Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by motor impairments caused by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra.Levodopa is an effective and well-tolerated dopamine replacement agent.However,levodopa provides only symptomatic improvements,without affecting the underlying pathology,and is associated with side effects after long-term use.Cell-based replacement is a promising strategy that offers the possibility to replace lost neurons in Parkinson’s disease treatment.Clinical studies of transplantation of human fetal ventral mesencephalic tissue have provided evidence that the grafted dopaminergic neurons can reinnervate the striatum,release dopamine,integrate into the host neural circuits,and improve motor functions.One of the limiting factors for cell therapy in Parkinson’s disease is the low survival rate of grafted dopaminergic cells.Different factors could cause cell death of dopaminergic neurons after grafting such as mechanical trauma,growth factor deprivation,hypoxia,and neuroinflammation.neurotrophic factors play an essential role in the survival of grafted cells.However,direct,timely,and controllable delivery of neurotrophic factors into the brain faces important limitations.Different types of cells secrete neurotrophic factors constitutively and co-transplantation of these cells with dopaminergic neurons represents a feasible strategy to increase neuronal survival.In this review,we provide a general overview of the pioneering studies on cell transplantation developed in patients and animal models of Parkinson’s disease,with a focus on neurotrophic factor-secreting cells,with a particular interest in mesenchymal stromal cells;that co-implanted with dopaminergic neurons would serve as a strategy to increase cell survival and improve graft outcomes.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)for forest monitoring has grown significantly in recent years,providing information with high spatial resolution and temporal versatility.UAV with multispectral sensors allow the use of indexes such as the normalized difference vegetation index(nDVI),which determines the vigor,physiological stress and photo synthetic activity of vegetation.This study aimed to analyze the spectral responses and variations of nDVI in tree crowns,as well as their correlation with climatic factors over the course of one year.The study area encompassed a 1.6-ha site in Durango,Mexico,where Pinus cembroides,Pinus engelmannii,and Quercus grisea coexist.Multispectral images were acquired with UAV and information on meteorological variables was obtained from nASA/POWER database.An AnOVA explored possible differences in nDVI among the three species.Pearson correlation was performed to identify the linear relationship between nDVI and meteorological variables.Significant differences in nDVI values were found at the genus level(Pinus and Quercus),possibly related to the physiological features of the species and their phenology.Quercus grisea had the lowest nDVI values throughout the year which may be attributed to its sensitivity to relative humidity and temperatures.Although the use of UAV with a multispectral sensor for nDVI monitoring allowed genera differentiation,in more complex forest analyses hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors should be integrated,as well other vegetation indexes be considered.

BACKGROUnD The prevalence of heart failure(HF)increases with age,and it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death in older patients.However,there are little data on in-hospital mortality in patients with HF≥75 years in Spain.METHODS A retrospective analysis of the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set was performed,including all HF episodes discharged from public hospitals in Spain between 2016 and 2019.Coding was performed using the International Classification of Diseases,10th Revision.Patients≥75 years with HF as the principal diagnosis were selected.We calculated:(1)the crude in-hospital mortality rate and its distribution according to age and sex;(2)the risk-standardized in-hospital mortality ratio;and(3)the association between in-hospital mortality and the availability of an intensive cardiac care unit(ICCU)in the hospital.RESULTS We included 354,792 HF episodes of patients over 75 years.The mean age was 85.2±5.5 years,and 59.2%of patients were women.The most frequent comorbidities were renal failure(46.1%),diabetes mellitus(35.5%),valvular disease(33.9%),cardiorespiratory failure(29.8%),and hypertension(26.9%).In-hospital mortality was 12.7%,and increased with age[odds ratio(OR)=1.07,95%CI:1.07–1.07,Pnd was lower in women(OR=0.96,95%CI:0.92–0.97,Pn predictors of mortality were the presence of cardiogenic shock(OR=19.5,95%CI:16.8–22.7,Pnd advanced cancer(OR=2.6,95%CI:2.5–2.8,Pn hospitals with ICCU,the in-hospital risk-adjusted mortality tended to be lower(OR=0.85,95%CI:0.72–1.00,P=0.053).COnCLUSIOnS In-hospital mortality in patients with HF≥75 years between 2016 and 2019 was 12.7%,higher in males and elderly patients.The main predictors of mortality were cardiogenic shock,stroke,and advanced cancer.There was a trend toward lower mortality in centers with an ICCU.

Cholangiopathies are a group of diseases primarily or secondarily affecting bile duct cells, and result in cholangiocyte proliferation, regression, and/or transformation. Their etiopathogenesis may be associated with a broad variety of causes of different nature, which includes genetic, neoplastic, immune-associated, infectious, vascular, and drug-induced alterations, or being idiopathic. miRnAs, small non-coding endogenous RnAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expres sion, have been associated with pathophysiological processes in different organs and cell types, and are postulated as potential targets for diagnosis and therapy. In the current manuscript, knowledge regarding the role of miRnAs in the development and/or progression of cholangiopathies has been reviewed and the most relevant findings in this promising field of hepatology have been highlighted.

