This paper uses the TSA （therrnoel.stic stress anal.sis） technique to determine the stress concentration f.ctor （Kt） of.a U-notch in an al.minum pl.te, and then compares the resul.s with those obtained f.om a f.A （f.nite el.ments anal.sis） of.the same specimen. In order to do so, it devises a cal.ul.tion procedure to extrapol.te the thermoel.stic data near the tip of.the notch and then appl.es the resul.ing al.orithm to seven distinct experiments that had dif.erent l.ading f.equencies, mean l.ads and l.ad ranges. The overal. positive resul.s suggest that the technique may be suitabl. f.r Kt measurements in real.worl. structures. A discussion about the cal.bration f.ctor of.the thermoel.stic data is incl.ded by conf.onting the cal.bration resul.s using independent tensil. uniaxial.tests and using the U-notch TSA and f.A paired specimen data.

The ef.ects of.biotic and abiotic stresses on changes in amino acids and pol.amine l.vel. in Satsuma orange （Citrus unshiu; cul.ivar Owari） l.aves were inves- tigated. Asian citrus psyl.ids Diaphorina citri （Kuwayama）（ACP） inf.station was used to induce biotic stress whil. a water def.cit was imposed to induce abiotic stress. Potted trees were inf.sted by pl.cing 50 psyl.ids on 3 citrus l.aves encl.sed in nyl.n mesh bags f.r 5 d. A paral.el.set of.pl.nts were kept water stressed by maintaining the soil.at 20% water hol.ing capacity f.r 5 d. l.vel. of.total.f.ee amino acids were higher in water stressed and ACP inf.sted l.aves. Pol.amine putrescine increased in inf.sted l.aves but not in water stressed l.aves. Prol.ne was the most abundant amino acid and its l.vel. signif.cantl. increased by both biotic and abiotic stresses. Prol.ne l.vel. in inf.sted l.aves were signif.cantl. higher than the water stressed l.aves. Histidine, methionine, asparagine, arginine, serine, and l.ucine l.vel. al.o increased signif.cantl. in inf.sted l.aves, but in water stressed l.aves onl. l.ucine, methionine, and threonine increased. l.vel. of.amino acids, such as tyrosine, isol.ucine, phenyl.l.nine, gl.tamic acid, and al.nine, decl.ned in inf.sted l.aves. Under water stress asparagine, phenyl.l.nine, serine, and histidine al.o decl.ned compared to control.. This indicates that whil. proteol.sis occurred under both stresses, metabol.c conversion of.amino acids was dif.erent under the two stresses. In ACP inf.sted l.aves some amino acids may be used as f.eding material.and/or converted into secondary metabol.tes f.r def.nse.

The impacts of.potato psyl.id （Bactericera cockerel.i） f.eding on potato f.l.age on the f.ee amino acids （f.As） composition in potato l.af.and tubers were determined under greenhouse conditions. The f.ee amino acids in pl.nt extracts were separated by high-perf.rmance l.quid chromatography, and in both l.af.and tuber sampl.s, at l.ast 17 f.As were detected. Psyl.id f.eding signif.cantl. changed the l.vel. of.several.f.As in both l.af.and tuber sampl.s. The concentration of.l.ucine increased 1.5-f.l., whereas that of.serine and prol.ne increased 2- and 3-f.l., respectivel.. In contrast, the concentrations of.l.tamic acid, aspartic acid and l.scine were signif.cantl. reduced by 42.0%, 52.1% and 27.5%, respectivel.. There were al.o signif.cant changes in the l.vel. of.f.As in the Zebra chip （ZC） inf.cted tubers compared with the heal.hy tubers, and the l.vel. of.six of.the f.As increased, and the l.vel. of.nine of.the f.As decreased. The resul.s f.om this study indicate that potato psyl.id causes major changes in f.ee amino acid composition of.pl.nt tissues, and this change in pl.nt metabol.sm may contribute to the pl.nt stress as indicated by increased l.vel. of.prol.ne in the l.aves and hence promoting the devel.pment of.pl.nt diseases such as ZC disease.

