Autoregressive spatial analysis and individual tree modeling as strategies for the management of Eremanthus erythropappus

The objectives of this study were to apply statistical techniques to discriminate fertilization treatments of Eremanthus erythropappus（DC.） Mac *** autoregressive modeling, and to develop individual tree models for diameter and crown area（CA） projection to define management strategies for candeia plantations subjected to different fertilization treatments. This is an important tree species originating from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain forest and Savannah biomes, intensively used in the cosmetic industry. Nonetheless, to date, research has not addressed the management of natural stands or plantations of the species. Our experiment was located in Baependi, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and comprised of four randomized blocks and 13 treatments. The treatments consisted of 12 different regimes of fertilization plus a control. Each sample plot was composed of 50 plants plus two border plants in a planting spacing of 2.5 9 2.0 m and undergoing pruning at 5 and 6 years of age. Starting in the second year, total tree height（H） and circumference（at 1.30 m from the ground or breast height, CBH） were measured every 6 months. Starting in the fifth year CA was measured. Tree growth varied by fertilization *** were detected by using an autoregressive approach, considering that standard statistical methods were not powerful enough to detect significant *** growth groups were formed, and maximum growth was obtained for treatment 10（NPK, 8-28-16）. Management guidelines are provided based on individual tree models for different fertilization levels.

This work is a review of previous works,presenting and discussing the most important results obtained by an ongoing research program towards the development of innovative,low-cost,self-lubricating composites with a low friction coefficient and high mechanical strength and wear *** emphasis is given to uniaxial die pressing of solid lubricant particles mixed with matrix powders and to metal injection moulding associated with in situ generation of solid lubricant ***,a microstructural model/processing route (powder injection moulding followed by plasma-assisted debinding and sintering) produced a homogeneous dispersion of in situ generated solid lubricant *** nodules of graphite with diameter smaller than 20 μm were formed,constituting a nanostructured stacking of graphite foils with nanometric *** Raman analysis indicated that the graphite nodules were composed of turbostratic 2D graphite having highly misaligned graphene planes separated by large interlamellae *** interplanar distance between the graphene foils and misalignment of these foils were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and were,probably,the origin of the outstandingly low dry friction coefficient (0.04).The effect of sintering temperature,precursor content,metallic matrix composition and surface finish is also ***,the influence of a double-pressing/double-sintering (DPDS) technique on the tribological performance of self-lubricating uniaxially die-pressed hBN + graphite-Fe-Si-C-Mo composite is also ***,the tribological behaviour of die-pressed Fe-Si-C matrix composites containing 5,7.5 and 10 wt％ solid lubricants (hBN and graphite) added during the mixing step is analysed in terms of mechanical properties and wear ***,the synergy between solid lubricant particles dispersed in a metallic matrix and fluid lubricants in a cooperative mixed lubrication regime is presented.

In previous papers,the authors presented various electromagnetic transient(EMT)results for multi-infeed configurations focusing on possible effects from failures in one link being transferred to others in terms of induced commutation failures(CF),either during the fault events or after fault clearing in the recovery ***,the AC system networks in these cases were represented by simplified *** interesting conclusions arose from these publications without enabling a much-detailed analysis of overall system effects,which is only possible when the network is modeled in full *** paper aims at complementing and comparing simulation results on HVDC multi-infeed configurations using both dynamic stability and electromagnetic transient,while establishing some basic proposals for optimal use of both *** identifies the limitations from each type of study so that a comprehensive and useful analysis of HVDC multi-infeed systems can be obtained.

Aims Climate and soil are among the most important factors determin-ing variation in tree communities,but their effects have not been thoroughly elucidated to date for many vegetation *** this study,we evaluate how climate and soil gradients affect gradients of vegetation composition,species diversity and dominance,structure and functional traits(seed mass and wood density)using over 327000 trees in 158 sites distributed along environmental gradients in the transitions among the Atlantic forest,Cerrado and Caatinga in Minas Gerais State(MG),Brazil(nearly 600000 km2).Methods Gradients in species,genus and family abundance in addition to basal area,stem density,species diversity(Fisher’s alpha),domin-ance percentage,seed mass and wood density were correlated using multiple regressions with environmental variables,as summarized in four principal component analysis axes(two climatic-precipi-tation seasonality and temperature range-and two edaphic-soil fertility and soil moisture).Additionally,ordinary kriging maps were used to better illustrate the *** Findings Multiple regression models indicate that all variables but domin-ance percentage were affected by one or more of the environmental gradients,but the average R2 was low(26.25%).Kriging maps rein-forced the patterns observed in the regression *** seasonality and soil moisture gradients were the most important gra-dients affecting vegetation *** finding suggests that water availability is an important determinant of vegetation features in these vegetation transitions.

