Avian responses to an extreme weather event:The case of the‘Filomena’snowstorm in Madrid(central Spain)

Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds,but owing to the stochastic nature of these events,it is not always possible to measure their *** January 2021,a strong snowstorm known as‘Filomena’affected Spain,mainly the region of Madrid(Central Spain),which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a *** bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021(before and after Filomena)at same locations,we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds:Wood Pigeon(Columba palumbus),eurasian Magpie(Pica pica)and Red-legged Partridge(Alectoris rufa).No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for Partridges,hence this species may have been negatively affected by *** suggest that in response to Filomena,Pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions,while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and Partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home *** results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions,especially for sedentary species.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the most common cause of dementia that principally affects older *** factors,such as oxidative stress,an increase in acetylcholinesterase activity,mitochondrial dysfunction,genotoxicity,and neuroinflammation are present in this syndrome,which leads to *** pathologies such as Alzheimer’s disease are considered late-onset diseases caused by the complex combination of genetic,epigenetic,and environmental *** are two main types of Alzheimer’s disease,known as familial Alzheimer’s disease(onsetears)and late-onset or sporadic Alzheimer’s disease(onset≥65 years).Patients with familial Alzheimer’s disease inherit the disease due to rare mutations on the amyloid precursor protein(APP),presenilin 1 and 2(PSeN1 and PSeN2)genes in an autosomaldominantly fashion with closely 100%*** contrast,a different picture seems to emerge for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease,which exhibits numerous non-Mendelian anomalies suggesting an epigenetic component in its ***,the fundamental pathophysiological mechanisms driving Alzheimer’s disease are interfaced with epigenetic ***,the dynamic nature of epigenetics seems to open up new avenues and hope in regenerative neurogenesis to improve brain repair in Alzheimer’s disease or following injury or stroke in *** recent years,there has been an increase in interest in using natural products for the treatment of neurodegenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer’s *** epigenetic mechanisms,such as DNA methylation,non-coding RNAs,histone modification,and chromatin conformation regulation,natural compounds appear to exert neuroprotective *** we do not purport to cover every in this work,we do attempt to illustrate how various phytochemical compounds regulate the epigenetic effects of a few Alzheimer’s disease-related genes.

A review of multi-chamber oscillating water column(OWC)device designs is *** significant variations of these devices are discussed,onshore OWC(OOWC)and a floating OWC(FOWC).The efficiency results of several theoretical studies based on low-and high-fidelity numerical models are presented and compared with the model scale ***,low-fidelity numerical models are very fast to run,but their accuracy is limited compared with high-fidelity numerical *** model experiments usually give results much more accurate than numerical models,but they need adequate facilities and are very *** the case of the OOWC,all models show a similar trend of total efficiency,but while the analytical model shows a maximum value of around 90%efficiency,the CFD model shows 60%,and the experiments only go up to 40%.The main reason is connected with the mathematical simplifications and assumptions that do not represent all the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic processes between the water,air,and *** the case of the FOWC,interestingly,the experimental results show a maximum efficiency of almost 100%,while the analytical model only predicts a maximum of 80%.The efficiency seems highly dependent on the heave motion resonance of the entire device,where the analytical model fails to predict this natural frequency.

Background:The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcomes of dissatisfed patients reporting poor visual quality following implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses(MF-IOLs),managed by IOL exchange with another multifocal optical ***:This is a retrospective series of ***-IOL exchange was done in 15 dissatisfed patients(30 eyes)with the perception of poor visual quality for far distance afected by neuroadaptation *** underwent a bilateral exchange of a MF-IOL with another MF-IOL of a diferent optical *** outcomes and complications were *** including Quality of Vision(QoV),Visual Function Index-14(VF-14)and its Rasch-revised version(VF-8R)and a satisfaction questionnaire were also used for outcome ***:The mean elapsed time from implantation to explantation-reimplantation was 11.8 *** QoV scores improved signifcantly across all the three *** function improved with a change in VF-14 score from 60.41±24.81 to 90.16±10.91(Pe VF-8R score improved as *** uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.24 to 0.12 logMAR after exchange(Pected distance visual acuity improved from 0.15 to 0.04 logMAR(Pety and efcacy indexes reached 1.46 and 1.16,*** patients’satisfaction following MF-IOL exchange,80%of the patients reported they would have the MF-IOL reimplantation procedure ***:Patient dissatisfaction with neuroadaptation failure following MF-IOL implantation can be managed in 80%of our cases by MF-IOL exchange with a diferent MF-IOL optical profle.

Correlative species distribution models(SDMs)are important tools to estimate species’geographic distribution across space and time,but their reliability heavily relies on the availability and quality of occurrence *** can be biased when occurrences do not fully represent the environmental requirement of a *** tested to what extent species’physiological knowledge might influence SDM *** on the Japanese sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus within the coastal ocean of east Asia,we compiled a comprehensive dataset of occurrence *** then explored the importance of incorporating physiological knowledge into SDMs by calibrating two types of correlative SDMs:a naïve model that solely depends on environmental correlates,and a physiologically informed model that further incorporates physiological information as *** further tested the models’sensitivity to calibration area choices by fitting them with different buffered areas around known *** with naïve models,the physiologically informed models successfully captured the negative influence of high temperature on *** and were less sensitive to the choice of calibration *** naïve models resulted in more optimistic prediction of the changes of potential distributions under climate change(i.e.,larger range expansion and less contraction)than the physiologically informed *** findings highlight benefits from incorporating physiological information into correlative SDMs,namely mitigating the uncertainties associated with the choice of calibration *** these promising features,we encourage future SDM studies to consider species physi-ological information where available.