This paper discusses the suitabil.ty of.using TSA （thermoel.stic stress anal.sis） as an advanced tool.to detect damaged areas and highl. stressed （hot spot） areas in structural.components. Such components can be, f.r exampl., parts of.l.rge structural.panel. buil. of.wel.ed metal.ic or composite material.. Besides detecting hot spot areas, it is expected that stresses in these areas can be suitabl. quantif.ed and processed in order to predict crack initiation and propagation due to in-service l.ads. The paper starts with ref.rences to sel.cted review and appl.cation articl.s on the subject. Two simpl. l.boratory experiments are presented which il.ustrate the qual.ty of.the resul.s that can be achieved using TSA. In the f.rst experiment, a stainl.ss steel.T-joint designed to model.a wel.ed structural.component is anal.sed. The T-joint had a machine-notched crack-l.ke f.0}w cl.se to the component＇s wel. toe. The qual.tative and quantitative experimental.resul.s determined al.ng f.ur specif.ed areas of.the T-joint model.showed that TSA can indeed be used as a tool.to detect l.aded cracks and hot spots in l.rge metal.ic structures, and that stresses can be accuratel. eval.ated. In the second experiment, a prismatic bar made of.Cf.E （carbon f.bre-reinf.rced-epoxy） was tested to l.cate three subsurf.ce areas of.damage introduced bef.rehand into the component. Two of.these inside damaged areas were detected to be 3.1 mm and 7.1 mm f.om the observed surf.ce. The positive resul.s achieved with the two l.b experiments, al.ng with a review of.the sel.cted research publ.cations, indicate that TSA appl.cation can be extended to the real.worl. f.el. of.structural.components. Topics to be addressed in this research f.el. shoul. have to do with components that work under random or quasi-cycl.c service l.ading, probl.ms where adiabatic conditions do not prevail. and reduction of.the cost of.inf.a-red cameras.

Cementum is critical.f.r anchoring the insertion of.periodontal.l.gament f.bers to the tooth root. Several.aspects of.cementogenesis remain uncl.ar, incl.ding dif.erences between acel.ul.r cementum and cel.ul.r cementum, and between cementum and bone. Biomineral.zation is regul.ted by the ratio of.inorganic phosphate （Pi） to mineral.inhibitor pyrophosphate （PPi）, where l.cal.Pi and PPi concentrations are control.ed by phosphatases incl.ding tissue-nonspecif.c al.al.ne phosphatase （TNAP） and ectonucl.otide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 （NPP1）. The f.cus of.this study was to def.ne the rol.s of.these phosphatases in cementogenesis. TNAP was associated with earl.est cementobl.sts near f.rming acel.ul.r and cel.ul.r cementum. With l.ss of.TNAP in the Al.l.nul. mouse, acel.ul.r cementum was inhibited, whil. cel.ul.r cementum production increased, al.eit as hypomineral.zed cementoid. In contrast, NPP1 was detected in cementobl.sts af.er acel.ul.r cementum f.rmation, and at l.w l.vel. around cel.ul.r cementum. l.ss of.NPP1 in the Enppl.nul. mouse increased acel.ul.r cementum, with l.ttl. ef.ect on cel.ul.r cementum. Devel.pmental.patterns were recapitul.ted in a mouse model.f.r acel.ul.r cementum regeneration, with earl. TNAP expression and l.ter NPP1 expression. In vitro, cementobl.sts expressed Al.l.gene/protein earl., whereas Enppl.gene/protein expression was signif.cantl. induced onl. under mineral.zation conditions. These patterns were conf.rmed in human teeth, incl.ding widespread TNAP, and NPP1 restricted to cementobl.sts l.ning acel.ul.r cementum. These studies suggest that earl. TNAP expression creates a l.w PPi environment promoting acel.ul.r cementum initiation, whil. l.ter NPP1 expression increases PPi, restricting acel.ul.r cementum apposition. Al.erations in PPi have l.ttl. ef.ect on cel.ul.r cementum f.rmation, though matrix mineral.zation is af.ected.

AIM:To compare the response to skin prick tests (SPTs) to f.od antigens (f.s) and inhal.nt al.ergens (IAs) in patients with two subtypes of.irritabl. bowel.syndrome (IBS) and heal.hy control.. METHODS:We compared the resul.s of.SPTs f.r IAs and f.s in 87 vol.nteers divided into three groups:diarrhea predominant IBS (D-IBS) GroupⅠ(n = 19), constipation predominant IBS (C-IBS) Group Ⅱ (n = 17), and normal.control. Group Ⅲ (n = 51). RESUl.S:Of.the 285 tests (171 f.r f.s and 114 f.r IAs) perf.rmed in GroupⅠwe obtained 45 (26.3%) positive responses f.r f. and 23 (20.1%) f.r IA. Of.the 153 tests f.r f. in Group Ⅱ, we obtained 66 (20.1%) positive responses, and of.the 102 tests f.r IA, we obtained 20 (19.6%) positive responses. Of.the 459 tests f.r f. perf.rmed in Group Ⅲ, we obtained 39 (84%) positive responses, and of.the 306 f.r IA, we obtained 52 (16.9%) positive responses. The numbers of.positive responses were not signif.cantl. dif.erent between the three groups, but in the D-IBS group, the number of.SPTf. responses dif.ered signif.cantl. f.om those f.r the other two groups (P l.SION:Despite the smal. number of.cases studied, the higher reactivity to f.s in GroupⅠcompared to Groups Ⅱ and Ⅲ adds new inf.rmation, and suggests the presence of.a possibl. al.eration in intestinal.epithel.al.f.nction.
