The hematological and serum biochemical profiles of apparently healthy exotic breed of dogs in jos, Plateau state, Nigeria was studied in this research. One hundred and seven exotic breed of dogs were examined from October - December, 2018. The results from physical, clinical examinations and parasitological examinations were used to determine apparently healthy exotic breed of dogs which were used in this study. The parameters measured were rectal temperature, parasitaemia, hematology which included red blood cells count, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and hemoglobin content;total white blood cell count, including eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes counts, and platelets;serum biochemical parameters also included Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total proteins, albumin, globulin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol and triglyceride, using standard methods. Hypoglycemic and Hypolipidemic Effect of Bitter Kola (<i>Garcinia kola</i>) Seed Extract on Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Albino Rats

The treatment and management of diabetes mellitus has been a challenge to achieve a total cure using conventional drugs. Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of bitter kola (m>Garcinia kolam>) seed extract on alloxan-induced diabetic rats were studied as a local product. Albino rats weighing about 200 g were investigated in groups using 200 - 800 mg/kg weight of bitter kola seed extract and the sample examined for glucose and lipid profiles using enzymatic methods and statistically analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS) windows, version 20.0. The results were expressed as the mean ± SD. The results for the serum glucose and low density lipoprotein cholesterols (LDL-C) concentrations of untreated diabetic rats, and treated rats showed a significant (P m 200 - 800 mg/kg when compared to the control rats. Total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) concentrations for untreated diabetic rats, and treated rats showed increase in concentration which was not significant (P > 0.05) from 200 - 800 mg/kg weight when compared with the controls. High density lipoproteins (HDL-C) concentrations for untreated diabetic rats, and treated rats showed increase in concentration which was significant (P m 200 - 800 mg/kg weight when compared with the controls. This study confirms the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of bitter kola (m>Garcinia kolam>) seed extract.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Flight Safety Improvement Using In-Flight Awareness

This paper presents a novel onboard system called In-Flight Awareness Augmentation System (IFA2S) to improve flight safety. IFA2S is designed to semi-automatically (with human supervision) avoid hazards and accidents due to either internal or external causal factors. The requirements were defined in an innovative way using Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) method and applied next to model the system. IFA2S increases aircraft awareness regarding both itself and its environment and, at the same time, recognizes platform and operational constraints to act in accordance to predefined decision algorithms. Results are presented through simulations and flight tests using state machines designed to allow the adoption of appropriate actions for the identified hazards. The different decision algorithms are evaluated over as many as possible hazard situations by simulations conducted with software Labview and XPlane flight simulator. Flight tests are performed in a small fixed wing aircraft and make use of a limited version IFA2S, partially attending identified requirements. Results support the conclusion that IFA2S is capable of improving flight safety.

Prevalence, Clinical Features and Outcome of Neonatal malaria in Two major Hospitals in jos, North-Central Nigeria

malaria was thought to be rare in neonates. However, recent studies report increasing prevalence in neonates. Clinical features of neonatal malaria have also not been adequately reported. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence, clinical features and outcome of malaria in neonates admitted into two tertiary hospitals in jos, Plateau State. All consecutive neonates aged 0 - 28 days admitted into the neonatal units of jos University Teaching Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, jos were recruited into the study. Giemsa stained blood films of the neonates were examined by trained microscopists. Neonates with malaria had presenting clinical features recorded and treated with amodiaquine (1st line) and quinine (2nd line). Clinical features and parasitaemia were monitored for 14 days for outcome. Of the 301 neonates enrolled, 16 had malaria parasitaemia giving a prevalence of 5.3%. Congenital malaria accounted for 87.5% of cases of neonatal malaria. Plasmodium falciparum mono-infection was responsible for all the cases of malaria. ITN use in pregnancy offered some protection against neonatal malaria (CI=0.2 - 0.7). The median parasite density was 255 (72, 385) parasites/μl. Fever was significantly present in 10 (66.7%) of the cases (p=0.03). Fifteen of the 16 neonates had clinical and parasitological cure on treatment with amodiaquine. One treatment failure had cure after retreatment with quinine. There was no mortality in all 16 neonates treated for malaria. malaria is not rare in neonates on admission in jos. Fever is the commonest clinical feature of neonatal malaria. Amodiaquine provided effective treatment of malaria in neonates in jos.

