Protective effect of some vitamins against the toxic action of ethanol on liver regeneration induced by partial hepatectomy in rats

AIM: To investigate the effects of vitamins (A, C and E) on liver injury induced by ethanol administration during liver regeneration in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats subjected to 70% partial hepatectomy were divided into five groups (groups 1-5). During the experiment, animals of Group 1 drank only water. The other four groups (2-5) drank 30 mL of ethanol/L of water. Group 3 additionally received vitamin A, those of group 4 vitamin C and those of group 5 received vitamin E. Subsequently serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin and bilirubin were measured colorimetrically. Lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances, TBARS) both in plasma and liver was measured, as well as liver mass gain assessment and total DNA. RESULTS: Compared with sham group, serum AST and ALT increased significantly under ethanol treatment (43% and 93%, respectively, with P < 0.05). Vitamin C and vitamin E treatment attenuated the ethanol-induced increases in ALT and AST activity. Ethanol treatment also decreased serum albumin concentration compared to sham group (3.1 ± 0.4 g/dL vs 4.5 ± 0.2 g/dL; P < 0.05). During liver regeneration vitamins C and E significantly ameliorated liver injury for ethanol administration in hepatic lipid peroxidation (4.92 nmol/mg and 4.25 nmol/mg vs 14.78 nmol/mg, respectively, with P < 0.05). In association with hepatic injury, ethanol administration caused a significant increase in both hepatic and plasma lipid peroxidation. Vitamins (C and E) treatment attenuated hepatic and plasma lipid peroxidation. CONCLUSION: Vitamins C and E protect against liver injury and dysfunction, attenuate lipid peroxidation, and thus appear to be significantly more effective than vitamin A against ethanol-mediated toxic effects during liver regeneration.

Propagation and Confinement of Electric Field Waves along One-Dimensional Porous Silicon Hybrid Periodic/Quasiperiodic Structure

Selective spatial confinement of the electric field intensity is theoretically obtained for the light propagation along hybrid structures conformed by periodic and Fibonacci quasiperiodic dielectric multilayers. Sandwich-like configurations featuring periodic-quasiperiodic-periodic as well as quasiperiodic-periodic-quasiperiodic designs exhibit spatial localization of a large percent of the optical signal within specific zones of the hybrid system. Such a feature might be of interest in the pursuing of lasing devices based on porous silicon. It is found that the electric field confinement does not only depend on the quality of the defect or a particular transmission mode observed in the reflectivity spectra. We show that it is possible to enhance the electric field confinement solely varying the angle of incidence. The possibility of realizing finite photonic crystals with reduced size and very well defined band gap by means of a quasiperiodic-periodic-quasiperiodic hybrid multilayer is also revealed.

Socio-Economic Metabolism and Sustainability at a Watershed

This research relates to the change in land use and land cover and to socio-economic metabolism, which constitute two approaches to interdisciplinary research on the society-nature relationship. The study focuses on relationships between the spatial pattern of land use, as exhibited through changes in Human Appropriation of Net Primary Productivity percentage (HANPP%), and socio- economic indicators (such as social exclusion/inclusion, income autonomy, human development, social equity and quality of life) of census sectors of a watershed. The analysis seeks to identify the existence of ecological and economic conflicts as a means of diagnosing the sustainability condition of the mid-upper Mogi Guaçu River watershed in 2009. The spatial pattern of land use of the watershed in 2009 indicates that ecosystems and natural habitats had already been reduced to a fraction of their original sizes and that a significant portion of their primary productivity had been appropriated. The predominance of anthropogenic agricultural activities in the watershed was the main cause of the increase in the HANPP%. Lower HANPP% values are associated with census sectors in regions with legally protected conservation areas;higher values are associated with census sectors involved in anthropogenic agricultural and non-agricultural activities. A positive significant correlation was observed between HANPP% and social exclusion/inclusion, income autonomy and human development indicators, with values above the Basic Social Inclusion Standard, indicating lower trophic availability. With the exception of the quality of life indicator, lower (0.75 to 0.25) and higher (-0.75 to -0.25) social exclusion values were observed in rural and urban census sectors. The environmental sustainability of the middle Mogi Guaçu River watershed has been compromised in terms of the amount of biomass available to the trophic community. Land Use Change Trajectories for Wetland Management (Mogi-Guaçu Floodplan River, Southern Brazil)

Natural and anthropogenic factors are responsible for changes in wetland function and structure. This research deals with the complexity of interactions among flood attributes, climatic data and land use trajectories to track the impact of land use changes for wetland management, over 30 years (1984- 2014). This paper presents a multi-temporal analysis of a floodplain to know the inter-annual ecohydrological variability, including extraordinary events of floods and droughts, using indicators of hydrological regime. It also presents a quantitative description of the geospatial variability in the Mogi Guaçu wetland components to assess the changes in the conversion, replacement, of wetland landscapes by anthropic growth activities. Flood attributes and anthropogenic pressures have altered temporal habitat variability in changes on the river course, in sandbars extent, and oxbow lake genesis and extinction, with a decline in the biota dependent on these habitats. These results have significant implications of the quick expansion of anthropogenic activities and provide key information about the impact of land use changes on the wetland function and structure. It is an objective tool to help the environmental management of wetland areas.

