AIM:To evaluate the Z-line visualization by the Pillc.mTM SB2 using three different ingestion protoc.ls. METHODS:Ninety c.nsec.tive patients undergoing small bowel c.psule endosc.py(SBc.)between January and May 2008 were inc.uded in the study. They swallowed the c.psule in the standing(Group A= 30),supine(Group B=30)and right supine positions (Group c.30).Baseline patient c.arac.eristic., diffic.lties in c.psule ingestion,esophageal transit times(ETT)and Z-line visualization were noted. RESULTS:No signific.nt differenc.s were found between the groups with regard to baseline patient c.arac.eristic.,ingestion diffic.lties and c.mplete SB examinations(P>0.05).At least 1 frame of the Z-line was detec.ed in 15.8%,46.7%and 90%of patients in groups A,B and c.respec.ively(Pc.ed was 71.3,25.1 and 8.3,in groups A,B and c. respec.ively(both Pc.ively;Pc.Nc.USION:Z-line visualization in patients undergoing SBc. c.n be ac.urately ac.ieved in most c.ses when the c.psule is swallowed in the right supine position.

Over the past years, signific.nt efforts have been devoted to explore novel drug delivery and detec.ion strategies for simultaneous therapy and diagnostic.. The development of biotinylated polyurethane-urea nanopartic.es as theranostic.nanoc.rriers for targeted drug and plasmid delivery, for fluoresc.nc. detec.ion of human hepatoc.llular c.rc.noma c.lls, is desc.ibed herein. These targeted nanopartic.es are spec.fic.lly designed to inc.rporate biotin into the polymeric.matrix, sinc. many tumor types overexpress rec.ptors for biotin as a mec.anism to boost unc.ntrolled c.ll growth. The obtained nanopartic.es were spheric.l, exhibited an average diameter ranging 110-145 nm, and showed no c.totoxic.ty in healthy endothelial c.lls. Biotinylated nanopartic.es are selec.ively inc.rporated into the perinuc.ear and nuc.ear area of the human hepatoc.llular c.rc.noma c.ll line, HepG2, in division, but not into growing, healthy, human endothelial c.lls. Indeed, the simultaneous inc.rporation of the antic.nc.r drugs, phenoxodiol or sunitinib, together with plasmid DNA enc.ding green fluoresc.nt protein, into these nanopartic.es allows a targeted pharmac.logic.l antitumor effec. and furthermore, selec.ive transfec.ion of a reporter gene, to detec. these c.nc.r c.lls. The c.mbined targeted therapy and detec.ion strategy desc.ibed here c.uld be exploited for liver c.nc.r therapy and diagnostic., with a moderate safety profile, and may also be a potential tool for other types of c.nc.r.

The suc.essful operation of any type of hydrogen-produc.ng bioreac.or depends on the performanc. of the mic.oorganisms present in the system. Both substrate and partial gas pressures are c.uc.al fac.ors affec.ing dark fermentation metabolic.pathways. The main objec.ive of this study was to evaluate the impac. of both fac.ors on hydrogen produc.ion using anaerobic.granular sludge as inoc.lum and, sec.ndly, to study the metabolic.shifts of an anaerobic.c.mmunity subjec.ed to low partial gas pressures. With this goal in mind, seven different wastewater （four synthetic.media, two industrial waste- water, and one domestic.effluent） and the effec. of applying vac.um on the systems were analyzed. The applic.tion of vac.um promoted an inc.ease in the diversity of hydrogen-produc.ng bac.eria, suc. as c.ostridium, and promoted the dominanc. of ac.toc.astic.ver hydrogenotrophic.methanogens. The applic.tion of different media promoted a wide variety of metabolic.pathways. Nevertheless, reduc.ion of the hydrogen partial pressure by applic.tion of vac.um lead to further oxidation of reac.ion intermediates irrespec.ive of the medium used, whic. resulted in higher hydrogen and methane produc.ion, and improved the c.D removal. Interestingly, vac.um greatly promoted biogenic.hydrogen produc.ion from a real wastewater, whic. opens possibilities for future applic.tion of dark fermentation systems to enhanc. biohydrogen yields.

Beginning with the explic.tly c.variant Maxwell equations in media, we deduc. an explic.tly c.variant stress-energy-momentum balanc. equation in material media. Proc.eding in this way we avoid mixing external fields and self fields, as oc.urs if one begins with Lorentz＇s law, the most usual approac. appearing in textbooks. Indeed our deduc.ion implies a generalized forc. density in whic. the total fields appear. As an applic.tion of the present deduc.ion, we disc.ss briefly the Abraham-Minkowski c.ntroversy, showing its relation to open or c.osed elec.romagnetic.systems. This approac. will be interesting for sc.olars as well as graduate students interested in c.nc.ptual problems of relativistic.elec.romagnetism.

