Appraising trapping efficiency of vegetative barriers in agricultural landscapes:Strategy based on a probabilistic approach based on a review of available information

Vegetative barriers have proven their effectiveness in controlling water erosion and enhancing other ecosystem services in agricultural *** characteristic has led to the conservation and promotion of vegetative barriers as landscape elements by the Common Agricultural Policy and other policy *** reviews have dealt with the trapping efficiency of vegetated barriers,although they usually focus on studies from humid climates where their implantation and survival are more ***,vegetated barriers are also an attractive alternative in arid and semi-arid *** limit competition for water and nutrients with crops to a reduced area compared to other best management practices,such as cover *** study presents a review of trapping efficiency of sediment,runoff,and nutrients(P and N)by vegetative barriers in regions of humid and arid,and semi-arid,climates,and a strategy based on sediment trapping efficiency probability,which in turn is based on the results obtained from our *** types of independent variables were grouped and identified for the review:related to the vegetative barrier dimension(buffer width,slope of the plot,and buffer area ratio),and related to the experimental conditions(type of vegetation in the buffer,soil protection of the non-buffered area,type of climate,type of experimental measurement and origin of rainfall).An explor-atory analysis evaluated the significance of the experimental variables,which identified the need to focus on experiments under natural rainfall since those carried out with simulated rainfall presented statis-tically significant *** general,average trapping efficiencies for runoff and sediment were 40.1 and 62.6%,*** nutrients,values of trapping efficiencies had an average of 44.9%for phosphorus and 38.4%for *** and sediment trapping efficiency in arid and semi-arid re-gions tended to be higher than in humid *** dimensional

In-depth analysis of soil management and farmers’perceptions of related risks in two olive grove areas in southern Spain

This manuscript presents a questionnaire-based study aimed to provide a detailed analysis on the different soil management carried out by olive farmers in two representative olive-growing areas in southern Spain(Cordoba and Estepa),their perceptions on cover crop use and the possible influence of the different types of farms and farmers’typologies on these *** results show a relatively la.ge variability of soil management,with fourteen options,as a result of a combination of different alternatives for bare soil and cover crops with the use or not of pruning residues,but with a.great similarity between both *** results indicate a high adoption of soil conservation measures in the two study areas,with 63%of farmers using cover crops and 80%a mulch of pruning residues,higher than that reported in previous studies in Southern Spain,and a trend of lower use of these techniques by less experienced and younger *** high penetration of soil conservation measures resulted in a significant reduction of soil erosion risk,as indicated by the relatively low values for the cover and management factor(C)of RUSLE,also calculated and presented in this study,but also the possibility of focusing further efforts on fanners with less *** results indicate the persistence of a minor,but relevant,percentage of farmers using bare soil management(37%)and no mulching(20%),with a moderate concern on the impact of soil erosion on soil degradation and provision of ecosystem *** suggests the need to concentrate efforts also on this cluster of farmers to enhance the success of what seems to be a remarkable expansion of the use of soil conservation measures in recent decades in Southern Spain,but also in similar areas in the Mediterranean basin.

This article outlines the major scientific objectives of the SHui project that seeks to optimize soil and water use in agricultural systems in the EU and China,by considering major current scientific challenges in this ***(for Soil Hydrology research platform underpinning innovation to manage water scarcity in European and Chinese cropping systems)is la.ge cooperative project that aims to provide significant advances through transdisciplinary research at multiple scales(plot,field,catchment and region).This paper explains our research platform of long-term experiments established at plot scale,approaches taken to integrate crop and hydrological models at field scale;coupled crop models and satellite-based observations at regional scales;decision support systems for specific farming situations;and the integration of these technologies to provide policy recommendations through socio-economic analysis of the impact of soil and water saving *** also outlines the training of stake-holders to develop a basic common curriculum despite the subject being distributed across different disciplines and *** such,this article provides a review of major challenges for improving soil and water use in EU and China as well as information about the potential to access information made available by SHui,and to allow others to engage with the project.

The present study evaluates ground-based downward surface shortwave radiation (Rs) over the coastal region of Alicante (Southeastern Spain).Hourly measurements collected over the eleven-year period 2010-2020 are *** weather stations located over the region capital,Alicante,have been selected as representative of urban and suburban *** additional weather stations far from the city have been selected representing rural *** is significantly reduced over the urban station during the morning hours within the winter season compared to the observations recorded over the suburban and rural stations,with a.global mean difference of-81 and-120 W/m^(2)at 10 LT,***,no significant differences are obtained during the midday sun,with a.global mean difference of-20 W/m^(2)between the urban and rural *** the aim of explaining these differences,the current paper investigates the relationship between Rsand different air pollutants:NOx,SO_(2),and fine particulate matter (PM_(2.5)and PM_(10)) as well as the wind field measured at the urban and suburban *** results found in this work point towards a close relationship between Rsand NOxconcentrations annual cycles,which are also influenced by the prevailing wind circulations observed over the study area.a.global mean NOxconcentration of 107μg/m^(3)is observed over the urban station at 10 LT during the winter *** contrast,these high concentrations are significantly reduced over the suburban station,with global mean value of 40μg/m^(3)at 10 LT,for this period of the year.

