Comparison of WRF Model Physics Parameterizations over the MENA-CORDEX Domain

We investigated the performance of 12 different physics configurations of the climate version of the Weather, Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model over the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) domain. Possible combinations among two Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), three Cumulus (CUM) and two Microphysics (MIC) schemes were tested. The 2-year simulations (December 1988-November 1990) have been compared with gridded observational data and station measurements for several variables, including total precipitation and maximum and minimum 2-meter air temperature. An objective ranking method of the 12 different simulations and the selection procedure of the best performing configuration for the MENA domain are based on several statistical metrics and carried out for relevant sub-domains and individual stations. The setup for cloud microphysics is found to have the strongest impact on temperature biases while precipitation is most sensitive to the cumulus parameterization scheme and mainly in the tropics.

Reductions in the anthropogenic emissions in conjunction with warming climate impose competing impacts on ozone over the Europe. Here, we use long-term observations over the EMEP network and simulations using a global chemistry-climate model(ECHAM5/MESSy) to investigate the changes in annual and seasonal ozone over Europe during the 1995–2014 period. We find that there are contrasts in observed as well as modeled ozone trends between the 5th and 95 th percentile concentrations, both with enhanced trends during daytime than nighttime. While the 95 th percentile ozone shows a decreasing trend(0.9 ug/m/yr during the noon hours), in response to the reductions in European anthropogenic emissions, the 5th percentile ozone, in contrast, has continued to increase especially in daytime hours(0.3 ug/m/yr). ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry(EMAC) model successfully captures the observed temporal variability and the contrast in trends of 95 th percentile and 5th percentile ozone. The observed trend contrast indicates different driving factors affecting the surface ozone changes for polluted and background conditions.

Six World Meteorological Organization(WMO)/Global Atmosphere Watch(GAW) stations are located at background sites in China, which constitute a network for monitoring surface ozone, including its long-term temporal variation. In this study, we evaluated the seasonal variation in surface ozone simulated by the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry(EMAC) general circulation model with the measurements made at these WMO/GAW background stations for the period of 2010–2012, and investigated the regional representativeness of each station with respect to the seasonal variation in surface ozone. We determined the contributions of ozone originating from various tropospheric and stratospheric latitude bands based on EMAC simulations using a tagged tracer approach. The results showed that the predominant contribution to surface ozone was from the troposphere in northern middle-high and tropical latitudes. For each station there was a large surrounding area in which the yearly ozone maximum occurred in the same month as it did at the station, reflecting the regional characteristics of the seasonal variation in surface ozone recorded at the WMO/GAW background stations. Surface ozone in China was found to generally peak in summer over non-monsoon and mid-latitude monsoon regions and in spring over low-latitude monsoon regions, indicating that the regional representativeness of ozone variability in China is significantly influenced by the Asian summer monsoon.

Strong pollution emissions from large urban and industrial centres in eastern China are thought to greatly impact regional air quality and global atmospheric chemistry. In this study, we investigate extensive pollution plumes over North China, observed by aircraft during the IPAC-NC (Influence of Pollution on Aerosols and Cloud Microphysics in North China) field campaign in spring 2006. Several pollution plumes were encountered, characterized by sharp and strong increases of SO2 and NO x (NO plus NO2) as well as remarkable O3 variability. During a flight performed downwind of the megacity Tianjin on 9 April, O3 was found to be depleted at NO x >15 ppbv and enhanced at NO x mixing ratios of 6–7 ppbv. Our analysis indicates that the plumes had recently been released by industrial plants, and partly mixed with urban emissions, giving rise to the large-scale transport of air pollution and substantial degradation of air quality.