Influence of Some Water Physicochemical Parameters on the Distribution of Black Fly (Diptera, Simuliidae) in Some Rivers in Nasarawa State, Nigeria

Changes in the distribution of simuliid species and their disease transmission pattern may occur in response to climatic and environmental factors. Simuliid larvae were prospected in 34 rivers of Nasarawa State from January 2010 to December 2010. A total of 198,420 simuliid larvae collected were found to belong to six species as follows: S. damnosum s.l. (72.13%), S. adersi (24.31%), S. ruficorne (2.52%), S. cervicornutum (0.69%), S. alcocki (0.68%), and S. schoutedeni (0.17%). The monthly sample indicated continuous breeding throughout the year with peaks in July, August and September. The density of black fly larvae was estimated from samples collected on water plants per 1 dm2 of water plant surface. The study showed that both physicochemical and ecological parameters influenced the density of simuliids. Correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between simuliids density and the environmental factors. Data on prevalence and distribution of simuliids in Nasarawa State are sparse and scanty. Therefore, the result of this study provides additional information on the distribution and density of simuliids in Nasarawa State, Nigeria.

Objectives: The digestive track of mice and humans has always been an integral part of the pathogenesis of the Trypanosomes but is constantly overlooked. This realization opens up completely new strategies for the development of trypanosomes vaccines, allowing approaches that parenteral delivery forms would not permit. The target of the study was to compare the haematological changes and immunological responses of trypanosomiasis model systems (mice and rats) inoculated orally and intraperitoneally and to observe the afterward effect of a controlled drug [Isometamidium chloride (ISm)] in the restoration of these initial parameters. methods: To achieve this, a total of 40 rodents (20 rats and 20 mice) were purchased, then grouped into two [sixteen younger (1 - 5 weeks) and older (7 - 15 weeks) groups each]. They were further sub-grouped into five each. Body weights, Parasitaemia and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were taken before, after inoculation and after treatment with ISm at 4 mg/kg. Results: Based on presumptive clinical diagnosis, all rodents inoculated intraperitoneally showed clinical signs of fluctuations in weight, PCV and parasitaemia levels before, after inoculations and after treatment compared to those inoculated orally with a significant difference (P methods of inoculation. But more deaths were recorded among the mice when compared to the rats. Conclusion: Although these non-transgenic models would not have offered a completely new methods to vaccine development, their differences in response to various methods of inoculations is an indication of an exciting research processes and could offer desired results, particularly where transgenic rodents are employed.

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave *** paper provides a detailed description of:(1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload;(2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment.

Effect of Aqueous Extracts of Bitter Leaf Powder on the Corrosion Inhibition of Al-Si Alloy in 0.5 m Caustic Soda Solution

The effect of bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) extract as an inhibitor for aluminium silicon alloy in 0.5 m solution of caustic soda using weight loss method has been investigated. The alloy of composition 9% Si and 91% Al was sand cast at the Foundry Shop of the National metallurgical Development Centre, jos, Nigeria. The cast alloy was cut and machined to corrosion coupons and immersed into 0.5 m NaOH solution containing varying inhibitor concentrations (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.5% v/v) within a period of fifteen days. From the result, it was found that the adsorption of Vernonia amygdalina reduced the corrosion rate of this group of alloy in the alkaline medium. The inhibitive action of this plant extract was explained using inhibition efficiency and degree of surface coverage. The most suitable inhibitor concentration was found to be 0.5% with inhibition efficiency of 87%. The mechanism of inhibition is by physical adsorption and the adsorbed molecules of the inhibitor lies on the surface of the alloy blocking the active corrosion sites on the alloy, hence, giving the alloy a higher corrosion resistance in the studied environment.
