The etiologic diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases requires non-routine complementary examinations to be performed. Thus, in specific cases, after neuroimaging(computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging cerebral scan sequences) and neurosonology(Doppler test of the supra-aortic trunks, transcranial echography and echocardiography), which academically allow us to classify the patients according to their etiologic stroke subtype, further examinations must be used to make a correct etiologic diagnostic. The present review aims to update knowledge about the usefulness of the different tests of blood and urine, plain chest radiography, X-ray of the spine, skull and abdomen, lumbar puncture, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, polysomnography, and pathologic examination after biopsy of the artery, skin, muscles, nerves, meninges, and brain, in the management of patients who have suffered an acute stroke.

This article provides a comparative overview of environmental impact assessment (eia) in Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Angola, and the European Union (EU). eia “systemic measure” and “foundation measure” criteria are used to evaluate and compare the performance of each system. In contrast to the EU, eia must be carried out by registered experts in the African countries. In Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa public consultation is mandatory during scoping. In Kenya and Tanzania the eia study should contain measures to prevent health hazards, to ensure employee safety, and for emergency management. eia system monitoring is required in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and in the EU, but not in South Africa and Angola. Financial issues, insufficient qualified personnel, and an increasing number of eia applications undermine the capacity of competent authorities to adequately monitor these eia systems. Consequently, training programmes increase effectiveness of eia implementation is a common request. The African countries reviewed here have adopted eia and integrated eia systems into public policy despite the constraints they face. As they continue to gain experience in eia and to revise their eia systems, they are moving towards a more flexible system with greater public involvement and robust arrangements and practices.

Aims Alien species are commonly considered as harmful weeds capa-ble of decreasing native biodiversity and threatening *** this assumption,little is known about the long-term patterns of the native-alien relationships associated with human disturbed managed *** study aims to elucidate the commu-nity dynamics associated with a successional gradient in chilean Mediterranean grasslands,considering both native and alien *** Species richness(natives and aliens separately)and life-form(annu-als and perennials)were recorded in four chilean post-agricultural grazed grasslands each covering a broad successional gradient(from 1 to 40 years since crop abandonment).A detrended correspondence analysis(DcA),mixed model effects analyses and cor-relation tests were conducted to assess how this temporal gradient influenced natives and aliens through community *** Findings Our results show different life-form patterns between natives and aliens over *** were mainly represented by annuals(especially ruderals and weeds),which were established at the beginning of *** aliens also predominated at mid-successional stages,but in old grasslands native species were slightly more representative than alien ones within the *** the late successional states,positive or no correlations at all between alien and native species richness suggested the absence of competition between both species groups,as a result of differ-ent strategies in occupation of the *** dynamics over time constitute a net gain in biodiversity,increasing natives and maintaining a general alien pool,allowing the coexistence of *** interactions including facilitation and/or tolerance processes might be occurring in chilean post-agricultural grasslands,a fact that contradicts the accepted idea of the alien species as contenders.

Antimicrobial Potential and Phytochemical Content of Six Diverse Sources of Quinoa Seeds (<i>Chenopodium quinoa</i>Willd.)

Antimicrobial potential of quinoa seeds from six diverse seeds, grown in three distinctive geo-graphical zones of Chile, was correlated with their total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total saponin content (TSC). The six seeds were Ancovinto, Cancosa, Cahuil, Faro, Regalona and Villarrica. A significant influence of quinoa source on chemical composition of seeds was observed. Extracts of all quinoa samples showed antimicrobial activity in the range of 8.3 - 14.8 mm inhibition zone for E. coli and 8.5 - 15.0 mm inhibition zone for S. aureus. Cancosa seeds had the highest antimicrobial action. The TPC and TFC ranged from 3.71 to 16.55 mg GA/100 g d.m. and 7.77 to 14.37 mg QE/100 g d.m., respectively. TSC varied from 1.78 to 3.08 g/100 g d.m. A cor-relation between TFC and antimicrobial activity was found. In conclusion, the six types of quinoa seeds were identified as potential sources of antioxidant compounds and antimicrobial activity.

