The “elimination” of chemical additives used in a wide variety of foods is demanded, while “natural” additives are seen as a benefit for both quality and safety. Researchers are looking for new sources of ingredients and/or additives. The aim of this work was to study the effect of 1) the addition of 5.00% citrus fibre washing water (CFWW) and 0.02% rosemary essential oil (REO) or 0.02 % thyme essential oil (TEO) and 2) storage conditions on the chemical, microbe- ological and sensorial properties of mortadellas, a bologna-type sausage. CFWW + REO or CFWW + TEO samples stored in vacuum packaging showed the lowest TBA values. The resulting products were packed either in vacuum, modified atmosphere or air pouches and stored for 24 days. Lipid oxidation was assessed by the TBA method, while a quantitative descriptive analysis was carried out for sensory evaluation. Microbiological counts were also determined. CFWW + REO samples stored in vacuum packaging showed the lowest counts of aerobic and lactic acid bacteria. The sensory evaluation provided similar scores for CFWW + REO and CFWW + TEO samples. The lowest scores were obtained for control mortadella stored in air packaging. The addition of citrus fibre washing water and spice essential oils is a technologically viable alternative in emulsified meat products, since they improve customer acceptance and have desirable effects as regards oxidative stability and reduced microbial growth, which contributes to prolonging their shelf-life.

Estimating the global position of a road vehicle without using GpS is a challenge that many scientists look forward to solving in the near future. Normally, inertial and odometry sensors are used to complement GpS measures in an attempt to provide a means for maintaining vehicle odometry during GpS outage. Nonetheless, recent experiments have demonstrated that computer vision can also be used as a valuable source to provide what can be denoted as visual odometry. For this purpose, vehicle motion can be estimated using a non-linear, photogrametric approach based on RAndom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC). The results prove that the detection and selection of relevant feature points is a crucial factor in the global performance of the visual odometry algorithm. The key issues for further improvement are discussed in this letter.

Abscisic acid(ABA)is an important hormone that regulates both plant development and stress responses(Chen et al.,2020).In the absence of ABA,group A pROTEIN pHOSpHATASE 2Cs(pp2Cs)interact with and inhibit SUCROSE-NON-FERMENTING 1-RELATED KINASES 2(SnRK2s).When ABA is present,ABA receptor pYRABACTIN RESISTANCE 1 and pYRABACTIN RESISTANCE 1-LIKE pROTEINS bind to and inhibit pp2Cs,allowing phosphorylation and activation of SnRK2s that,in turn,phosphorylate downstream targets,such as transcription factors,ion channels,and transporters(Figure 1).

Background： The aim of this study was to estimate variance components and to identify genomic regions and pathways associated with resistance to gastrointestinal parasites, particularly Haemonchus contortus, in a breed of sheep adapted to tropical climate. phenotypes evaluations were performed to verify resistance to gastrointestinal parasites, and were divided into two categories： i） farm phenotypes, assessing body condition score（BCS）, degree of anemia assessed by the famacha chart（FAM）, fur score（FS） and feces consistency（FC）; and ii） lab phenotypes,comprising blood analyses for hematocrit（HCT）, white blood cell count（WBC）, red blood cell count（RBC）,hemoglobin（HGB）, platelets（pLT） and transformed（log10） egg per gram of feces（EpG_（log））. A total of 576 animals were genotyped with the Ovine SNp12k Bead Chip（Illumina, Inc.）, that contains 12,785 bialleleic SNp markers. The variance components were estimated using a single trait model by single step genomic BLUp ***： The overall linkage disequilibrium（LD） mean between pairs of markers measured by r2 was 0.23. The overall LD mean between markers considering windows up to 10 Mb was 0.07. The mean LD between adjacent SNps across autosomes ranged from 0.02 to 0.10. Heritability estimates were low for EpG_（log）（0.11）, moderate for RBC（0.18）, pLT（0.17） HCT（0.20）, HGB（0.16） and WBC（0.22）, and high for FAM（0.35）. A total of 22, 21, 23, 20, 26, 25 and 23 windows for EpG_（log）for FAM, WBC, RBC, pLT, HCT and HGB traits were identified, respectively. AIM:To analyze our results after the introduction of a fast-track(FT) program after laparoscopic liver surgery in our Hepatobiliarypancreatic ***:All patients(43) undergoing laparoscopic liver surgery between March 2004 and March 2010 were included and divided into two consecutive groups:Control group(CG) from March 2004 until December 2006 with traditional perioperative cares(17 patients) and fast-track group(FTG) from January 2007 until March 2010 with FT program cares(26 patients).primary endpoint was the influence of the program on the postoperative stay,the amount of re-admissions,morbidity and *** we considered duration of surgery,use of drains,conversion to open surgery,intensive cares needs and ***:Both groups were homogeneous in age and *** differences in technique,time of surgery or conversion to open surgery were found,but more malignant diseases were operated in the FTG,and then transfusions were higher in *** and morbidity were similar in both groups,without *** stay was similar,with a median of 3 for CG vs 2.5 for ***,the 80.8% of patients from FTG left the hospital within the first 3 d after surgery(58.8% for CG).CONCLUSION:The introduction of a FT program after laparoscopic liver surgery improves the recovery of patients without increasing complications or re-admissions,which leads to a reduction of the stay and costs.

