Clinical scenarios for the use of S100β as a marker of hepatic encephalopathy

AIM: To evaluate the association between serum concentrations of S100β in patients with cirrhosis and the presence of low grade hepatic encephalopathy (HE).METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. The population was categorized into four groups healthy subjects, cirrhosis without HE, cirrhosis with covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE) and cirrhosis with overt HE. Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney’s U with Bonferroni adjustment Spearman correlations and area under the ROC were used as ***: A total of 61 subjects were included, 46 cirrhotic patients and 15 healthy volunteers. S100β values were different among all groups, and differences remained significant between groups 1 and 2 (P ometric hepatic encephalopathy score in patients with cirrhosis without HE compared to the patients with cirrhosis with CHE (r = -0.413, P = 0.019). ROC curve analysis yielded > 0.13 ng/mL as the best cutoff value of S100β for the diagnosis of HE (sensitivity 83.3%, specificity 63.6%).CONCLUSION: Serum concentrations of S100β are higher in patients with cirrhosis than in healthy volunteers, and are further increased in the presence of hepatic encephalopathy. The results suggest that serum biomarkers such as S100β could help in the correct characterization of incipient stages of HE.

Intussusception is a rare condition in the adult ***,in contrast to its presentation in children,an identifiable etiology is found in the majority of *** manifestations of adult intussusception are non-specific and patients may present with acute,intermittent or chronic symptoms,predominantly those of intestinal obstruction.A 27-year-old male patient with recurrent abdominal pain secondary to intussusception is herein *** clinical presentation and ultrasonographic findings led to the *** laparotomy,an ileal hamartoma was found as the lead point of the *** management and histopathologic studies are described.A recurrent intestinal obstruction and classic ultrasound findings may lead to the diagnosis of intussusception but surgical exploration remains *** principle of resection without reduction is well established.

Study of the mechanisms regulating human umbilical artery contractility

We studied the involvement of different types of Ca2+ channels, cyclic nucleotides and different kinases in the regulation of human umbilical artery (HUA) contractility. The elucidation of the precise mechanisms regulating the contractility of this artery could be very important to reveal potential therapeutic targets to treat HUA disorders such as preeclampsia. The relevancy of different types of Ca2+ channels on the regulation of HUA tonus was analyzed. Among the different Ca2+ channel inhibitors used, only the L-type calcium channels (LTCC) inhibition induced relaxation of HUA in Ca2+ containing medium. The inhibition of T-type calcium channels (TTCC) or TRP channels did not significantly affect HUA contractility. In presence of Ca2+, the intracellular increase of a cyclic nucleotide (cAMP or cGMP) induces relaxation of HUA, which was almost complete in histamine-con- tracted HUA, and lower effect was observed in arteries contracted by KCl and serotonin (5-HT). Inhibition of PKA and PKG weakly reduced the relaxations induced by the increase of cAMP and cGMP respectively, suggesting that the relaxation induced by these nucleotides is not totally mediated by the activation of their respective kinases and that other mechanisms are involved. In calcium containing solution, PP2A inhibition produces relaxation of contracted HUA. In KCl contracted arteries, the OA and nifedipine relaxant effects are similar and not additive, suggesting that PP2A could activate LTCC. Besides, the increase of cyclic nucleotides significantly increased the OA effect, suggesting that the effect of PP2A inhibition is independent of the cyclic nucleotide pathways. The contractions induced by KCl, histamine and 5-HT in presence of Ca2+ were not significantly affected by ROCK, ERK1/2 or p38MAPK inhibitors. How Does Arise the Force on a Dielectric Slab in a Parallel Plate Capacitor?

We address the problem of the force exerted on a dielectric slab partially introduced into a charged parallel plate capacitor. This elementary problem is usually solved calculating this force as the gradient of an energy and attributing its origin to the action of the fringing field outside the capacitor on the dipoles of the dielectric slab. By applying Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetic stresses, we show that this force acts at the interface dielectric-vacuum and originates from the action of these stresses. This approach permits to obtain the force as a volume integration of a force density, or as a surface integral of a stress tensor. This force density and the stress tensor are part of a momentum balance equation derived from Maxwell’s equations.