Steatosis and insulin resistance in hepatitis C: A way out for the virus?

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) induces lipid accumulation in vitro and in vivo. The pathogenesis of steatosis is due to both viral and host factors. Viral steatosis is mostly reported in patients with genotype 3a, whereas meta-bolic steatosis is often associated with genotype 1 and metabolic syndrome. Several molecular mechanisms responsible for steatosis have been associated with the HCV core protein, which is able to induce gene expres-sion and activity of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and peroxisome proliferator-activat-ed receptor γ (PPARγ), increasing the transcription of genes involved in hepatic fatty acid synthesis. Steatosis has been also implicated in viral replication. In infected cells, HCV core protein is ta.geted to lipid droplets which serve as intracellular storage organelles. These studies have shown that lipid droplets are essential for virus assembly. Thus, HCV promotes steatosis as an eff icient mechanism for stable viral replication. Chronic HCV in-fection can also induce insulin resistance. In patients with HCV, insulin resistance is more strongly associated with viral load than visceral obesity. HCV seems to lead to insulin resistance through interference of intracellular insulin signalling by HCV proteins, mainly, the serine phosphorylation of insulin receptor-1 (IRS-1) and im-pairment of the downstream Akt signalling pathway. The HCV core protein interferes with in vitro insulin signal-ling by genotype-specif ic mechanisms, where the role of suppressor of cytokine signal 7 (SOCS-7) in genotype 3aand mammalian ta.get of rapamycin (mTOR) in geno-type 1 in IRS-1 downregulation play key roles. Steatosis and insulin resistance have been associated with f ibrosis progression and a reduced rate of sustained response to peginterferon plus ribavirin.

Modulation of host lipid metabolism by hepatitis C virus: role of new therapies

It is well established that hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and replication relies on host lipid metabolism. HCV proteins interact and associate with lipid droplets to facilitate virion assembly and production. Besides,circulating infective particles are associated with verylow-density lipoprotein. On the other hand,higher serum lipid levels have been associated with sustained viral response to pegylated interferon and ribavirin therapy in chronic HCV infection,suggesting a relevant role in viral clearance for host proteins. Host and viral genetic factors play an essential role in chronic infection. Lipid metabolism is hijacked by viral infection and could determine the success of viral replication. Recently development of direct acting antiviral agents has shown a very high efficacy(> 90%) in sustained viral response rates even for cirrhotic patients and most of the viral genotypes. HCV RNA clearance induced by Sofosbuvir has been associated with an increased concentration and size of the low-density lipoprotein particles. In this review,host genetic factors,viral factors and the interaction between them will be depicted to clarify the major issues involved in viral infection and lipid metabolism.

Anther and pollen development:A conserved developmental pathway

Pollen development is a critical step in plant development that is needed for successful breeding and seed formation. Manipulation of male fertility has proved a useful trait for hybrid breeding and increased crop yield. However, although there is a.good understanding developing of the molecular mechanisms of anther and pollen anther development in model species, such as Arabidopsis and rice, little is known about the equivalent processes in important crops. Nevertheless the onset of increased genomic information and genetic tools is facilitating translation of information from the models to crops, such as barley and wheat; this will enable increased understanding and manipulation of these pathways for agricultural improvement.

A stable anthraquinone-derivative cathode to develop sodium metal batteries: The role of ammoniates as electrolytes

Recha.geable sodium metal batteries constitute a cost-effective option for energy storage although sodium shows some drawbacks in terms of reactivity with organic solvents and dendritic *** we demonstrate that an organic dye,indanthrone blue,behaves as an efficient cathode material for the development of secondary sodium metal batteries when combined with novel inorganic *** electrolytes are ammonia solvates,known as liquid ammoniates,which can be formulated as NaI·3.3NH_(3) and NaBF_(4)·2.5NH_(3).They impart excellent stability to sodium metal,and they favor sodium non-dendritic growth linked to their exceedingly high sodium ion *** advantage is complemented by a high specific *** battery described here can last hundreds of cycles at 10 C while keeping a Coulombic efficiency of 99%from the first *** of the high capacity of the cathode and the superior physicochemical properties of the electrolytes,the battery can reach a specific energy value as high as 210 W h kgIB^(-1),and a high specific power of 2.2 kW kgIB^(-1),even at below room temperature(4℃).Importantly,the battery is based on abundant and cost-effective materials,bearing promise for its application in la.ge-scale energy storage.
