Nano-scale coating wear measurement by introducing Raman-sensing underlayer

For gaining fundamental insight into coating wear mechanisms and increasing operational efficiency and automation degree of equipment in important application fields of coating techniques,it is of great importance to developing novel wear measurement techniques enabling nanoscale studies of coating wear in the running process,but this remains a significant ***,a facile strategy is reported to achieve accurate coating thickness quantification at nanoscale level,which is based on a bilayer structure:a top target layer of a-C:H(hydrogenated amorphous carbon)film is considered as a light attenuating and anti-wear layer while underlayer of silicon serves as Raman-sensing *** constructing the relationship between the thickness of a-C:H and Raman intensity of attenuated silicon signal,the coating thickness quantification method is established and successfully applied to quantify coating wear in the friction *** approach can effectively avoid remarkable errors caused by tribo-induced effects in the interface regions,demonstrating its advantage in error *** about these tribo-induced effects are also elucidated by a combination of Raman spectroscopy,optical profilometer,eeLS,and *** particular,the proposed approach enables the possibility of measuring coating wear with oil film on top,which breaks an important limitation of existed wear measurement methods,i.e.,incapable of applying in oil-lubricated *** approach can be used to quantify the wear condition of diverse target coatings and has the potential of online wear monitoring when combining a compact laser excitation and detection system.

Drones are increasingly used for fauna monitoring and wildlife tracking;however,their application for wildlife tracking is restricted by developing such *** we explore the potential of drones for wildlife tracking using an off-the-shelf system that is easy to use by non-specialists consisting of a multirotor drone,smartphones,and commercial tracking devices via Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band(UWB).We present the system configuration,explore the operational parameters that can affect detection capabilities,and test the effectiveness of the system for locating targets by simulating target animals in savanna and forest *** self-contained tracking system was built without hardware or software *** 40 tracking flights carried out in the Brazilian Cerrado,we obtained a detection rate of 90%in savanna and 40%in forest *** for targets in movement(N=20),the detection rates were 90%in the savanna and 30%in the forest *** spatial accuracy obtained by the system was 14.61 m,being significantly more accurate in savanna(x=10.53)than in forest areas(x=13.06).This approach to wildlife tracking facilitates the use of drones by non-specialists at an affordable cost for conservation projects with limited *** reduced size of the tags,the long battery life,and the iower cost compared to GPS-tags open up a range of opportunities for animal tracking.

Genomic prediction is an effective way to accelerate the rate of agronomic trait improvement in *** methods typically use linear regression models with clear assumptions;such methods are unable to capture the complex relationships between genotypes and ***-linear models(e.g.,deep neural networks)have been proposed as a superior alternative to linear models because they can capture complex non-additive *** we introduce a deep learning(DL)method,deep neural network genomic prediction(DNNGP),for integration of multi-omics data in *** trained DNNGP on four datasets and compared its performance with methods built with five classic models:genomic best linear unbiased prediction(GBLUP);two methods based on a machine learning(ML)framework,light gradient boosting machine(LightGBM)and support vector regression(SVR);and two methods based on a DL framework,deep learning genomic selection(DeepGS)and deep learning genome-wide association study(DLGWAS).DNNGP is novel in five ***,it can be applied to a variety of omics data to predict ***,the multilayered hierarchical structure of DNNGP dynamically learns features from raw data,avoiding overfitting and improving the convergence rate using a batch normalization layer and early stopping and rectified linear activation(rectified linear unit)***,when small datasets were used,DNNGP produced results that are competitive with results from the other five methods,showing greater prediction accuracy than the other methods when large-scale breeding data were ***,the computation time required by DNNGP was comparable with that of commonly used methods,up to 10 times faster than ***,hyperparameters can easily be batch tuned on a local *** with GBLUP,LightGBM,SVR,DeepGS and DLGWAS,DNNGP is superior to these existing widely used genomic selection(GS)***,DNNGP can generate robust assessments from diverse datasets,including omics data

