Background:Failure to rescue has been an effective quality metric in congenital heart ***,mor-bidity and mortality depend greatly on non-modifiable individual factors and have a weak correlation with better-quality *** aim to measure the complications,mortality,and risk factors in pediatric patients undergoing congenital heart surgery in a high-complexity institution located in a middle-income country and compare it with other institutions that have conducted a similar ***:A retrospective observational study was conducted in a high-complexity service provider institution,in Cali,*** pediatric patients undergoing any congenital heart surgery between 2019 and 2022 were *** main outcomes evaluated in the study were complication,mortality,and failure to rescue *** and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with mortality as the outcome ***:We evaluated 308 congenital heart *** the outcomes,201(65%)complications occurred,23(7.5%)patients died,and the FTR of the entire cohort was 11.4%.The presence of a postoperative complication(OR 14.88,CI 3.06–268.37,p=0.009),age(OR 0.79,CI 0.57–0.96,p=0.068),and urgent/emergent surgery(OR 8.14,CI 2.97–28.66,phe most significant variables in predicting ***:Failure to rescue is an effective and comparable quality measure in healthcare institutions and is the major contributor to postoperative mortality in congenital heart *** our higher mortality and complication rate,we obtained a comparable failure to rescue rate to high-income countries’health institutions.

In this editorial,we comment on the article by Zhang et al entitled Development of a machine learning-based model for predicting the risk of early postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular *** carcinoma(hCC),which is characterized by high incidence and mortality rates,remains a major global health challenge primarily due to the critical issue of postoperative *** recurrence,defined as recurrence that occurs within 2 years posttreatment,is linked to the hidden spread of the primary tumor and significantly impacts patient *** predictive factors,including both patient-and treatment-related factors,have limited predictive ability with respect to hCC *** integration of machine learning algorithms is fueled by the exponential growth of computational power and has revolutionized hCC *** study by Zhang et al demonstrated the use of a groundbreaking preoperative prediction model for early postoperative hCC *** persist,including sample size constraints,issues with handling data,and the need for further validation and *** study emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts,multicenter studies and comparative analyses to validate and refine the *** these challenges and exploring innovative approaches,such as multi-omics integration,will enhance personalized oncology *** study marks a significant stride toward precise,efficient,and personalized oncology practices,thus offering hope for improved patient outcomes in the field of hCC treatment.

Deep optics preconditioner for modulation-free pyramid wavefront sensing

The pyramid wavefront sensor(PWFS)can provide the sensitivity needed for demanding adaptive optics applications,such as imaging exoplanets using the future extremely large telescopes of over 30 m of diameter(D).however,its exquisite sensitivity has a limited linear range of operation,or dynamic range,although it can be extended through the use of beam modulation—despite sacrificing sensitivity and requiring additional optical *** by artificial intelligence techniques,this work proposes to train an optical layer—comprising a passive diffractive element placed at a conjugated Fourier plane of the pyramid prism—to boost the linear response of the pyramid sensor without the need for cumbersome *** develop an end-2-end simulation to train the diffractive element,which acts as an optical preconditioner to the traditional least-square modal phase estimation *** results with a large range of turbulence conditions show a noticeable improvement in the aberration estimation performance equivalent to over 3λ∕D of modulation when using the optically preconditioned deep PWFS(DPWFS).Experimental results validate the advantages of using the designed optical layer,where the DPWFS can pair the performance of a traditional PWFS with 2λ∕D of *** and adding an optical preconditioner to the PWFS is just the tip of the iceberg,since the proposed deep optics methodology can be used for the design of a completely new generation of wavefront sensors that can better fit the demands of sophisticated adaptive optics applications such as ground-to-space and underwater optical communications and imaging through scattering media.

Experimental and numerical analysis of multi-chamber oscillating water column devices

A review of multi-chamber oscillating water column(OWC)device designs is *** significant variations of these devices are discussed,onshore OWC(OOWC)and a floating OWC(FOWC).The efficiency results of several theoretical studies based on low-and high-fidelity numerical models are presented and compared with the model scale ***,low-fidelity numerical models are very fast to run,but their accuracy is limited compared with high-fidelity numerical *** model experiments usually give results much more accurate than numerical models,but they need adequate facilities and are very *** the case of the OOWC,all models show a similar trend of total efficiency,but while the analytical model shows a maximum value of around 90%efficiency,the CFD model shows 60%,and the experiments only go up to 40%.The main reason is connected with the mathematical simplifications and assumptions that do not represent all the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic processes between the water,air,and *** the case of the FOWC,interestingly,the experimental results show a maximum efficiency of almost 100%,while the analytical model only predicts a maximum of 80%.The efficiency seems highly dependent on the heave motion resonance of the entire device,where the analytical model fails to predict this natural frequency.

Litterfall production modeling based on climatic variables and nutrient return from stands of Eucalyptusgrandis hill ex Maiden and Pinustaeda L.

Native grasslands in the Pampas of South America are increasingly being replaced by Eucalyptus and Pinus stands. The short rotation regimes used for the stands require high nutrient levels, with litterfall being a major source of nutrient return. To model the litterfall production using climatic variables and assess the nutrient return in 14-year-old Eucalyptusgrandis and Pinustaeda stands, we measured litter production over 2 years, using conical litter traps, and monitored climatic variables. Mean temperature, accumulated precipitation, and mean maximum vapor pressure deficit at the seasonal level influenced litterfall production by ***; seasonal accumulated precipitation and mean maximum temperature affected litterfall by ***. The regression tree modeling based on these climatic variables had great accuracy and predictive power for *** (N = 33; MAE (mean absolute error) = 0.65; RMSE (root mean square error) = 0.91; R2 = 0.71) and *** (N = 108; MAE = 1.50; RMSE = 1.59; R-2 = 0.72). The nutrient return followed a similar pattern to litterfall deposition, as well as the order of importance of macronutrients (***: Ca > N > K > Mg > P; ***: N > Ca > K > Mg > P) and micronutrients (*** and ***: Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu) in both species. This study constitutes a first approximation of factors that affect litterfall and nutrient return in these systems.

Correlative species distribution models(SDMs)are important tools to estimate species’geographic distribution across space and time,but their reliability heavily relies on the availability and quality of occurrence *** can be biased when occurrences do not fully represent the environmental requirement of a *** tested to what extent species’physiological knowledge might influence SDM *** on the Japanese sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus within the coastal ocean of East Asia,we compiled a comprehensive dataset of occurrence *** then explored the importance of incorporating physiological knowledge into SDMs by calibrating two types of correlative SDMs:a naïve model that solely depends on environmental correlates,and a physiologically informed model that further incorporates physiological information as *** further tested the models’sensitivity to calibration area choices by fitting them with different buffered areas around known *** with naïve models,the physiologically informed models successfully captured the negative influence of high temperature on *** and were less sensitive to the choice of calibration *** naïve models resulted in more optimistic prediction of the changes of potential distributions under climate change(i.e.,larger range expansion and less contraction)than the physiologically informed *** findings highlight benefits from incorporating physiological information into correlative SDMs,namely mitigating the uncertainties associated with the choice of calibration *** these promising features,we encourage future SDM studies to consider species physi-ological information where available.
