Background: Cardiac involvement and the consequences of inflammation induced by SARS-CoV2 infection could have catastrophic long-term consequences. Left ventricular mechanics could identify a specific pattern of myocardial fiber damage in patients infected with COVID-19. To our knowledge there are no publications referring to the global description of ventricular mechanics in patients with COVID-19. Objective: To describe left ventricular mechanics in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 40 hospitalized patients with confirmed diagnostic of COVID-19, from April 11, 2020, to September 6, 2020. Demographic and laboratory data, clinical and echocardiographic characteristics were collected, as well as events during hospitalization. Left ventricular deformation was analyzed and reported. Results: Subclinical dysfunction was observed in 82.5% (left ventricular longitudinal strain [LVGLS] -17.05% and global circumferential strain [GCS] -18.6%) of the patients, likewise, the mean twist and apical rotation were preserved, and even increased as part of the compensating mechanism to maintain the ejection fraction. Conclusion: In patients hospitalized with COVID-19, despite having a normal left ventricular ejection fraction, subclinical myocardial damage was found, manifested by a decrease in Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) and Global Circumferential Strain (GCS). This behavior is similar to that of cardiomyopathies in the early stage of the disease, and given the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the disease, its long-term consequences should be monitored and evaluated.

The main goal is to compare the antioxidant potential of rosemary and oregano natural extracts in precooked beef burger by assessing the lipid oxidation extent and sensory analysis. Five formulations (F) of hamburger were prepared from beef and mechanically separated as follows: meat containing sodium erythorbate (F1);deodorized rosemary extract (F2);oregano extract (F3);rosemary plus oregano extracts (F4) and without antioxidant addition, denominated control formulation (CF). The samples were frozen at ?18°C for 24 hours, then submitted to heat treatment in an electric oven with internal controlled temperature of 75°C, and again frozen for a period of 30 days. The lipid oxidation extent (determined by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances— TBRS) was evaluated at 0, 15 during 30 days. After heating in plate to temperature of 75°C, the samples were submitted to color, taste and odor evaluation by 40 untrained tasters. The formulations F1, F2 and F4 presented lower concentrations of TBRS, whereas CF at day zero already showed very high values, indicating oxidation of the product. The samples showed good acceptance in the sensorial analysis.

Genetic Diversity Analysis of Jatropha Species from Costa Rica Using AFLP Markers

The genetic diversity from species of the genus Jatropha collected from Costa Rica was analyzed by AFLP (amplified fragments length polymorphism). The study consisted of 114 accessions from 15 populations of 4 different species: J. curcas, J. costaricensis, J. gossypifolia and J. stevensii. These were collected from different locations in Costa Rica. Three different primers were used, resulting in 428 loci, and they were classified in three categories: unique and double bands (UBD), rare bands (RB) and shared bands (SB). The UBD were excluded for a total of 339 polymorphic loci used for the UPGMA dendrogram and principal component analysis (PCA). The species that obtained the highest average of polymorphic loci was J. curcas, which obtained the highest percentage of polymorphic loci (80.24%), followed by J. gossypifolia (79.35%), J. costaricensis (78.76%), and finally J. stevensii (40.71%). The average for the polymorphic loci was of 69.76%. Thus, the phylogeny of the Jatropha species in Costa Rica was elucidated, showing J. curcas more related to J. stevensii and this one with J. costaricensis, and J. gossypifolia as the most distant member of the genus. For the best of our knowledge this is the first report of a genetic analysis of J. costaricensis and J. stevensii. The obtained molecular evidence showed high levels of polymorphisms in the present study compared with reports from Africa, India, and China. The molecular diversity estimated in our analysis, together with agronomical or morphological data, can be very useful for plant breeding programs, given the importance of Jatropha species in oil production. Interestingly, Central American Jatropha material can be used to increase the genetic base of J. curcas populations localized in Asia and Africa, where reduced genetic diversity has been reported.

Effect of Gamma Irradiation and Selection with Fungus Filtrate(Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn)on the in Vitro Culture of Common Bean(Phaseolus vulgaris)

The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of gamma irradiation (dose from 10 to 100 Gy) and in vitro selection with fungus filtrate as selecting agent (concentration from 20% to 100%) on the susceptibility of the common bean to Rhizoctonia solani. The best results were found with a dose of 20 Gy or a concentration of 20% of fungus filtrate applied separately. These conditions were used to evaluate the combined effect of both approaches in a second experiment. The combined effect of irradiation and then selection adversely affected growth (height and roots) and survival of the in vitro plants. It may not be necessary to combine the variation generated by irradiation with the selection technique. For future assays we propose the application of: 1) gamma radiation, thereby inducing not only mutants with pathogen resistance, but also with other agronomic traits of interest. Later in the subculture MV4 potential fungus-resistant mutants will be evaluated in the field;or 2) selection pressure using fungus filtrate during three subcultures, which may be sufficient to induce the variation necessary to obtain in vitro plants resistant to fungus.