Pelvic exenterations for primary rectal cancer:Analysis from a 10-year national prospective database

AIM To identify short-term and oncologic outcomes of pelvic exenterations(PE) for locally advanced primary rectal cancer(LAPRC) in patients included in a national prospective *** Few studies report on PE in patients with LAPRC. For this study, we included PE for LAPRC performed between 2006 and 2017, as available, from the Rectal Cancer Registry of the Spanish Association of Surgeons [Asociación Espa?ola de Cirujanos(AEC)]. Primary endpoints included procedure-associated complications, 5-year local recurrence(LR), disease-free survival(DFS) and overall survival(OS). A propensitymatched comparison with patients who underwent non-exenterative surgery for low rectal cancers was performed as a secondary *** Eight-two patients were included. The mean age was 61.8 ± 11.5 years. More than half of the patients experienced at least one complication. Surgical site infections were the most common complication(abdominal wound 18.3%, perineal closure 19.4%). Thirty-three multivisceral resections were performed, including two hepatectomies and four metastasectomies. The long-term outcomes of the 64 patients operated on before 2013 were assessed. The five-year LR was 15.6%, the distant recurrence rate was 21.9%, and OS was 67.2%, with a mean survival of 43.8 mo. R+ve resection increased LR [hazard ratio(HR) = 5.58, 95%CI: 1.04-30.07, P = 0.04]. The quality of the mesorectum was associated with DFS. Perioperative complications were independent predictors of shorter survival(HR = 3.53, 95%CI: 1.12-10.94, P = 0.03). In the propensity-matched analysis, PE was associated with better quality of the specimen and tended to achieve lower LR with similar *** PE is an extensive procedure, justified if disease-free margins can be obtained. Further studies should define indications, accreditation policy, and quality of life in LAPRC.

Improvement of nutritional and organoleptic quality of fruits is a key goal in current strawberry breeding *** ratio of sugars to acids is a determinant factor contributing to fruit liking,although different sugars and acids contribute in varying degrees to this complex trait.A segregating F1 population of 95 individuals,previously characterized for several fruit quality characters,was used to map during 2 years quantitative trait loci(QTL)for 50 primary metabolites,L-ascorbic acid(L-AA)and other related traits such as soluble solid content(SSC),titratable acidity(TA),and pH.A total of 133 mQTL were detected above the established thresholds for 44 *** 12.9%of QTL were detected in the 2 years,suggesting a large environmental influence on primary metabolite *** objective of this study was the identification of key metabolites that were associated to the overall variation in SSC and *** it was observed in previous studies,a number of QTL controlling several metabolites and traits were co-located in homoeology group V(HG V).mQTL controlling a large variance in raffinose,sucrose,succinic acid,and L-AA were detected in approximate the same chromosomal regions of different homoeologous linkage groups belonging to HG *** genes for selected mQTL are proposed based on their co-localization,on the predicted function,and their differential gene expression among contrasting F1 progeny ***-seq analysis from progeny lines contrasting in L-AA content detected 826 differentially expressed genes and identified Mannose-6-phosphate isomerase,FaM6PI1,as a candidate gene contributing to natural variation in ascorbic acid in strawberry fruit.

Several aquifers located in North-Central Mexico have natural arsenic(As)concentrations higher than those allowed by national and international regulations;these aquifers are usually located in fractured volcanic environments that interact with sedimentary basins and have a carbonate *** this study,an evaluation of As in volcanic and sedimentary rocks collected at 13 sampling sites along the Sierra de Codornices(Guanajuato State,Central Mexico)was carried *** geologic materials are representative of the dominant hydrogeologic *** As content is disseminated in volcanic rocks and the highest contents were obtained in felsic rocks;this information served to identify the hydrogeochemical processes related to the mobilization and transport of arsenic in the *** mobilization of As is a product of the dissolution of volcanic glass,a process involved in the alkaline desorption that occurs on As-containing mineral surfaces and possibly by the dissolution/desorption of Fe minerals and some clays,all these processes may be accelerated by the geothermal characteristics of the groundwater in the study area.

Enhancement of the benthic communities around an isolated island in the Antarctic Ocean

Insular marine biotas are often richer in faunal diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical region. The existence of particular island effects were tested under polar conditions by compar- ing infaunal benthic assemblages on Peter I Island with those of similar latitudes in the open ocean at the Bellingshausen Sea and also from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sampling was carried out aboard the R/V Hesperides during the expedition named BENTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic samples were collected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an USNEL-type box corer （BC） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in polychaete abundance were detected between the stations located in the open sea and the remaining sites （island plus mainland sites）. Bivalve abundances were also distinct between island and mainland sampling sites. Sediment columns taken from the island seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model that islands develop distinct assemblages characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in cold waters. Several abiotic factors were measured simultaneously at the seafloor and along the water column to investigate faunal distribution patterns. Significant correlations were found between the benthic assemblages and a combination of two environmental variables：＂island effect＂（measured as a categorical variable） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more complex benthic assemblages were found in Peter I Island＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Studies on litterfall and decomposition provide estimations of decomposition rates of different *** is key information to understanding ecosystem dynamics and changes in a scenario of global *** objective of this research was to assess litterfall production,the potential deposition of macro and micronutrients through leaf and twig fall as well as macronutrient—use efficiency in three forest ecosystems at different altitudes： a pine forest mixed with deciduous species（S1）; a Quercus ***（S2）; and,a Tamaulipan thornscrub forest（S3）.Total annual litterfall deposition was 594,742 and 533 g m^（-2） for S1,S2 and *** litter was higher （68%） than twigs（18%）,reproductive structures（8%） or miscellaneous material（6%）.Micronutrient leaf deposition was higher for Fe followed by Mn,Zn and *** leaf deposition was higher for Ca followed by K,Mg and *** though P deposition in leaves and twigs was lower than other macronutrients,its nutrient use efficiency was higher than Ca,Mg or *** and species composition determine litter and nutrient deposition,with higher values at mid-altitudes（550 m）.Altitude is an important factor to consider when analyzing litter production as well as nutrient deposition as shown in this *** production and nutrient deposition are expected to change in a scenario of global warming.
