The etch characteristics of Si_1-xGex films in HNO3:H2O:HF were examined. The etch rate ratio (etch selectivity) between Si_1-xGex and Si escalated with the growth of HNO3 concentration at low concentration level, and when the HNO3 concentration exceeded a critical level the etch selectivity descended with higher HNO3 concentration. The dependence of etch selectivity on the HNO3 concentration was due to the higher critical HNO3 concentration for etching Si than that for etching Si1-xGex. Since the Ge-Ge bond energy was weaker than that of Si-Si and Si-Ge, the Ge atoms were oxidized preferentially once the HNO3 composition exceeded the critical concentration of etching Si1-xGex,which was manifested by the XPS spectra of Si1-xGex etched in HNO3:H2O:HF. When the HNO3 volume rose to another critical value, the significant growth of the Si etch rate low-ered the etch selectivity. Although both the etch rates of Si1-xGex and Si dropped with lower HF concentration, the etch rate ra-tio of Si1-xGex to Si boosted remarkably due to the water-soluble characteristics of GeO2.

Malnutrition is a major issue in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), adversely affecting morbidity, mortality, functional activity and patients’ quality of life. Our knowledge of the pathogenic mechanisms of malnutrition in patients with CKD, including endstage renal disease, has been improved. This has led to the development of clinical practice guidelines for nutritional care in CKD which provide a framework for the nutritional issues facing patients and physiccians. Extensive research in the field of nutrition in patients with CKD has resulted in the formation of general guidelines, although some uncertainties still exist on some of the best therapeutic or preventive options in uremic malnutrition. It is important to search actively for malnutrition since early diagnosis and treatment can improve the prognosis for CKD patients and reduce the monetary costs connected with treatment.

Human Nail Clippings as a Source of DNA for Genetic Studies

blood samples have traditionally been used as the main source of DNA for genetic analysis. How-ever, this source can be difficult in terms of collection, transportation, and long-term storage. In this study, we investigated whether human nail clippings could be used as a source of DNA for SNP genotyping, null-allele detection, and whole-genome amplification. From extracted nail DNA, we achieved amplicons up to a length of ~400 bp and >96% concordance for SNP genotyping and 100% concordance for null-allele detection compared to DNA derived from matched blood sam-ples. For whole-genome amplification, OmniPlex performed better than Multiple Displacement Amplification with a success rate of 89.3% and 76.8% for SNP genotyping and null-allele detection, respectively. Concordance was ~98% for both methods. When combined with OmniPlex whole-genome amplification, human nail clippings could potentially be used as an alternative to whole blood as a less invasive and more convenient source of DNA for genotyping studies.

Calbindin D-28K （Cb）, a Ca2＋-binding protein, maintains Ca2＋ homeostasis and protects neurons against various insults. Hyperthermia can exacerbate brain damage produced by ischemic insults. However, little is reported about the role of Cb in the brain under hyperthermic condition during ischemic insults. We inves- tigated the effects of transient global cerebral ischemia on Cb immunoreactivity as well as neuronal damage in the hippocampal formation under hyperthermic condition using immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclei （NeuN） and Cb, and Fluoro-Jade b histofluorescence staining in gerbils. Hyperthermia （39.5 ＋ 0.2~C） was induced for 30 minutes before and during transient ischemia. Hyperthermic ischemia resulted in neu- ronal damage/death in the pyramidal layer of CA1-3 area and in the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In addition, hyperthermic ischemia significantly decreaced Cb immunoreac- tivity in damaged or dying neurons at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In brief, hyperthermic condition produced more extensive and severer neuronal damage/death, and reduced Cb immunoreactivity in the hippocampus following transient global cerebral ischemia. Present findings indicate that the degree of reduced Cb immu- noreactivity might be related with various neuronal damage/death overtime and corresponding areas after ischemic insults.

Vast magnetospheric regions are mapped along the field lines to the narrow latitudinal band of the polar/auroral regions. Therefore monitoring of solar wind energy dissipation into the ionosphere at auroral latitudes gives unique opportunities to study geomagnetic disturbances in their complexity from a relatively well-localized vantage point. Here we introduce and present the current state of a recently proposed science project for coordinated monitoring of high-latitude activity with the EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter) radar array supported by ground-based magnetometer and optical data and ENA (Energetic Neutral Atom) observation from the CINEMA (Cube-Sat for Ions, Neutrals, Electrons and Magnetic field) satellite system.

Sea surface temperature(SST) varies significantly in the presence of tropical cyclones(TCs). Using fixed SST throughout the integration of high resolution TC models is general practice in research and operational endeavor over the North Indian Ocean. The present study is to assess the impact of updating realistic SST in TC lifetime on track, intensity and rainfall of TCs. The Hurricane Weather Research Forecast(HWRF) model of single domain with 9 km resolution is used. A total of 31 forecast cases are considered from 6 TCs during 2007-16 with unique track and intensity characteristics. A set of two numerical experiments are done without(CNTl) and with 6-hourly SST update(SST) in TC *** track and intensity errors show that there is an improvement of 3–41% in track during 12–120 h forecast length for SST run. The SST runs improve landfall position and time prediction by 20% and 33% respectively. The cross track error of SST run is comparable(44 km) with average errors available for this basin(34 km);and along track errors are improved by 60% as compared to CNTl as well as average errors of the basin. The model is biased to overestimate a weaker TC and underestimate a stronger TC, however, the bias is reduced in SST run by 5–51%. The analyses of wind, enthalpy flux and warm core structures provide insight for realistic intensity prediction of SST run unlike CNTl. Rainfall intensity and radial distribution is also improved in SST run. Thus, this study highlights the significance of ocean coupling with TC models to advance forecast guidance.