Balance Equations of Electromagnetic Angular Momentum

We give theoretical foundation to torque densities proposed in the past, like the one used by Beth to study experimentally the action of circularly polarized radiation on a birefringent material, or that proposed by Mansuripur to resolve a seeming paradox concerning the Lorentz force law and relativity. Our results provide new insights into electromagnetic theory, since they provide a unified and general treatment of the balance of lineal and angular momentum that permits a better assessment of some torques. Thus in this work we extend the derivations we have made of balance equations for electromagnetic linear momentum to balance equations for electromagnetic angular momentum. These balance equations are derived from the macroscopic Maxwell equations by means of vector and tensor identities and from the different ways in which these equations are written in terms of fields E, D, B, and H, as well as polarizations P, and M. Therefore these balance equations are as sound as the macroscopic Maxwell equations, with the limitations of the constitutive relations.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of Beauveria bassiana(Bb 1205)on controlling Fusarium oxysporum ***(Fol 17108)in tomato plants in greenhouse *** of Bb 1205 was the most promising among the agronomic variables and expression of the activity of the enzymesβ-1,3-glucanases and *** of Bb 1205 occurred at a concentration of 1×108 conidia·mL−1,which was administered onto the leaves,directly into the soil and via *** with Fol 17108 occurred with 1×106 spores·mL−1,which were added directly to the *** was used for measuring agronomic parameters,namely activity of chitinases andβ-1,3-glucanases in foliage and *** Bb 1205 was added to the soil,the chlorophyll index and aerial part length showed significant *** addition,it was determined that root length,fresh weight of foliage,flower,and fruit count increased 82 days after inoculation(dai).Chitinase activity induced by Bb 1205 in leaves and roots of tomato plants infected with Fol 17108 was observed when injected into the stem at 32 dai(41.8 and 11.6-fold,respectively).Inoculation on the foliage showed a 10-fold increase ofβ-1,3-glucanases in the roots after 82 *** for leaves,a 3.8-fold increase was found when the stem was *** the different in vivo applications,Bb 1205 activated its defenses by expressing the chitinase enzymes andβ-1,3-glucanase,thus reducing the damage caused by Fol 17108,demonstrating increase plant growth thereafter.

Effects of organic chromium supplementation to finishing lambs diet on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality

The objective of this study was to evaluate supplemental organic chromium（Cr） to finishing lambs on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality. Eighteen Suffolk lambs（age（4.5±0.2） mon;（25.8±3.6） kg body weight（BW）） were randomly assigned to three levels of supplemental organic Cr（0.0, 0.2 and 0.4 mg kg^–1 dry matter（DM）） in a complete random design. Growth performance was evaluated for 70 d, and then lambs were slaughtered to study carcass characteristics and chemical composition of meat. Orthogonal contrasts were performed（contrast one-average level 0.2 ppm Cr vs. average level 0.4 ppm Cr; contrast two-level 0 vs. average levels（0.2＋0.4） ppm Cr）. Orthogonal polynomials were used to estimate the linear and quadratic effects of Cr concentrations. Growth and carcass performance were not affected by supplemental organic Cr. Muscle conformation and leg perimeter linearly increased（P〈0.05） as organic Cr level increased in the diet. Kidney fat decreased linearly（P〈0.05） as supplemental Cr increased. In Longissimus dorsi（LD）, the ash content decreased linearly, and shear force（kg cm^–2） increased（P〈0.05） as organic Cr level increased in the diet. It is concluded that organic Cr did not affect growth performance, but it improved positively the muscle conformation, reduced kidney fat, whereas in LD there was an increment in shear force in finishing carcass lambs.

A New Perspective of the Force on a Magnetizable Rod inside a Solenoid

We analyze the familiar effect of the pulling of a magnetizable rod by a magnetic field inside a solenoid. We find that the analogy with the pulling of a dielectric slab by a charged capacitor is not as direct as usually thought. Indeed, there are two possibilities to pursue the analogy, according to the correspondence used,?either E → B and D → H, or E?→ H and D?→ B. One of these results in an incorrect sign in the force, while the other gives the correct result. We avoid this ambiguity in the usual energy method applying a momentum balance equation derived from Maxwell’s equations. This method permits the calculation of the force with a volume integration of a force density, or with a surface integration of a stress tensor. An interpretation of our results establishes that the force acts at the interface and has its origin in Maxwell′s magnetic stresses at the medium-vacuum interface. This approach provides new insights and a new perspective of the origin of this force.

With the insight provided by a balance equation of electromagnetic momentum, we compare the force on a dielectric slab inside a capacitor with the force on a magnetizable rod inside a solenoid. We conclude that these forces are not exactly analogous, as usually thought. We present a device that is a proper analogy of the case of a dielectric slab inside a capacitor. Our analysis shows the significance of the electrostatic and magnetostatic pressures to the understanding of these effects and shows the conceptual differences between both cases.

Induced Dipoles in Electromagnetic Media in Motion

We present a non-relativistic approach to the equivalent polarization Peq=(1/c2)v×Meq, that appears in a magnetized medium in motion. We apply an analogous method to that used by Panofsky and Phillips to calculate the symmetric effect, the equivalent magnetization that appears in a polarized dielectric in motion, Meq=P×v,?This method is based on a particular expression of Maxwell’s equations and the application of the convective derivative. These authors argue, however, that the equivalent polarization can be obtained only with a relativistic approach. We show that with the same method, but with a different and equivalent expression of Maxwell’s equations, this effect can also be calculated. In this way both effects can be considered relativistic effects to first order in v/c.
