Antimicrobial potential of quinoa seeds from six diverse seeds, grown in three distinctive geo-graphical zones of Chile, was correlated with their total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total saponin content (TSC). The six seeds were Ancovinto, Cancosa, Cahuil, Faro, Regalona and Villarrica. A significant influence of quinoa source on chemical composition of seeds was observed. Extracts of all quinoa samples showed antimicrobial activity in the range of 8.3 - 14.8 mm inhibition zone for E. coli and 8.5 - 15.0 mm inhibition zone for S. aureus. Cancosa seeds had the highest antimicrobial action. The TPC and TFC ranged from 3.71 to 16.55 mg GA/100 g d.m. and 7.77 to 14.37 mg QE/100 g d.m., respectively. TSC varied from 1.78 to 3.08 g/100 g d.m. A cor-relation between TFC and antimicrobial activity was found. In conclusion, the six types of quinoa seeds were identified as potential sources of antioxidant compounds and antimicrobial activity.

Objective:To describe the microbiological characteristics in emphysematous pyelonephritis(EPN),demonstrate the frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase(ESBL)microorganisms,and determine if these microorganisms are associated with the prognosis of patients with EPN.Methods:We conducted a retrospective study in patients with a diagnosis of EPN in a tertiary care hospital of the northeast region of Mexico during the period from January 2011 to January 2016.Clinical variables were analyzed to determine association with the presence of ESBL-producing microorganisms.Statistical significance was set with p<0.05.Results:A total of 63 patients were included;55(87.3%)of them were females,with a median age of 55(interquartile range:45-65)years.Conservative management was indicated in 38.1%;42.9%were treated with ureteral stent;12.7%with open or percutaneous drainage;15.8%with early nephrectomy;and 9.5%with delayed nephrectomy.Reported mortality was 13(20.6%)cases;23(36.5%)cases required admission to the intensive care unit.The most frequent microorganism isolated was Escherichia coli(n=34,53.9%).ESBL microorganisms were found in 31.7%of the population.No significant association of ESBL was found with admission to the intensive care unit,or with increased mortality.Conclusions:To our knowledge,this is the first study that evaluates ESBL microorganisms as a prognostic factor in EPN.Risk factors associated with a poor prognosis in patients with EPN have been described.The microbiological factors,specifically ESBL-producing bacteria,do not seem to influence in the prognosis of these patients.

According to World Health Organization(WHO)estimates,in 2020,there were 1.8 million human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected children below 15 years old living with HIV and 150,000 children who acquired the infection[1].Every year,110,000 children die as a consequence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related causes[2].As in adults,optimal management of infected children depends on early diagnosis and treatment with antiretroviral drugs based on their viral genotype.

AIM: To explore methylation of DAPK, THBS1, CDH-1, and p14 genes, and Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) status in individuals harboring esophageal columnar metaplasia.METHODS: Distal esophageal mucosal samples obtained by endoscopy and histologically diagnosed as gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia, were studied thoroughly. DNA was extracted from paraffin blocks, and methylation status of deathassociated protein kinase(DAPK), thrombospondin-1(THBS1), cadherin-1(CDH1), and p14 genes, was examined using a methyl-sensitive polymerase chain reaction(MS-PCR) and sodium bisulfite modification protocol. H. pylori cag A status was determined by PCR.RESULTS: In total, 68 subjects(33 females and 35 males), with a mean age of 52 years, were included. H. pylori cag A positive was present in the esophageal gastric-type metaplastic mucosa of 18 individuals. DAPK, THSB1, CDH1, and p14 gene promoters were methylated by MS-PCR in 40(58.8%), 33(48.5%), 46(67.6%), and 23(33.8%) cases of the 68 esophageal samples. H. pyloristatus was associated with methylation of DAPK(P = 0.003) and THBS1(P = 0.019).CONCLUSION: DNA methylation occurs in cases of gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia of the esophagus, and this modification is associated with H. pylori cag A positive infection.

