BACKGROUND Penetrating arrow injuries of the head and neck are exceedingly rare in pediatric patients.This pathology has high morbidity and mortality because of the presence of vital organs,the airway,and large vessels.Therefore,the treatment and removal of an arrow is a challenge that requires multidisciplinary management.CASE SUMMARY A 13-year-old boy was brought to the emergency room after an arrow injury to the frontal region.The arrowhead was lodged in the oropharynx.Imaging studies showed a lesion of the paranasal sinuses without compromising vital structures.The arrow was successfully removed by retrograde nasoendoscopy without complications,and the patient was discharged.CONCLUSION Although rare,maxillofacial arrow injuries have high morbidity and mortality and require multidisciplinary management to preserve function and aesthetics.

Objective:To investigate the effects of different concentrations of N-acetylcysteine on follicular growth and morphology,as well as on viability,levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS)and meiotic progression of oocytes from in vitro cultured bovine early antral follicles.Methods:Isolated early antral follicles(about 500μm)were cultured in TCM-199+alone or supplemented with 1.0,5.0 or 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine at 38.5℃with 5%CO_(2) for 8 days.Follicle diameters were evaluated at day 0,4 and 8 of culture.At the end of culture,the levels of ROS,chromatin configuration and viability(calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1 staining)were investigated in the cumulus-oocyte complexes.Comparisons of follicle diameters between treatments were performed.Data on percentages of morphologically normal follicles,growth rates and chromatin configuration in different treatments were compared.Results:An increase in follicular diameters after culture in all treatments was observed,except for follicles cultured with 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine.Fluorescence microscopy showed that oocytes cultured in all treatments were stained positively with calcein AM,and that 5.0 mM N-acetylcysteine reduced fluorescence for ethidium homodimer-1.Intracellular levels of ROS in oocytes from follicles cultured with 1.0 mM N-acetylcysteine showed a significant reduction compared to other treatments.The presence of N-acetylcysteine in culture medium did not influence the rates of oocyte at the germinal vesicle stage.Conclusions:N-acetylcysteine at concentrations of 1.0 and 5.0 mM reduces ROS levels and staining for ethidium homodimer-1 in in vitro cultured follicles,respectively,while 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine decreases follicular growth and the percentages of continuously growing follicles.

Patterns of variation in the size of vulture foraging groups,and their ecological causes and consequences,remain litle explored despite strong links with the carrion recycling service that this key functional group provides.We documented the group size-frequency pattern of Andean con-dors Vultur gryphus gathered to feed on 42 equine carcasses experimentally placed in Bolivia,between 2012 and 2019,along an elevation range of 1,300-4,500 m asl.Based on the location(altitude and latitude)of the foraging groups,we examined the relationship between their size and species'population parameters(size and trend),habitat conditions,and livestock carcass availability and predictability.Condors utilized a high frequency(93%)of carcasses forming groups that ranged from 1 to 80 individuals(mean=25,median=18)and shaped a"lazy-J curve"typical pattern of size-frequency distribution whereby few groups(5,12%)were large(>55 individuals)and most(21,50%)were relatively small(lated to altitude in that most larger groups formed at lower sites(below c.3,000 m asl),likely following an altitudinal gradient whereby larger groups are more likely to form around larger carcasses(i.e.,cattle),which are more likely to occur at lower elevations.Regardless of population size,group size could be an adaptive response of condors via local enhancement for improving individual scavenging efficiency.Many information gaps on this topic still exist,thus we provide a set of questions to address them,especially amidst the unrestricted impacts of human activities that condition vulture survival globally.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a disease characterized by upper and lower motor neuron(MN)loss with a signature feature of cytoplasmic aggregates containing TDP-43,which are detected in nearly all patients.Mutations in the gene that encodes TDP-43(TARBDP)are known to result in both familial and sporadic ALS.In ALS,disruption of neuro-muscular junctions(NMJs)constitutes a critical event in disease pathogenesis,leading to denervation atrophy,motor impairments and disability.Morphological defects and impaired synaptic transmission at NMJs have been reported in several TDP-43 animal models and in vitro,linking TDP-43 dysregulation to the loss of NMJ integrity in ALS.Through the lens of the dying-back and dying-forward hypotheses of ALS,this review discusses the roles of TDP-43 related to synaptic function,with a focus on the potential molecular mechanisms occurring within MNs,skeletal muscles and glial cells that may contribute to NMJ disruption in ALS.

To decide when a graph is Gromov hyperbolic is,in general,a very hard problem.In this paper,we solve this problem for the set of short graphs（in an informal way,a graph G is r-short if the shortcuts in the cycles of G have length less than r）：an r-short graph G is hyperbolic if and only if S9r（G）is finite,where SR（G）：=sup{L（C）：C is an R-isometric cycle in G}and we say that a cycle C is R-isometric if dC（x,y）≤dG（x,y）＋R for every x,y∈C.

Dietary studies are essential to unravel the functioning of ecosystems and ultimately to understand biodiversity.This task,which at first may seem simple,becomes especially complex in those cases of omnivorous species with highly variable diets.In this regard,the emergence of next-generation DNA sequencing methodologies represents a powerful tool to address the problem.Here we implement a high-throughput metabarcoding strategy based on the analysis of four molecular markers aimed at sequencing both mitochondrial(animal prey)and chloroplast(diet plants)genome fragments from fecal samples of two lizard species endemic to the Balearic Archipelago(Podarcis lilfordi and P.pityusensis)obtained through non-invasive methods.The results allowed for the characterization of their diets with a high degree of taxonomic detail and have contributed a large number of new trophic records.The reported diets are based mainly on the consumption of arthropods,mollusks and plants from a diversity of taxonomic orders,as well as carrion and marine subsidies.Our analyses also reveal inter-and intra-specific differences both in terms of seasonality and geographical distribution of the sampled lizard populations.These molecular findings provide new insights into the trophic interactions of these threatened endemic lizards in their unique and isolated ecosystems.