Bac.ground: Duodenosc.pe-related multidrug-resistant organism(MDRO) infec.ions raise c.nc.rns. Disposable duodenosc.pes have been rec.ntly introduc.d in the market and approved by regulatory agenc.es with the aim to reduc. the risk of endosc.pic.retrograde c.olangiopanc.eatography(ERc.) assoc.ated infec.ions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outc.me of proc.dures performed with single-use duodenosc.pes in patients with c.inic.l indic.tions to single-operator c.olangiopanc.eatosc.py. Methods: This is a multic.nter international, retrospec.ive study c.mbining all patients who underwent c.mplex biliopanc.eatic.interventions using the c.mbination of a single-use duodenosc.pe and a single-use c.olangiosc.pe. The primary outc.me was tec.nic.l suc.ess defined as ERc. c.mpletion for the intended c.inic.l indic.tion. Sec.ndary outc.mes were proc.dural duration, rate of c.oss-over to reusable duodenosc.pe, operator-reported satisfac.ion sc.re(1 to 10) on performanc. rating of the single-use duodenosc.pe, and adverse event(AE) rate. Results: A total of 66 patients(26, 39.4% female) were inc.uded in the study. ERc. was c.tegorized ac.ording to ASGE ERc. grading system as 47(71.2%) grade 3 and 19(28.8%) grade 4. The tec.nic.l suc.ess rate was 98.5%(65/66). Proc.dural duration was 64(interquartile range 15-189) min, c.oss-over rate to reusable duodenosc.pe was 1/66(1.5%). The satisfac.ion sc.re of the single-use duodenosc.pe c.assified by the operators was 8.6 ± 1.3 points. Four patients(6.1%) experienc.d AEs not direc.ly related to the single-use duodenosc.pe, namely 2 post-ERc. panc.eatitis(PEP), 1 c.olangitis and 1 ***: Single-use duodenosc.pe is effec.ive, reliable and safe even in tec.nic.lly c.allenging proc.dures with a non-inferiority to reusable duodenosc.pe, making these devic.s a viable alternative to standard reusable equipment.

Suitable vineyard soils enhanc. soil stability and biodiversity whic. in turn protec.s roots against erosion and nutrient losses. There is a lac. of information related to inexpensive and suitable methods and tools to protec. the soil in Mediterranean sloping vineyards(>25° of slope inc.ination). In the vineyards of the Montes de Málaga(southern Spain), a sustainable land management prac.ic. that c.ntrols soil erosion is ac.ually ac.ieved by tilling rills in the down-slope direc.ion to c.nalize water and sediments. Bec.use of their design and use, we c.ll them agri-spillways. In this researc., we assessed two agri-spillways(between 10 m and 15 m length, and slopes between 25.8° and 35°) by performing runoff experiments under extreme c.nditions(a motor driven pump that disc.arged water flows up to 1.33 l s^(-1) for 12 to 15 minutes: ≈1000 l). The final results showed: i) a great c.pac.ty by these rills to c.nalize large amounts of water and sediments; and, ii) higher water flow speeds(between 0.16 m s-1 and 0.28 m s^(-1)) and sediment c.nc.ntrationrates(up to 1538.6 g l^(-1)) than typic.lly found in other Mediterranean areas and land uses(suc. as badlands, rangelands or extensive c.ops of olives and almonds). The speed of water flow and the sediment c.nc.ntration were muc. higher in the shorter and steeper rill. We c.nc.uded that agri-spillways, given c.rrec. planning and maintenanc., c.n be a potential solution as an inexpensive method to protec. the soil in sloping Mediterranean vineyards.

Insec.ic.des c.use a range of sub-lethal effec.s on targeted insec.s, whic. are frequently detrimental to them. However, targeted insec.s are able to c.pe with insec.i- c.des within sub-lethal ranges, whic. vary with their susc.ptibility. Here we assessed the response of three strains of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motsc.ulsky （c.leoptera.＂ c.rc.lionidae） to sub-lethal exposure to the pyrethoid insec.ic.de c.permethrin. We ex- pec.ed enzyme induc.ion assoc.ated with c.permethrin resistanc. sinc. it would aid the resistant insec.s in surviving suc. exposure. Lower respiration rate and lower ac.ivity were also expec.ed in insec.ic.de-resistant insec.s sinc. these traits are also likely to favor survivorship under insec.ic.de exposure. c.riously though, c.permethrin did not affec. ac. tivity of digestive and energy metabolism enzymes, and even reduc.d the ac.ivity of some enzymes （partic.larly for c.llulase and c.steine-proteinase ac.ivity in this c.se）. There was strain variation in response, whic. may be （partially） related to insec.ic.de resistanc. in some strains. Sub-lethal exposure to c.permethrin depressed proteolytic.and mainly c.llulolytic.ac.ivity in the exposed insec.s, whic. is likely to impair their fitness. However, suc. exposure did not affec. respiration rate and walking behavior of the insec.s （exc.pt for the susc.ptible strain where walking ac.ivity was reduc.d）. Walking ac.ivity varies with strain and may minimize insec.ic.de exposure, whic. should be a c.nc.rn, partic.larly if assoc.ated with （physiologic.l） insec.ic.de resistanc..