Dear Editor,New World cutaneous leishmaniasis is a vector-borne neglected tropical disease caused by infection with protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania;most of them included in the subgenus Viannia,which are transmitted by the bites of infected female phlebotomine sandflies[1].In Colombia L.panamensis and L.braziliensis are the most frequent species associated with cutaneous leishmaniasis[2].The spectrum of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis includes single or multiple,localized,cutaneous ulcers;diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis;disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis;and mucosal leishmaniasis[3].

The analysis of the systematic transitions in the forested landscape and the study of the forest fragmentation patterns allow us to deepen our understanding of the changes in the vegetation ground cover. The importance of knowing the intricate patterns of the land usage of the upper basin of the Amazon region is widely recognized. This zone is one of the most diverse biological areas in the world, is home to large areas of mature tropical cloud forest and demonstrates high probabilities of stable climatic conditions in light of global warming. The research quan- tiffed systematic transitions through the ＂loss＂ and ＂gain＂ of the different categories of landscape during the eighteen-year study period of the Ecuadorian Amazon Region （EAR）, the forest fragmentation patterns were also analyzed based on a set of indicators. Therefore, with respect to the entirety of the landscape, the results registered for the ground coverage in forested areas during the first period （1990-2000）, show a decrease of 6.99% and an increase of 0.68%; and during the second period （2000-2008）, show a decrease of 3.99% and an increase of 2.14%. It demonstrated that forest and agricultural areas tended to replace or be replaced by herbaceous vegetation faster than expected fortuitously. Finally, the indices of fragmentation signaled intense changes during the 1990-2000 period with a reduction during the period 2000-2008. Per- centages registered in the Largest Patch Index （LPI） were between 79.58%; 52.39% and 49.99% respectively; while the Patch Density （PD） varied between 0.04; 0.06 and 0.07. This suggests the propensity of for- est cover to remain intact. The results of this investigation suggest a tendency towards stability in Ecuador＇s Amazon landscape. Within the framework for development and management of this area, the tendency is natural regeneration. This permits a consolidation of the conservation, reforestation, forestation and agricultural forestry plans, programs and systems for the protected areas in EAR.

Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)is a Gram negative pathogen that selectively colonizes the human gastric epithelium.Over 50%of the world population is infected with H.pylori reaching up to 90%of infected individuals in developing countries.Nonetheless the increased impact upon public health care,its reservoir and the transmission pathway of the species has not been clearly established yet.Molecular studies allowed the detection of H.pylori in various aquatic environments,even forming biofilm in tap water distribution systems in several countries,suggesting a role of water as a possible reservoir of the pathogen.The persistence of human infection with H.pylori and the resistance of clinical isolates to commonly used antibiotics in eradication therapy have been related to the genetic variability of the species and its ability to develop biofilm,demonstrated both in vivo and in vitro experiments.Thus,during the last years,experimental work with this pathogen has been focused in the search for biofilm inhibitors and biofilm destabilizing agents.However,only two anti-H.pylori biofilm disrupting agents have been successfully used:Curcumin-a natural dye-and N-acetyl cysteine-a mucolytic agent used in respiratory diseases.The main goal of this review was to discuss the evidences available in the literature supporting the ability of H.pylori to form biofilm upon various surfaces in aquatic environments,both in vivo and in vitro.The results published and our own observations suggest that the ability of H.pylori to form biofilm may be important for surviving under stress conditions or in the spread of the infection among humans,mainly through natural water sources and water distribution systems.

Because of the growing worldwide demand for maize grain,new alternatives have been sought for breeding of this cereal,e.g.,development of polyembryonic varieties,which agronomic performance could positively impact the grain yield per unit area,and nutritional quality.The objectives of this study were to(1)determine the phytochemicals present in the embryo and endosperm of grain from maize families with high,low,and null polyembryony frequency,which were planted at different locations,and(2)state the relationship between these compounds and seed germination.The extracted phytochemicals from corn were identified by HPLC-MS.The results showed that the genotype with the highest presence of phytochemicals was the brachytic population with high polyembryony called“BAP”,which also required less water during the germination process.The number of phytochemicals in both embryo and endosperm tissues was not related to the sowing location where they came from or the type of polyembryony.The number of different phytochemicals depended on the grain tissue from where they were extracted.The chemical compounds found in the different maize tissues were related to the development of the plant,either in roots or nibs because these are mainly associated with the lignin synthesis.
