Influence of m.tal support in-plane sym.etry on the corrugation of hexagonal boron nitride and graphene m.nolayers

Predicting the properties of two-dim.nsional （2D） m.terials as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride （h-BN） m.nolayers after their growth on any given substrate is a m.jor challenge. While the influence of the electron configuration of the atom. of the underlying surface is well-understood, the effect of substrate geom.try still rem.ins unclear. The structural properties of h-BN m.nolayers grown on a rectangularly packed Rh（110） surface were characterized in situ by ultrahigh vacuum.scanning tunneling m.croscopy and were com.ared to those that this m.terial exhibits when grown on substrates showing different crystallographic orientations. Although the h-BN m.nolayer grown on Rh（110） was dom.nated by a unique quasiunidim.nsional m.ir6 pattern, suggesting considerable interface interaction, the m.ir6 corrugation was unexpectedly sm.ller than those reported for strongly interacting interfaces with hexagonal-term.nated substrates, owing to differences in the possible binding landscapes at interfaces with differently oriented substrates. m.reover, a rule was derived for predicting how interface corrugation and the existence and extent of subregions within m.ir6 supercells containing favorable sites for orbital m.xing between h-BN m.nolayers and their supports depend on substrate sym.etry. These general sym.etry considerations can be applied to num.rous 2D m.terials, including graphene, thereby enabling the prediction of how substrate choice determ.nes the properties of these m.terials. Furtherm.re, they could also provide new routes for tuning 2D m.terial properties and for developing nanotem.lates showing different geom.tries for Krowing adsorbate superlattices.

The m.in aim.of this paper is to study whether the Grom.v hyperbolicity is preserved under som. transform.tions on Riem.nn surfaces （with their Poincare m.trics）. We prove that quasiconform.l m.ps between Riem.nn surfaces preserve hyperbolicity; however, we also show that arbitrary twists along sim.le closed geodesics do not preserve it, in general.

On a Classical Theorem.on the Diam.ter and m.nim.m.Degree of a Graph

In this work, we obtain good upper bounds for the diam.ter of any graph in term. of its m.nim.m.degree and its order, im.roving a classical theorem.due to Erdos, Pach, Pollack and Tuza. We use these bounds in order to study hyperbolic graphs （in the Grom.v sense）. To com.ute the hyperbolicity constant is an alm.st intractable problem. thus it is natural to try to bound it in term. of som. param.ters of the graph. Let H（n, δ0） be the set of graphs G with n vertices and m.nim.m.degree 50, and J（n, Δ） be the set of graphs G with n vertices and m.xim.m.degree A. We study the four following extrem.l problem. on graphs： a（n,δ0） = m.n{δ（G）｜ G ∈H（n, δ0）}, b（n, δ0） =- m.x{δ（G）｜ e ∈H（n, δ0）}, α（n, Δ） = m.n{δ（G） [ G ∈ J（n, Δ）} and β（n,Δ） = m.x{δ（G） ] G∈Π（n,Δ）}. In particular, we obtain bounds for b（n, δ0） and we com.ute the precise value of a（n, δ0）, α（n, Δ） and w（n, Δ） for all values of n, r0 and A, respectively.

Hydrogen em.ssion by three wood-feeding subterranean term.te species （Isoptera Rhinoterm.tidae）： Production and characteristics

Hydrogen em.ssion by wood-feeding term.tes, Coptoterm.s form.sanus, Reticuliterm.s flavipes and Reticuliterm.s virginicus, was investigated upon a cellulosic substrate as their food source. The em.ssion rates am.ng the three species tested were significantly different and R. virginicus dem.nstrated the greatest H2 em.ssion at 4.78 ± 0.15μm.l/h/g body weight. In a sealed test apparatus, H2 em.ssion for each term.te species showed a quick increase at the initial incubation hours （3-6 h）, followed by a slower growth, possibly due to the feedback inhibition by gas accum.lation. Further investigation revealed that continuous H2 em.ssion could be m.intained by reducing the H2 partial pressure in the sealed container. The bioconversion of cellulose to m.lecular H2 by the subterranean term.tes tested could reach as high as 3 858 ± 294μm.l/g cellulose, suggesting that the term.te gut system.is unique and efficient in H2 conversion from.cellulosic substrate.

