In isolated chick retina, the visualization of electrochemical self-organized patterns is possible due to the presence of macroscopic intrinsic optical signals (IOSs). Isolated circular waves, standing patterns, and self-sustained sequences of spirals are all easily obtained using an IOS approach. In this paper we present the tight coupling and non-linear relationship between optical and electrical wave concomitants, and potassium-induced whole tissue excitability changes. Elementary statistical methods and time series analyses were applied to two sets of data: 1) solitary circular retinal spreading depression waves, and 2) tissue response to exogenous potassium fast pulses. The results were interpreted from the point of view of non-linear thermodynamical concepts and volume phase transitions in polyanionic gels according to the Tasaki action potential model. From these and previous results, it is clear that the glial network and extracellular matrix contribute to the propagation and emergence of these patterns.

Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Effects of Capybara Oil on Cardiac Remodeling of C57bl/6 Mice

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, and obesity and the metabolic syndrome are risk factors for its development. One of the therapies to reduce cardiovascular risk is the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In Brazil, a source of such acid is the oil extracted from the fat of the capybara. The objective of this work is to study the effects of the capybara oil on lipid and glucose metabolism, as well as its effects on the adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling. We assessed the effects of capybara oil treatment on body mass, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, systolic blood pressure, adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling, and performed an ultrastructural evaluation of the myocardium in C57Bl/6 mice treated with high-fat diet. Treatment with capybara oil reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, and adipocyte diameter. In addition, cardiac remodeling was attenuated, preserving cardiomyocytes, increasing vascularization, reducing cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and the extracellular matrix, and preserving the morphological integrity of mitochondria. Capybara oil has several beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic system, and further studies are needed to better understand its role in the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that often causes serious damage to tooth-supporting *** limited successful outcomes of clinically available approaches underscore the need for therapeutics that cannot only provide structural guidance to cells but can also modulate the local immune ***,three-dimensional melt electrowritten(i.e.,poly(ε-caprolactone))scaffolds with tissue-specific attributes were engineered to guide differentiation of human-derived periodontal ligament stem cells(hPDLSCs)and mediate macrophage *** investigated tissue-specific scaffold attributes comprised fiber morphology(aligned ***)and highly-ordered architectures with distinct strand spacings(small 250μm and large 500μm).Macrophages exhibited an elongated morphology in aligned and highly-ordered scaffolds,while maintaining their round-shape on randomly-oriented fibrous *** of periostin and IL-10 were more pronounced on the aligned and highly-ordered *** hPDLSCs on the scaffolds with 500μm strand spacing show higher expression of osteogenic marker(Runx2)over 21 days,cells on randomly-oriented fibrous scaffolds showed upregulation of M1 *** an orthotopic mandibular fenestration defect model,findings revealed that the tissue-specific scaffolds(i.e.,aligned fibers for periodontal ligament and highly-ordered 500μm strand spacing fluorinated calcium phosphate[F/CaP]-coated fibers for bone)could enhance the mimicking of regeneration of natural periodontal tissues.

Purpose: The main objectives of this study were to characterize and compare the urothelial stem cells (healthy and cancer cells) and TLRs features in the urinary bladder of men without lesionsand with non-muscle-invasive and muscle invasive urothelial tumors. Materials and Methods: Thirty samples of the urinary bladder of 50 to 80-year-old men, with and without diagnosis of malignant urothelial lesions were used. The 30 samples were divided into 3 groups (n = 10 per group): Normal Group;Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Group;Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Group. The samples were histopathologically and immunohistochemically analyzed. The study was conducted at teaching Hospital of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Results: The CD44 and CD133 immunoreactivities were significantly intense in the muscle-invasive cancer group when compared to the other groups. The ABCG2 biomarker demonstrated intense immunoreactivities in both non-muscle and muscle invasive groups, and absent immunoreactivity in the normal group. All groups showed weak CD117 immunoreactivity. Putative Healthy Stem Cells (CD44/CD133/ CD117+) occurred in all groups. Putative Cancer Stem Cells (CD44/CD133/ABCG2+) only occurred in the non-muscle and muscle invasive cancer groups. TLR2 immunoreactivity was significantly lower in the non-muscle invasive cancer group and absent in the muscle invasive cancer group. TLR4 immunoreactivity was significantly lower in both cancer groups. Conclusions: This study leads us to the conclusion that putative cancer stem cell occurrence was sensitive to the decreased in TLR2 and TLR4 immunoreactivities. Also, TLR2 and TLR4 demonstrated their involvement in the regulation of the different biomarkers for putative healthy and cancer urothelial stem cells, probably acting as negative regulators of urothelial carcinogenesis. The understanding of ozonation in bubble columns is the first step to describe this process for organic and inorganic pollutants in water medium in this *** paper developed mathematical models for decomposition of ozone in liquid phase,with analytical solution for zero,first and second-orders kinetics for different pH values,with and without gaseous phase mass transfer effect in the ozone transfer to the liquid *** results models are satisfactory when compared with experimental data,and indicate the importance to consider such effects.

Floors subjected to mechanical equipment loads frequently present problems associated with excessive vibration which can cause human discomfort or even reduce the structure service *** this context,this work aims to develop an analysis methodology in order to assess the fatigue performance of steel-concrete composite floors,when subjected to vibrations induced by mechanical *** studied structural model corresponds to a steel-concrete composite floor spanning 10 m by 10 m,with a total area of 100 m^(2).The numerical model developed for the dynamic analysis adopted the usual mesh refinement techniques present in finite element method(FEM)simulations implemented in the ANSYS *** investigated floor dynamic response was calculated through the consideration of the dynamic loadings imposed by the mechanical equipment,simulated based on the use of harmonic forces applied on the concrete ***,the dynamic structural response was performed considering several scenarios for the positioning of the equipment,in order to verify the occurrence of excessive *** fatigue assessment is based on a linear cumulative damage rule through the use of the Rainflow-counting algorithm and S-N curves from traditional design *** results of this investigation indicated that the equipment position affects directly the floor dynamic structural response and also significantly influences the structure service life.