In slopes of Mediterranean mid-mountain areas,land use and land cover changes linked to the aban-donment of cropland activity affect soil quality and degradation and soil redistribution;however,limited attention has been paid to this issue at catchment *** paper evaluates the effects of cropland abandonment and post-land abandonment management(through natural revegetation and afforesta-tion)on soil redistribution rates using fallout ^(137)Cs measurements in the Araguás catchment(0.45 km^(2),Central Spanish Pyrenees).A total of 52 soil core samples,distributed in a regular grid,from the first 30-40 cm and 9 sectioned reference samples were collected across the catchment and soil properties were *** ^(137)Cs was measured in a 5 cm sectioned references samples and in bulk grid samples.^(137)Cs inventories were used to estimate soil erosion and deposition rates across the *** show that the highest erosion rates were recorded under sparsely vegetated sites in the badland area,while the lowest rates were found in the afforested area,but no significant differences were observed between the different uses and covers in soil redistribution rates likely due to a long history of human intervention through cultivation in steep slopes and afforestation ***,the recovery of the soil organic matter in afforested areas suggest that afforestation can reduce soil degradation at long-term *** information gained achieve a better understanding of soil redistribution dynamics and provide knowledge for effective land management after cropland abandonment of agroecosystems in Mediter-ranean mountain areas.

A multichannel heterodyne fiber optic vibrometer is demonstrated which can be operated at ranges in excess of 50m. The system is designed to measure periodic signals, impacts, rotation, 3D strain, and vibration mapping. The displacement resolution of each channel exceeds 1 nm. The outputs from all channels are simultaneous, and the number of channels can be increased by using optical switches.

We demonstrate an all optical approach that can surprisingly offer the possibility of yielding much more information than one would expect,pertinent to the carrier recombination dynamics via both radiative and nonradiative processes when only one dominant deep defect level is present in a semiconductor *** applying a band-defect state coupling model that explicitly treats the inter-band radiative recombination and Shockley-Read-Hall(SRH)recombination via the deep defect states on an equal footing for any defect center occupation fraction,and analyzing photoluminescence(PL)as a function of excitation density over a wide range of the excitation density(e.g.,5-6 orders in magnitude),in conjunction with Raman measurements of the LO-phonon plasmon(LOPP)coupled mode,nearly all of the key parameters relevant to the recombination processes can be *** include internal quantum efficiency(IQe),minority and majority carrier density,inter-band radiative recombination rate(Wr),minority carrier nonradiative recombination rate(Wnr),defect center occupation fraction(f)),defect center density(Nt),and minority and majority carrier capture cross-sections(σt andσtM).While some of this information is thought to be obtainable optically,such as IQe and the Wr/Wnr ratio,most of the other parameters are generally considered to be attainable only through electrical techniques,such as current-voltage(Ⅰ-Ⅴ)characteristics and deep level transient spectroscopy(DLTS).Following a procedure developed herein,this approach has been successfully applied to three GaAs double-heterostructures that exhibit two distinctly different nonradiative recombination *** method greatly enhances the usefulness of the simple PL technique to an unprecedented level,facilitating comprehensive material and device characterization without the need for any device processing.

The Late Pleistocene littoral ridges of southern South America,especially those of the north of Argentinean Patagonia,contain remains of mollusk shells with bioerosion *** sites from marine isotope stages(2 from MIS 7,4 from MIS 5 e)and five sites from modern beaches from northern Río Negro Province,with 40 taxa(17 bivalves and 23 gastropods)were analyzed,in the area between west of Baliza San Matías and Las Grutas(41°S).Three ichnogenera were identified in deposits of MIS 7:entobia,Gastrochaenolites(Domichnia)and Oichnus(Praedichnia)with one ichnospecies(***).Six ichnogenera were identified in deposits of MIS 5 e:entobia,Meandropolydora,Pinaceocladichnus,Iramena,Caulostrepsis and Oichnus with one ichnospecies(***).Seven ichnogenera were identified from modern beaches:entobia,Meandropolydora,Iramena,Caulostrepsis,Pinaceocladichnus,Gastrochaenolites(Domichnia)and Oichnus(Praedicnia),with two ichnospecies(*** and ***).On this basis,it is inferred that Pleistocene benthic communities were constituted from cheilostome bryzoans and polychaete annelids,together with drilling bivalves,predatory gastropods and overall warm-water species of *** these,Chama iudicai was found on Plicatula gibbosa from MIS 7 and MIS 5 *** record of warm temperature species suggests a higher sea surface temperature(SST)than the present one and/or the influence of the warm southward Brazilian Current affecting the waters of Golfo San Matí*** the modern beaches surveyed,there is an increase in polychaete annelids,cheilostome bryzoans,temperate-cold species and drilling bivalves,as well as sandy substrate species,which together with an increase of Gastrochaenolites and Caulostrepsis,suggest a colder climate due to the greater influence of the Malvinas Current during the Holocene.