To determine the antioxidant activity of the water (WE), methanol (ME), ethanol (EE) and ethyl acetate extracts (EAE) from the leaves of Cistus monspeliensis, several methods such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DppH) radical-scavenging assay, 2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay, reducing power assay, metal chelating assay, Thiobarbituric acid test (TBARS) and β-carotene linoleic acid system assay were investigated. Because of the important roles of total phenolics and total flavonoids as antioxidants, the amounts of total phenolics and total flavonoids in the extracts were also determined. The WE and ME showed a higher scavenging activity on the DppH and ABTS radical. Both extracts also exhibited a strong chelating effect on Fe2+ and performed the best in the reducing power assay. On the other hand, the WE and ME were found to have the higher total phenolic contents (23.13 and 23.25 mg GAE/g of extract respectively) and total flavonoid contents (55.08 and 47.77 mg rutin/g of extract respectively). Thus, both extracts are promising alternatives to synthetic substances as food ingredients with antioxidant activity. The ME and the WE showed the similar levels in phenolic content.

BACKGROUND The gut microbiota plays a key role in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis and the development and activation of the host immune system. It has been shown that commensal bacterial species can regulate the expression of host genes. 16 S rRNA gene sequencing has shown that the microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is abnormal and characterized by reduced diversity. Micro RNAs(miRNAs) have been explored as biomarkers and therapeutic targets, since they are able to regulate specific genes associated with Crohn's disease(CD). In this work, we aim to investigate the composition of gut microbiota of active treatment-na?ve adult CD patients, with miRNA profile from gut *** To investigate the composition of gut microbiota of active treatment-na?ve adult CD patients, with miRNA profile from gut *** patients attending the outpatient clinics at Valme University Hospital without relevant co-morbidities were matched according to age and gender. Faecal samples of newonset CD patients, free of treatment, and healthy controls were collected. Faecal samples were homogenized, and DNA was amplified by pCR using primers directed to the 16 S bacterial rRNA gene. pyrosequencing was performed using GS-Junior platform. Choroidal osteoma (CO) is a rare, ossifying benign tumor originated in the choroid that typically occurs in otherwise healthy young women (1,2). It is characterized by a yellowish, well demarcated lesion in the juxtapapillary or macular area. The diagnosis is clinical and can be confirmed with the use of fluorescein or indocyanine angiography, optical coherence tomography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Choroidal neovascularization or subretinal fluid, the main causes for vision loss, can be treated with laser therapy, photodynamic therapy or intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy. We present a case of choroidal osteoma, showing the role of the high resolution 3D spiral computed tomography.

T-cell allorecognition of donor glutathione S-transferase T1 in plasma cell-rich rejection

AIM To investigate the role of glutathione S-transferase T1 donor-specific T lymphocytes in plasma cell-rich rejection of liver *** The study group included 22 liver transplant patients. Among them, 18 patients were mismatched for the glutathione S-transferase T1(GSTT1) alleles(don+/rec-), and 4 were matched(don+/rec+). Seven of the mismatched patients produced anti-GSTT1 antibodies and developed plasma cell-rich rejection(former de novo immune hepatitis). For the detection of specific Tlymphocytes, peripheral blood mononuclear cells were collected and stored in liquid nitrogen. The memory T cell response was studied by adding to the cell cultures to a mix of 39 custom-made, 15-mer overlapping peptides, which covered the entire GSTT1 amino acid sequence. The specific cellular response to peptides was analyzed by flow cytometry using the markers CD8, CD4, IL-4 and IFNγ.RESULTS Activation of CD8^+ T cells with different peptides was observed exclusively in the group of patients with plasma-cell rich rejection(3 out of 7), with production of IL-4 and/or IFNγ at a rate of 1%-4.92% depending on the peptides. The CD4^+ response was most common and not exclusive for patients with the disease, where 5 out of 7 showed percentages of activated cells from 1.24% to 31.34%. Additionally, two patients without the disease but with the mismatch had cells that became stimulated with some peptides(1.45%-5.18%). Highly unexpected was the finding of a double positive CD4^+CD8^(low) T cell population that showed the highest degree of activation with some of the peptides in 7 patients with the mismatch, in 4 patients with plasma cell-rich rejection and in 3 patients without the disease. Unfortunately, CD4^+CD8^(low) cells represent 1% of the total number of lymphocytes, and stimulation could not be analyzed in 9 patients due to the low number of gated cells. Cells from the 4 patients included as controls did not show activation with any of the peptides. CONCLUSION patients