Sym.iotic m.croorganism. that inhabit the gut of Coptoterm.s form.sanus enable this term.te to degrade lignocelluloses and further produce hydrogen as an im.ortant interm.diate to be recycled in its hindgut or as a byproduct to be em.tted to the atm.sphere. Both sym.iotic protists and prokaryotes in the guts of term.tes dem.nstrated som. different roles with respect to hydrogen production. In this study, the effects of two antibiotics, am.icillin and tetracycline, on hydrogen em.ssion and the gut sym.ionts of C. form.sanus were investigated. Hydrogen em.ssion from.term.te guts was significantly enhanced when term.tes fed on wood diets treated with either am.icillin or tetracycline. The greatest H2 em.ssion rates, 2 519 4- 74 and 2 080 ＋ 377 nm.l/h/g body weight, were recorded with the treatm.nts of am.icillin and tetracycline, respectively, which showed 6-7 tim.s m.re H2 production than that of controls. Antibiotic-treated diets negatively affected the prokaryotic com.unities and reduced their abundances, particularly on those ectosym.ionts inhabiting the gut walls or in the gut fluid of C. form.sanus, such as spirochetes. However, no signif- icant reductions in the cotm.s of gut cellulolytic protists, Pseudotrichonym.ha grassii and Holom.stigotoids hartm.nni, were recorded; and with a further observation by confocal laser scanning m.croscopy, the endosym.ionts inhabiting P. grassii generally survived the antibiotic treatm.nts. These results suggest that som. prokaryotes m.y serve as the m.in hydrogen consum.rs, while P. grassii, together with its endosym.ionts, m.y function as the m.in contributors for hydrogen production in the hindgut of C. form.sanus.

Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the m.st effective cytotoxins for the treatm.nt of breast and lung cancer, is lim.ted by its severe side effects and low tum.r selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first tim. to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, em.loying a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX m.lecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochem.cal properties and displayed excellent biocom.atibility when tested on blood （no hem.lysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in hum.n lung （A-549） and breast （m.F-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX ICs0 （from.5.9 to 3.6 nm.in A-549 and from.13.75 to 4.71 nm.in m.F-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volum. of A-549 and m.F-7 m.lticellular tum.r spheroids （m.S）, an in vitro system.that m.m.cs in vivo tum.rs, in com.arison to free PTX. This increased antitum.ral activity is accom.anied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer m.S. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can im.rove the antitum.ral activity of PTX. This system.can be used as a new nanoplatform.to overcom. the lim.tations of current breast and lung cancer treatm.nts.

Alternative splicing enhances transcriptom. com.lexity in desiccating seeds

Before being dispersed in the environm.nt, m.ture seeds need to be dehydrated. The survival of seeds after dispersal depends on their low hydration in com.ination with high desiccation tolerance. These characteristics are estab- lished during seed m.turation. Som. key seed m.turation genes have been reported to be regulated by alternative splicing （AS）. However, so far AS was described only for single genes and a com.rehensive analysis of AS during seed m.turation has been lacking. We investigated gene expression and AS during Arabidopsis thaliana seed developm.nt at a global level, before and after desiccation. Bioinform.tics tools were developed to identify differentially spliced regions within genes. Our data suggest the im.ortance and shows the peculiar features of AS during seed desiccation. We identified AS in 347o of genes that are expressed at both tim.points before and after desiccation. m.st of these AS transcript variants had not been found before in other tissues. Am.ng the AS genes som. seed m.ster regulators could be found. Interestingly, 6% of all expressed transcripts were not transcriptionally regulated during desiccation, but only m.dified by AS. We propose that AS should be m.re routinely taken into account in the analysis of transcriptom.c data to prevent overlooking potentially im.ortant regulators.