Recent studies highlight the strong correlation between infectious diseases and the development of neuropsychiatric disorders.In this editorial,we comment on the article“Anti-infective therapy durations predict psychological stress and laparoscopic surgery quality in pelvic abscess patients”by Zhang et al,published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Psychiatry 2023;13(11):903-911.Our discussion highlighted the potential consequences of anxiety,depression,and psychosis,which are all linked to bacterial,fungal,and viral infections,which are relevant to the impact of inflammation on the sequelae in mental health as those we are observing after the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.We focus specifically on the immune mechanisms triggered by inflammation,the primary contributor to psychiatric complications.Importantly,pathophysiological mechanisms such as organ damage,post-injury inflammation,and infectioninduced endocrine alterations,including hypocortisolism or autoantibody formation,significantly contribute to the development of chronic low-grade inflammation,promoting the emergence or development of psychiatric alterations in susceptible individuals.As inflammation can have long-term effects on patients,a multidisciplinary treatment plan can avoid complications and debilitating health issues,and it is crucial to recognize and address the mental health implications.

The present work reports the discovery and the complete characterisation of an ancient cultivated rose variety found growing in a private garden in the southwest of the Principality of Asturias(northern Spain).The variety is here given the name narcea.The majority of roses currently cultivated belong to the so-called group of‘Modern Roses’,all of which were obtained after 1867 via artificial crosses and improvement programmes.All are destined for ornamental use.Until the 19th century,the great majority of the many ancient cultivated roses in Europe were used in perfumery and cosmetics,or had medicinal uses.Rosa damascena and Rosa centifollia are still grown and used by the French and Bulgarian perfume industries.The Asturian Massif of the Cantabrian Mountain Range provides a natural habitat for some 75%of the wild members of the genus Rosa,but until now there was no evidence that this area was home to ancient cultivated roses.A complete botanical description is here provided for a discovered ancient rose.It is also characterised according to a series of sequence tagged microsatellite sites,and its agronomic features are reported.In addition,a histological description(optical and scanning electronic microscope studies)of the petals is offered,along with an analysis of the volatile compounds present in these organs as determined by solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy.The results reveal the uniqueness of this ancient type of rose and suggest it may be of interest to the perfume industry.

Green and Sustainable Software has emerged as a new and highly active area in the software community.After several years of research and work,we believe that it is now necessary to obtain a general snapshot of how the research in this area is evolving.To do so,we have applied the 5 Ws(why,when,who,where,and what),a formula for getting the complete story on a subject.We have therefore carried out a study,using 542 publications related to Green and Sustainable Software research;these were recovered using SCOPUS.The results obtained allow us to conclude that it is important to identify key elements of the research to allow researchers be fully aware of the state of the research on Green and Sustainable Software(why);the study uses papers published between 2000 and the beginning of november 2018(when);the most prolific authors are mainly from Europe,although the USA is the most active country,Green and Sustainable Software being a very interactive area with a good number of multinational publications(who);the top five keywords related to sustainable aspects are Green Software,Green IT,Software Sustainability,Energy Consumption,and Energy Efficiency(what);finally,as regards the places authors prefer to publish in,there is almost a complete balance between conferences and journals,with a trend towards an increase in the number of publications(where).

Appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors(anETs)are an uncommon neoplasm that is relatively indolent in most cases.They are typically diagnosed in younger patients than other neuroendocrine tumors and are often an incidental finding after an appendectomy.Although there are numerous clinical practice guidelines on management of a nETs,there is continues to be a dearth of evidence on optimal treatment.Management of these tumors is stratified according to risk of locoregional and distant metastasis.However,there is a lack of consensus regarding tumors that measure 1-2 cm.In these cases,some histopathological features such as size,tumor grade,presence of lymphovascular invasion,or mesoappendix infiltration must also be considered.Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans are recommended for evaluating the presence of additional disease,except in the case of tumors smaller than 1 cm without additional risk factors.Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy or positron emission tomography with computed tomography should be considered in cases with suspected residual or distant disease.The main point of controversy is the indication for performing a completion right hemicolectomy after an initial appendectomy,based on the risk of lymph node metastases.The main factor considered is tumor size and 2 cm is the most common threshold for indicating a colectomy.Other factors such as mesoappendix infiltration,lymphovascular invasion,or tumor grade may also be considered.On the other hand,potential complications,and decreased quality of life after a hemicolectomy as well as the lack of evidence on benefits in terms of survival must be taken into consideration.In this review,we present data regarding the current indications,outcomes,and benefits of a colectomy.
