Initially, due to the complexity of the problem, most crosstalk studies have focused on pairwise interactions between two or few hormones. Special attention has been given to the interac- tions between ethylene and auxin, perhaps in part because of the experimental tractability of some of the processes in which the interaction between these two hormones is most manifested. An excellent review has been recently written describing the many different processes in which these two hormones are known to interact, either synergistically, such as root growth inhibition, or antagonistically, as is the case for lateral root formation （Muday et al., 2012）. Rather than following this process-centered approach, herein we decided to focus on the molecular mechanisms involved in the inter- action between ethylene and auxin. We take a closer look at the best-known transcriptional and posttranscriptional points of interaction, as well as revisit the most recent experimental findings that suggested additional levels of ethylene-auxin crosstalk.

Experimental study on lightweight expanded clay at particle level:Breakage of isolated grains

In this study,more than 1500 particles of lightweight expanded clay aggregate(LECA)are individually loaded up to breakage,following different patterns of contact(from 2 to 7)using a purpose-built apparatus.Consequently,a statistical model for predicting the number of fragments into which a grain breaks as a function of the number of contacts and their diameter is proposed.The number of fragments is found to follow a statistical binomial-type distribution function that depends on the number of contacts.In addition,a model based on Bayesian networks,capable of assessing the number of fragments and their size(measured as normalized weight)as a function of the number of contacts,is implemented.The proposed method is applicable when performing discrete element method(DEM)simulations on granular media in which grain breakage plays a relevant role.
