The incidence of major chronic Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) medically diagnosed or treated, was studies in a cross section of Kuwait adult population as well as their daily levels of physical activity (PA) as recalled by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ. A group of 1957 subjects 17 - 65 years of age, representative of the Kuwait population was selected using last year high school students and their relatives as well as government workers in each Kuwait governorate. Descriptive statistics, frequency tables, chi square and Fisher tests were used. ANOVA or Mann Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for comparisons. The percentage of subjects in the low categorical PA level (from IPAQ) is high (29.4%) even at a young age (17 - 24), similar in prevalence to overweight/obesity (30%). At age 45, obesity increases to 40% with little change in % subjects of low PA. Weighted average categorical PA was 1280 ***/week reflecting that the majority (40%) of subjects belonged to the moderate PA category. A high proportion (38%) of subjects in the 17 - 24 age category contributed to the observed level of PA activity. Incidence of overweight and obesity increased from 30 to more than 55% from the second to the sixth decade of life. Hyperlipidemias increased in incidence from 8% to 45% of the sample from the third to the sixth decades of age. Hypertension and diabetes increased from the 4th to the 6th decades of life to affect from 14% to 40% and from 10% to 36% of the studied population, respectively. Incidence of Heart Disease increased from 9% to 15% of the sample population, between the 5th and 6th decades of life. The data indicate a sequence of events, initiated by overweight and obesity as early as in the 2d decade of life, followed by hyperlipidemia in the 3d decade, diabetes and hypertension in the 4th, and heart disease in the 5th decade of life. Transanal Endoscopic Video Assisted Rectal Lesion Resection, New Techniques Addressing Neoplasms

Early rectal cancer beyond the reach of conventional instruments has resulted in major abdominal and pelvic operations. As visualization is compromised beyond 6 - 8 cm, proximal to the anal verge, there have been several innovations and techniques to address T1 or T2 rectal cancer in the mid to upper rectum. Transanal Endscopic Microsurgery (TEM) was a technique that had garnered some success, however with expensive instrumentation along with limitations in instrument mobility, this technology was not applicable to many patients. Transanal Endoscopic Video Assisted (TEVA) rectal resection offers a cheap and readily accessible media to address early rectal cancer. Any hospital with standard laparoscopic ability is capable to offer TEVA rectal resection. We do advocate appropriate patient selection and advise that there is a learning curve with the increased requirement for technical difficulty. Once mastered, however, this surgical approach does provide yet another tool in the armamentarium of the surgeon.

Background: Malassezia pachydermatis is the main causative agent of canine otitis and also of a myriad of dermatological problems in companion animals;its interaction mechanisms with host cells are still unclear. Objectives: To establish an in vitro infection model of M. pachydermatis-exposed RK13 cells in order to evaluate cell morphological changes as well as changes in the structure of actin filaments. Methods: Cultures of RK13 cells were infected with M. pachydermatis, alterations caused by the yeast were evaluated by optical and fluorescence microscopy. Results: M. pachydermatis adheres itself to the cell and produces the formation of multiple agglomerates that cause changes in cell morphology, formation of cell aggregates in overlays, presence of syncytia and destruction of cell culture structure. The damaged cells presented changes in the actin filaments consisting of thickening of the cell cortex and loss of stress fibers. On the other hand, the formation of perinuclear actin rings in the yeasts was observed. Conclusions: An in vitro infection model was established with M. pachydermatis and alterations in cell morphology were observed consisting of changes in the structure of the actin filaments, overgrowth of the cells and the presence of syncytia.

如今,由于长期使用私家车造成的影响,开发可持续交通系统的意义正在被重新考虑。骑行变得更受欢迎,因为它能够缓解拥堵,增强健康和环境效益,而且灵活机动。此外,骑行是一种能够在短距离内与私家车竞争的旅行方式,而且成本相对较低。建设自行车设施、自行车专用基础设施以及开发共享单车系统是鼓励城市内单车使用和增加单车份额的必要政策的一部分。在这些系统中,使用者可以从一个站点取车,而还车时可以还到他们认为的最方便的其它站点。由于使用者不需要将车换回原站点,因此对于短途旅行来说这种方法非常实用。此外,当共享单车系统与现有的运输系统连接起来时,它便解决了“最后一公里”的难题。不同交通方式之间的整合是可持续交通模式发展中最重要的因素之一,因为它鼓励使用比私人车辆更高效利用城市空间和能源的交通工具。然而,考虑到安全是人们关心的主要问题,共享单车系统应该成为系统工程的一部分,该系统工程不仅包括站点位置,还包括连接它们的专用自行车路网,从而为乘客提供安全驾驶的机会。本篇硕士论文首先描述了自行车的特点,突出了自行车的优缺点,展示了社区和城市如何从骑行中受益。其次,从优化的角度出发,提出了两个同时考虑单车站点位置和单车路网布局的模型。第二种模式还考虑到与其他交通运输模式的整合,认为多式联运发展更可持续的交通运输系统。以乌拉圭蒙得维的亚市为例,进行了案例研究。结果表明,考虑和不考虑站点连接网络的修建成本两种情况下,站点的最优位置不同。最后,将所提出的模型与传统模型进行了比较,表明在开发安全的自行车网络时该模型具有成本效益,因为在相似的预算下,该模型可以满足更多的需求。

断裂最大位移与断裂迹长遵循幂律关系 :D =cLn,但幂指数n的大小有很大的变化范围。为探索幂指数n的大小和断裂机制 ,从已发表的文献中收集了 18组数据 ,这些数据的断裂长度具有 8个数量级的跨度。经相关分析 ,我们得到n值的大小变化于 0 5 5和 1 6 5之间 ,平均值为 1 0 839。由于走滑断裂的最大长度在其倾向方向 ,不宜与倾滑断裂一起统计 ,我们去掉一组走向滑动断裂的数据 ,幂指数平均值为 1 10 6 6。用双回归方法得到的幂指数峰值 (nd)是 1 0～ 1 1。这些结果表明断裂最大位移与断裂迹长应该是非常接近线性关系。这种线性关系可以用Dugdale模型加以解释。该模型认为弹塑性物质拉张裂缝端点的变形是非弹性变形。模型的适用范围是单一岩性 ,一次构造力作用。我们认为n值的大小之所以有很大的变化范围 ,有可能受到断裂迹线长度偏差的影响 ,造成长度偏差的因素包括 :不同的观察平面 ,断裂端点的分辨率 ,断裂连接作用 ,岩石力学性质变化 ,断裂多期活动等。

Entropy Production Rate for Avascular Tumor Growth

The entropy production rate was determined for avascular tumor growth. The proposed formula relates the fractal dimension of the tumor contour with the quotient between mitosis and apoptosis rate, which can be used to characterize the degree of proliferation of tumor cells. The entropy production rate was determined for fourteen tumor cell lines as a physical function of cancer robustness. The entropy production rate is a hallmark that allows us the possibility of prognosis of tumor proliferation and invasion capacities, key fac-tors to improve cancer therapy.