Kinetic and Thermodynamic Study of Arsenic (V) Adsorption on P and W Aluminum Functionalized Zeolites and Its Regeneration

In the “Laguna” region of Coahuila state, Mexico like other places in the world, the groundwater needs to be treated to meet the quality required for human consumption. The study had probed that a Mexican fly ash can be used as a raw material to obtain effective low cost adsorbents for drinking water treatment, as well evaluated the effects of pH, ion coexistence, dose, arsenic (As) concentration and temperature on the As(V) uptake by using P and W modified zeolites (PMOD and WMOD) obtained from a Mexican fly ash. The As(V) adsorption capacity of the WMOD zeolite was not affected by pH and As(V) concentrations in aqueous solution was achieved 0.01 mg/L in the studied pH range;however, the As(V) removal by using PMOD zeolite decreased at high pH values. Carbonate concentration had a negative effect on the As(V) uptake of both zeolites but this effect was higher for the PMOD zeolite. The maximum adsorption capacities (Qmax) were 76.11 and 44.44 mg of As(V)/g of zeolite for the WMOD and the PMOD zeolites, respectively. The adsorption process was endothermic, spontaneous and occurred by chemical exchange. The experimental data were best interpreted by a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The WMOD zeolite showed a higher adsorption capacity and rate than the PMOD even at the highest evaluated As(V) concentration. The adsorption capacity of the regenerated WMOD zeolite was similar to the original zeolite. Because of the high As(V) adsorption capacity, chemical stability and regenerability, the WMOD zeolite is potentially useful as low-cost adsorbent for As(V) removal from aqueous effluents.

AIM:To analyze the role of rs12979860 and rs8099917polymorphisms in hepatitis C virus(HCV)genotype 1infection of ***:A total of 145 adult patients diagnosed with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C(CHC)who had completed a 48-wk regimen of pegylated-interferonα-2a or-2b plus ribavirin combination therapy were recruited from six large urban healthcare centers and199 healthy blood donors(controls)from a single site between January 2010 and January *** on the patients’response to treatment was *** chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism genotyping of the interleukin(IL)28B gene fragment encompassing the single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)rs12979860(C/T)and rs8099917(T/G)was carried out for 79 of the CHC patients and 199 of the ***-directional amplicon sequencing of the two SNPs was carried out for the remaining 66 CHC ***:SNP rs12979860 genotyping was successful in 99.5%of the controls and 97.2%of the CHC patients,whereas the SNP rs8099917 genotyping was successful in 95.5%of the controls and 100%of the CHC *** genotype and allele distributions for both rs12979860 and rs8099917 were significantly different between the control and CHC patient groups,with significantly higher genotype frequencies of CC and TT in the controls(P=0.037 and 0.046,respectively)and of TT and GG in the CHC patients(P=0.0009and 0.0001,respectively).Analysis of the CHC patients who achieved sustained virological response(SVR)to treatment(n=55)indicated that the rs12979860 C allele and CC genotype were predictors of SVR(P=0.02).No significant correlation was found between rs8099917 genotypes and treatment response,but carriers of the T allele showed significantly higher rates of SVR(P=0.02).Linkage disequilibrium analysis of the group that achieved SVR showed a significant association between rs12979860 and rs8099917(P=0.07).CONCLUSION:The higher allele frequency of rs12979860 C and rs8099917 T observed in non-HCVinfec

Sunitinib effectiveness and safety as first line treatment in metastatic renal cell carcinoma,in the Costa Rican population

Aim:Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are part of the armamentarium to treat metastatic renal cell carcinomas(mRCC).Costa Rica has approved sunitinib in the first line *** authors conducted a retrospective study to address the effectiveness and safety profile of sunitinib in our population in terms of overall survival(OS)and progression free survival(PFS).Methods:The authors analyzed all patients who were treated with sunitinib diagnosed with mRCC in the three National Hospitals(Hospital Mexico,Hospital San Juan de Dios,and Hospital Calderon Guardia)from February 2007 to June ***,safety profile,and efficacy(OS and PFS)were obtained from medical *** and PFS were calculated using the Kaplan Meier method and a Cox Proportional Model Analysis was used when OS and PFS were compared in subset of ***:Seventy-seven patients were included;mean age was 58.9 ***-four patients were male(70.1%).The most common histologic type was clear cell carcinoma(87%),followed by papillary(9.1%)and chromophobe(2.0%)*** OS was 21.0 months[95%confidence interval(CI):13.42-28.58].Median PFS was 13.7 months(95%CI:11.24-16.16).Patients aged 65 years or older experienced worse PFS and OS than younger patients(median PFS:8.2 vs.17.6 months;P=0.011)(median OS:19.0 vs.29.0 months;P=0.022).Sunitinib was well tolerated and no serious side effects were ***:This is the first study in Central America showing that sunitinib,first line,in mRCC is as effective as reported in pivotal clinical trials and expanded use studies in terms of PFS and OS.