We present a 29-year-old woman with a long history of attacks of migraine with and without visual *** was a heavy smoker(20 cigarettes/d) and was currently taking oral contraceptives. During a typical migraine attack with aura, she developed dysarthria,left brachial hemiparesis and hemihypoesthesia and brief and autolimited left clonic facial movements. Four hours after onset, vascular headache and focal sensorimotor neurological deficit were the only persisting symptoms and, on seventh day, she was completely recovered. Brain magnetic resonance imaging on day 20 after onset showed a subacute ischemic lesion in the right temporo-parietal cortex compatible with cortical laminar necrosis(CLN). Extensive neurological work-up done to rule out other known causes of cerebral infarct with CLN was unrevealing. Only ten of 3.808 consecutive stroke patients included in our stroke registry over a 19-year period fulfilled the strictly defined International headache Society criteria for migrainous stroke. The present case is the unique one in our stroke registry that presents CLN related to migrainous cerebral infarction. Migrainous infarction can result in CLN.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has brought negative effects to the environment produced by the materials that compose them. The proper implementation of management plans of WEEE should integrate measures to prevent, mitigate and correct these affectations. As an initial step, it is necessary to make a diagnosis of the current situation of WEEE management which is the objective of this work. The studied zone was composed by the municipalities of Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira located in southeast Tamaulipas, Mexico. The descriptive analysis of technical and regulatory aspects of the current management system in the study area was developed, including generation rates and analysis of waste streams. Among the main results, the generation of WEEE was estimated in 2040.38 tons/year for 2013, distributed in the municipalities of Tampico with 830.93 tons/year, Altamira with 650.18 tons/year, and Ciudad Madero with 559.27 tons/year. This calculation was estimated using Mexico’s WEEE generation indicators. The analysis of waste streams includes five categories of WEEE, Televisions with 61% of the total generation, followed by sound devices with 18%, personal computers with 17%;mobile phones with 2% as well as fixed phones with 1%. In the study area, reports of Tampico’s municipality indicated that 96 tons of WEEE was collected in the city of Tampico in 2013. In México, the national legislation considers WEEE in the category of waste requiring special handling (WRSh), however, it exists an inadequacy in the environmental laws about the specific classification of this kind of debris that makes their effective management more difficult. No companies who provide a management or treatment operations for WEEE are reported in Tampico, or in the near region. In addition, despite an initial interest for the municipality to attend the WEEE problematic, it exists a lack of sensibility of the population in the absence of environmental education programs.

México has extensive areas that have been impacted by oil spills for several decades. Current bioremediation technologies mostly used microorganisms to decontaminate sites with hydrocarbons. This research evaluated the conditions for the optimal development of the strain of a hydrocarbonoclastic fungus, which was found in samples of soil contaminated with 4.0 × 105 mg·kg-1 of Total Petroleum hydrocarbons (TPh). A completely randomized experimental design with a 3 × 3 × 4 factor arrangement was used: three levels of temperature (T1 = 29℃, T2 = 35℃ and T3 = 40℃), three of ph (ph1 = 3.5, ph2 = 5.0 and ph3 = 6.0) and four nutrients (N1 = Urea, N2 = Triple-17, N3 = Nitrophoska-Blue and N4 = Pure-Salts). Total fungi were isolated from the sampled soil and were sown in a combined carbon medium for hydrocarbonoclastic fungi and a strain was selected to be adapted to a liquid mineral medium. The selected strain was classified as Penicillium sp. Analyses of variance and mean tests were performed, using the SPSS-11.0 statistical software. The microorganisms showed the highest population growth in the treatment N2ph2T1, which reached a value of 2.1 × 106 CFU·mL-1 in a biorreactor. To reach it, by bioaugmentation, the same development of Penicillium sp. in a conditioned soil would allow to implement a bioremediation strategy with great potential to retrieve soil contaminated with hydrocarbons both in Tabasco and in general in Mexico.

Pure motor stroke as the most frequent lacunar syndrome: A clinical update

Pure motor stroke(PMS), also known as pure motor hemiparesis, is the most common of any lacunar form(between one half and two thirds of cases, depending on the series). In an acute stroke registry, 733 patients presented a lacunar infarct and PMS accounted for 12.7%(n = 342) of all first-ever stroke patients and for 48% of all lacunar syndromes. The posterior limb of the internal capsule, corona radiata, and pons are the most frequent brain topographies. Infarcts in the mesencephalus or medullary pyramid have been exceptionally reported. This present update is focused on the clinical evidence and mechanisms underlying the relationship between PMS and different stroke etiologies.
