Bioluminescence is the ability of organisms to emit their own light which can be self-produced in light organs by photogenic cells(photocytes)or symbiotically by bearing cultures of luminous *** animals are mainly comprised in the ocean,nocturnal coastal shallow-water species or,as the majority of species,inhabiting deep-sea where dim light conditions are optimal for communication by luminous *** to difficult access to species,fisheries of bioluminescent fishes worldwide are rare,mostly for traditional cuisine and fishing *** are the only bioluminescent vertebrates and thus their light organs present an astonishing level of complexity for light modulation to adequate light signals for specific ecological *** control the output of light intensity using different mechanisms which can be categorized as being under control of hormonal or neuronal ***,neural control allows fast and direct response to the photocytes while endocrinal systems allow to control the light produced by bacteria,via manipulation of individual *** some species,mechanical movement of melanophore-filled tissues by muscular action is under neuronal or hormonal *** dimorphism of light organs,driven by hormonal regulation during ontogeny,takes a crucial role in communication and reproductive success of these species.

The authors present the general theory of cleft extensions for a cocommutative weak Hopf algebra H. For a right H-comodule algebra, they obtain a bijective corre- spondence between the isomorphisms classes of H-cleft extensions AH → A, where AH is the subalgebra of coinvariants, and the equivalence classes of crossed systems for H over AH. Finally, they establish a bijection between the set of equivalence classes of crossed systems with a fixed weak H-module algebra structure and the second cohomology group H2φZ（AH）（H, Z（AH））, where Z（AH） is the center of AH.

Immunomodulating effects of antibiotics used in the prophylaxis of bacterial infections in advanced cirrhosis

The use of norfloxacin either as primary or secondary prophylaxis of bacterial infections in advanced cirrhosis has improved patient's survival. This may be explained not only due to a significant decrease in the number of infections, but also because of a direct immunomodulatory effect. Selective intestinal decontamination with norfloxacin reduces translocation of either viable bacteria or bacteria-driven products from the intestinal lumen. In addition, norfloxacin directly modulates the systemic inflammatory response. The proinflammatory cytokine profile secreted by neutrophils from these patients shows a close, significant, and inverse correlation with serum norfloxacin levels. Similar effects have been described with other quinolones in different clinical conditions. Although the underlying mechanisms are not well defined for most of the antibiotics, the pathways triggered for norfloxacin to induce such immunomodulatory effects involve the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and NF-κB and the up-regulation of heme-oxygenase 1 and IL-10 expression. The knowledge of these immunomodulatory effects, additional to their bactericidal role, improves our comprehension of the interaction between antibiotics and the cellular host response and offer new possibilities for the development of new therapeutic strategies to manage and prevent bacterial infections in cirrhosis.

The present study evaluates ground-based downward surface shortwave radiation (Rs) over the coastal region of Alicante (Southeastern Spain).Hourly measurements collected over the eleven-year period 2010-2020 are *** weather stations located over the region capital,Alicante,have been selected as representative of urban and suburban *** additional weather stations far from the city have been selected representing rural *** is significantly reduced over the urban station during the morning hours within the winter season compared to the observations recorded over the suburban and rural stations,with a global mean difference of-81 and-120 W/m^(2)at 10 LT,***,no significant differences are obtained during the midday sun,with a global mean difference of-20 W/m^(2)between the urban and rural *** the aim of explaining these differences,the current paper investigates the relationship between Rsand different air pollutants:NOx,SO_(2),and fine particulate matter (PM_(2.5)and PM_(10)) as well as the wind field measured at the urban and suburban *** results found in this work point towards a close relationship between Rsand NOxconcentrations annual cycles,which are also influenced by the prevailing wind circulations observed over the study area.A global mean NOxconcentration of 107μg/m^(3)is observed over the urban station at 10 LT during the winter *** contrast,these high concentrations are significantly reduced over the suburban station,with global mean value of 40μg/m^(3)at 10 LT,for this period of the year.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cA MP) and/or cyclic guanosine monophosphate(cG MP)have been suggested to play specific roles in processes of memory. These cyclic nucleotides are hydrolyzed by specific enzymes,ie phosphodiesterases(PDEs). Thus,selective PDE inhibitors preventing the breakdown of cAMP and/or cGMP could improve memory. Studies with different timing of treatment with specific PDE inhibitors indicated that distinct underlying signaling pathways for early and late consolidation processes exist corresponding to specific time-windows for memory consolidation into longterm memory. There is evidence that the underlying mechanisms of PDE inhibition on the observed behavioral effects are independent of possible cerebrovascular effects. Most likely the underlying mechanisms are a cGMP/PKG pathway for early consolidation processes and a cAMP/PKA pathway for late consolidation processes. In addition,the early-phase cG MP/PKG signaling actually requires late-phase cAMP/PKA-signaling in long-term memory formation. Recently,the effects of specific PDE inhibitors are explored on other cognitive domains including acquisition processes/short-term memory and information processing. It will be shown that elevation of central cG MP levels or cA MP levels after treatment with a specific PDE inhibitor both improve acquisition processes/short-term memory. In vitro studying the effects of PDE inhibitors on long-term potentiation,the physiological substrate of memory,supportthe in vivo data and further show that AMPA receptor trafficking very likely mediates the memory enhancing effects. In a translational approach we initially also investigated the effects of cG MP elevation via PDE5 inhibition with vardenafil or sildenafil on cognition in humans. However,in contrast to studies with rodents and monkeys,PDE5 inhibition had no effect in humans on cognition including memory processes. Inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） results from the interaction between an individual＇s immune response and precipitant environmental factors, which generatean anomalous chronic inflammatory response in thosewho are genetically predisposed. Various feeding practices have been implicated in the origin of IBD based on epidemiological observations in developed countries, but we do not have solid evidence for the etiological role played by specific food types. IBD is associated with frequent nutritional deficiencies, thepattern and severity of which depends on the extent,duration and activity of the inflammation. Nutritional support allows these deficiencies in calories, macro and micronutrients to be rectified. Enteral nutrition is also aprimary therapy for IBD, especially for Crohn＇s disease,as it allows the inflammatory activity to be controlled,kept in remission, and Drevents or delays the need forsurgery. Nutritional support is especially important in childhood IBD as an alternative to pharmacological treatment. This report discusses the complex relationship between diet and IBD.