Liver preservation prior to transplantation: Past, present, and future

Since Dr. Thomas Starzl performed the first series of successful liver transplants(LTs), important advances have been made in immunosuppression, operative techniques, and postoperative care. In 1988, Belzer's group reported the first successful LT using the University of Wisconsin preservation solution(UW).Since then, UW has replaced EuroCollins solution and allowed prolonged and safer preservation of liver, kidney, and pancreas allografts, thus contributing to the improvement of transplant outcomes. Although UW is still considered the standard of care in the United States and in several countries worldwide, a recent meta-analysis revealed similar LT outcomes among UW, Celsior solution, and the Institut Georges Lopez-1 preservation solution, which were slightly superior to those obtained with histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate preservation *** preservation has been recently developed, and liver allografts are preserved mainly through the following methods: hypothermic machine perfusion, normothermic machine perfusion, and subnormothermic machine perfusion. Their use has the potential advantage of improving clinical results in LT involving extended criteria donor allografts. Although associated with increased costs, techniques employing machine perfusion of liver allografts have been considered clinically feasible. This editorial focuses on recent advances and future perspectives in liver allograft preservation.

Hypolactasia is associated with insulin resistance in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

AIM To assess lactase gene(LCT)-13910C>T polymorphisms in Brazilian non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) patients in comparison with healthy *** This was a transverse observational clinical study with NAFLD patients who were followed at the Hepatology Outpatient Unit of the Hospital das Clínicas, S?o Paulo, Brazil. The polymorphism of lactase non-persistence/lactase persistence(LCT-13910C>T) was examined by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique in 102 liver biopsy-proven NAFLD patients(steatosis in 9 and NASH in 93) and compared to those of 501 unrelated healthy volunteers. Anthropometric, clinical, biochemical and liver histology data were analyzed. Continuous variables were compared using the t or Mann-Whitney tests, and categorical data were compared with the Fisher's exact test. Univariate logistic regression and multivariate logistic regression adjusted for gender and age were *** No differences in the LCT-13910 genotype frequencies were noted between the NAFLD patients(66.67% of the patients with steatosis were CC, 33.33% were CT, and none were TT; 55.91% of the patients with NASH were CC, 39.78% were CT, and 4.3% were TT; P = 0.941) and the healthy controls(59.12% were CC, 35.67% were CT, and 5.21% were TT) or between the steatosis and NASH patients. That is, the distribution of the lactase non-persistence/lactase persistence polymorphism(LCT-13910C>T) in the patients with NAFLD was equal to that in the general population. In the NASH patients, the univariate analysis revealed that the lactase nonpersistence(low lactase activity or hypolactasia) phenotype was associated with higher insulin levels(23.47 ± 15.94 μU/m L vs 15.8 ± 8.33 μU/m L, P = 0.027) and a higher frequency of insulin resistance(91.84% vs 72.22%, P = 0.02) compared with the lactase persistence phenotype. An 800 kV electric power substation can have more than one hundred of porcelain multicone type insulators supporting busbar *** or more sections in series,having middle and end fittings,compose these *** process can cause degradation of the cement used in this type of insulator and this fact can affect its dielectric performance under heavy *** paper presents results of an investigation based on power frequency high voltage tests performed on 800 kV porcelain multicone type insulators,removed from service after having operated for more than 20 years,as well a non-used one that had been stored on site for long *** insulators were tested in different arrangements:each section at a time and the two sections assembled in series,as actually used insulator *** tests were carried out under artificial rain ranging from 1 mm/min to 5 mm/*** results have confirmed a reduction of up to 30% in the insulator power frequency flashover voltage under 5 mm/min rain conditions and gave important information to the utility about radial cracks that were observed in many insulators and about the discharge mechanisms along the insulators under rain.
