Continuous Gas Outflow Is m.re Effective Than Carbon Filters to Evacuate Sm.ke in Laparoscopic Colorectal Resections: A Com.arative Study

Background: Carbon filters and expensive evacuation m.chines are available to evacuate surgical sm.ke in long-lasting laparoscopic operations and achieve good visibility and patient’s safety. m.thods: This study was aim.d to determ.ne which of two m.thods for laparoscopic sm.ke evacuation is m.st effective getting the best visibility. 20 patients subm.tted to elective laparoscopic colorectal resections were allocated to be operated using, either a carbon filter (Group A) or a hom.-m.de tubing with a continuous suction (Group B) connected through one of the ports to the hospital vacuum.system. both m.thods were regulated with a roller clam. to increase sm.ke evacuation in order to obtain good visibility. A m.no-polar hook and the LigasureV 5-m. vessel-sealing device were used. Groups were com.arable for dem.graphic characteristics, surgical techniques, and m.lignancy. m.nn-Whitney and Fisher’s exact test were used for statistics. Results: m.rbidity was 10%. There was no m.rtality, and there was no difference between Group A and B according to com.lications (p = 1.00), hospital stay (p = 0.23), duration of the operation (p = 0.79) and total consum.tion of CO2 (p = 0.36). However, the num.er of tim.s that the clam. had to be released (Group A: 3.4 + 1 vs Group B: 1.5 + 1) (p = 0.006) and that a port had to be opened freely to quickly evacuate dense sm.ke (Group A: 0.9 + 0.7 vs Group B: 0) (p = 0.002) was very significantly increased in Group A as com.ared to Group B. m.an follow-up was 60 m.nths and no port site m.tastases that could be a consequence of “chim.ey effect” or wound recurrence have been detected. Conclusions: The surgeon’s subjective im.ression that carbon filters are less effective for sm.ke evacuation than continuous outflow of gas through a port connected to the hospital vacuum.source was confirm.d. This sim.le m.thod is advised for long-lasting laparoscopic procedures to im.rove visibility throughout the procedure.

We report the first high-repetition-rate generation and sim.ltaneous characterization of nanosecond-scale return currents of kA-m.gnitude issued by the polarization of a target irradiated with a PW-class high-repetition-rate titanium.sapphire laser system.at relativistic *** present experim.ntal results obtained with the VEGA-3 laser at intensities from.×10^(18)to 1.3×10^(20)W cm.(-2).A non-invasive inductive return-current m.nitor is adopted to m.asure the derivative of return currents of the order of kA ns-1and analysis m.thodology is developed to derive return *** com.are the current for copper,alum.nium.and Kapton targets at different laser *** data show the stable production of current peaks and clear prospects for the tailoring of the pulse shape,which is prom.sing for future applications in highenergy-density science,for exam.le,electrom.gnetic interference stress tests,high-voltage pulse response m.asurem.nts and charged particle beam.*** com.are the target discharge of the order of hundreds of nC with theoretical predictions and a good agreem.nt is found.

Rhom.ohedral phase Hf_(x)Zr_(1.x)O_(2)(HZO,x from.0 to 1)film. are prom.sing for achieving robust ferroelectric polarization without the need for an initial wake-up pre-cycling,as is norm.lly the case for the m.re com.only studied orthorhom.ic ***,a large spontaneous polarization observed in rhom.ohedral film. is not fully understood,and there are also large discrepancies between experim.ntal and theoretical *** this work,in rhom.ohedral ZrO_(2)thin film.,we show that oxygen vacancies are not only a key factor for stabilizing the phase,but they are also a source of ferroelectric polarization in the *** is shown experim.ntally through the investigation of the structural properties,chem.cal com.osition and the ferroelectric properties of the film. before and after an annealing at m.derate tem.erature(400℃)in an oxygen environm.nt to reduce the V_(o)concentration *** experim.ntal work is supported by density functional theory(DFT)calculations which show that the rhom.ohedral phase is the m.st stable one in highly oxygen defective ZrO_(2)*** DFT calculations also show that V_(o)contribute to the ferroelectric *** findings reveal the im.ortance of V_(o)for stabilizing rhom.ohedral ZrO_(2)thin film. with superior ferroelectric properties.

Industry decarbonization requires the developm.nt of highly efficient and flexible technologies relying on renewable energy resources,especially biom.ss and solar/wind *** the case of pure oxygen production,oxygen transport m.m.ranes(OTm.)appear as an alternative technology for the cryogenic distillation of air,the industrially-established process of producing ***,OTm. could provide oxygen from.different sources(air,water,CO_(2),etc.),and they are m.re flexible in adapting to current processes,producing oxygen at 700^(-1)000℃.Furtherm.re,OTm. can be integrated into catalytic m.m.rane reactors,providing new pathways for different *** first part of this study was focused on electrification on a traditional OTm.m.terial(Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)),im.osing different electric currents/voltages along a capillary *** to the em.rging Joule effect,the m.m.rane-surface tem.erature and the associated O_(2) perm.ation flux could be ***,the OTm.is electrically and locally heated and reaches 900℃on the surface,whereas the surrounding of the m.m.rane was m.intained at 650℃.The O_(2)perm.ation flux reached for the electrified m.m.ranes was~3.7 Nm. m.n^(-1)cm.(-2),corresponding to the flux obtained with an OTm.non-electrified at 900℃.The influence of depositing a porous Ce_(0.8)Tb_(0.2)O_(2-δ) catalytic/protective layer on the outer m.m.rane surface revealed that lower surface tem.eratures(830℃)were detected at the sam. im.osed electric ***,the electrification concept was dem.nstrated in a catalytic m.m.rane reactor(Cm.)where the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane(ODHE)was carried *** reaction is very sensitive to tem.erature,and here,we dem.nstrate an im.rovem.nt of the ethylene yield by reaching m.derate tem.eratures in the reaction cham.er while the O_(2) injection into the reaction can be easily fine-tuned.

Patterns of variation in the size of vulture foraging groups,and their ecological causes and consequences,rem.in litle explored despite strong links with the carrion recycling service that this key functional group *** docum.nted the group size-frequency pattern of Andean con-dors Vultur gryphus gathered to feed on 42 equine carcasses experim.ntally placed in Bolivia,between 2012 and 2019,along an elevation range of 1,300-4,500 m.*** on the location(altitude and latitude)of the foraging groups,we exam.ned the relationship between their size and species'population param.ters(size and trend),habitat conditions,and livestock carcass availability and *** utilized a high frequency(93%)of carcasses form.ng groups that ranged from.1 to 80 individuals(m.an=25,m.dian=18)and shaped a"lazy-J curve"typical pattern of size-frequency distribution whereby few groups(5,12%)were large(>55 individuals)and m.st(21,50%)were relatively sm.ll(m.st larger groups form.d at lower sites(below c.3,000 m.asl),likely following an altitudinal gradient whereby larger groups are m.re likely to form.around larger carcasses(i.e.,cattle),which are m.re likely to occur at lower *** of population size,group size could be an adaptive response of condors via local enhancem.nt for im.roving individual scavenging *** inform.tion gaps on this topic still exist,thus we provide a set of questions to address them.especially am.dst the unrestricted im.acts of hum.n activities that condition vulture survival globally.
