Serum vitamin D and colonic vitamin D receptor in inflammatory bowel disease

AIM: To determine serum vitamin D levels and colonic vitamin D receptor(VDR) expression in inflammatory bowel disease(IbD) and non-IbD patients and correlate these with ***: Puerto Rican IbD(n = 10) and non-IbD(n = 10) patients ≥ 21 years old scheduled for colonoscopy were recruited. Each patient completed a questionnaire and provided a serum sample and a colonic biopsy of normal-appearing mucosa. For IbD patients, an additional biopsy was collected from visually diseased mucosa. Serum vitamin D levels were measured by ultra-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Hematoxylin and eosin stained tissue sections from colonic biopsies were classified histologically as normal or colitis(active/inactive), and scored for the degree of inflammation present(0-3, inactive/absent to severe). Tissue sections from colonic biopsies were also stained by immunohistochemistry for VDR, for which representative diagnostic areas were photographed and scored for staining intensity using a 4-point ***: The IbD cohort was significantly younger(40.40 ± 5.27, P bD cohort(56.70 ± 1.64) with a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency(40% vs 20%, respectively) and insufficiency(70% vs 50%, respectively). Histologic inflammation was significantly higher in visually diseased mucosa from IbD patients(1.95 ± 0.25) than in normalappearing mucosa from control patients(0.25 ± 0.08, P bD patients(0.65 ± 0.36, P bD patients(r =-0.44, P bD patients with Crohn's disease(r =-0.69, P but not in normal-appearing colonic tissue from control patients or IbD patients. Control and IbD patient serum vitamin D levels correlated positively with VDR expression in normal colon from control and IbD patients(r = 0.38, P < 0.05) and with patient age(r = 0.54, P < 0.01). UV radiation and ozonation were investigated as disinfection alternatives for the wastewater treatment plant. The inactivation of total and fecal coliforms using ozone and ultraviolet radiation as separate treatments was evaluated. Different ozone concentrations (3 to 40 mg O3/L) were applied and UV fluencies ranging from 8.5 to 12 mJ/cm2 at different pH values (from 5 to 9) were tested. best results were obtained for ozone doses near 20 mg/min with removals of 72% and 78% of fecal and total coliforms, respectively. The ozone also was capable of oxidizing organic matter in the effluent measured as COD (the highest removal obtained was 36% for 20 mg O3/min). Maximum bacterial resistance was observed at pH 7 in both cases. The UV light offered a high bacterial inactivation (over 80%) and the lowest bacterial inactivation was observed at pH 7. Finally, we obtained the electric energy per order (EEO, kWh/m3/order), defined as the electric energy (kW-h) required to degrade a contaminant by one order of magnitude in a unit volume of contaminated water, being noteworthy that EEO values for the UV process resulted were lower than those determined for the process with ozone in all the water flow tested.

表面活性剂强化土壤清洗(SESW)技术被用于工业污染土壤的修复处理,土壤中元素包括碱土金属、钠、钾、钙、镁,其含量分别为2866、2036、2783和4149mg/kg,重金属砷、镉、铜、铅、镍和锌的含量分别为4019、14、35582、70、2603和261mg/kg。研究发现,使用不同的表面活性剂能够高效去除铜、镍和锌,部分清除铅、砷和镉。除砷以外,对于后三种金属,自来水比表面活性剂溶液的清除效果更好。表面活性剂的对于所有金属的平均清除率依次为67.1%(Tween 80),64.9%(Surfacpol 14104)和61.2%(Emulgin W600)。对特定金属的清除率依次为TEXAPON N-40(铜、镍、锌清除率分别是83.2%、82.8%和86.6%),Tween 80(镉,锌和铜清除率分别是85.9%,85.4%和81.5%)和Polafix CAPb(镍,锌和砷清除率分别是79%,83.2%和49.7%)。采用POLAFIX LO时去除率最低,仅为45%,远低于自来水的平均去除率50.2%。除了mezquite gum是采用0.1%溶液洗涤之外,其他污染物均采用浓度0.5%的表面活性剂溶液进行洗涤。

Postoperative Endophthalmitis Caused by Candida Parapsilosis: A Case Report

Purpose: To report an unusual case of postcataract endophthalmitis secondary to Candida parapsilosis. Case Presentation: A 77-year-old female patient was admitted to the emergency ward with reduced visual acuity (VA), and redness and pain in the right eye (RE) with a few hours of evolution. The patient underwent cataract surgery in the right eye 50 days earlier;no abnormalities were discovered in postsurgery check-ups on the following days. biomicroscopy revealed corneal oedema, tyndall ++++, and flare +++. Capsule-shaped whitish deposits and posterior synechiae were also reported. Fundoscopy: not visible due to anterior segment opacity. RE ultrasound: mild vitritis, attached retina. Due to a strong suspicion of endophthalmitis, an aqueous humour biopsy was performed and the presence of Candida parapsilosis sensitive to amphotericin b and voriconazole was revealed. In view of a poor prognosis, we decided to carry out a vitrectomy, removal of the IOL + capsular bag complex and intravitreal injection of amphotericin b. After several check-ups, the patient reported being diagnosed with a fungal infection in her fingernails some time ago. She was referred for a microbiological testing, which confirmed the presence of Candida in the fingernails. Conclusions: Fungal endophthalmitis is uncommon in the postoperative setting, with most of the cases being attributable to the Candida species. The combination of pars plana vitrectomy, removal of the IOL + capsular bag complex and antifungal agents was able to successfully treat this case of postoperative endophthalmitis due to Candida parapsilosis. The relationship between postoperative Candida endophthalmitis and Candida nail infection is dramatic. To date, only one case of endogenous endophthalmitis associated with complicated onychomycosis has been reported.

Novel EPS/TiO2 Nanocomposite Prepared from Recycled Polystyrene

The synthesis and characterization of a new nanocomposite material that was prepared from recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) is reported here. The EPS was obtained from chemical reagent box insulation. To obtain the nanocomposite, these materials were dispersed in a solvent, mixed with TiCl4 and heated. The resulting new material was characterized with SEM, TEM, TGA, bET, Raman and IR techniques. The Raman and IR spectra provided complementary information regarding the structure of the nanocomposite. The Raman spectra were used to identify the crystalline structure of TiO2 in the nanocomposite. In contrast, the IR spectra were used to identify the organic portion of the nanocomposite. The TEM images indicated that the nanocomposites had an average particle size of 6 - 12 nm. In addition, the adsorption and photocatalytic properties of the new material were evaluated. The EPS/TiO2 nanocomposite was efficient at degrading methylene blue (Mb) dye solutions under UV irradiation. Furthermore, according to thermal analysis, this material had greater polymer stability due to the incorporation of TiO2.

Aim: To elucidate the anti-apoptotic properties of nuclear factor kappa light-chain-enhancer of activated b cells (NF-κb) and feedback regulation of NF-κb by nuclear factor of kappa light-chain-enhancer of activated b-cells inhibitor alpha (Iκbα). Methods: We developed an in vitro model of Sjogren’s syndrome by transfecting human salivary gland (HSG) and acinar cells (NS-SV-AC) with a plasmid-encoding IκbαM (pCMV-IκbαM), a degradation-resistant Iκbα (nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in b-cells inhibitor, alpha)-mutant, and examined TNF-induced apoptosis and anti-apoptotic properties of NF-κb. Apoptosis and induction of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes were investigated by cDNA arrays, RT-PCR, electrophoretic mobility shift assays, and western blot. Results: In the presence of NF-κb inhibitors, TNF-induced apoptosis was markedly increased in both salivary gland and acinar cells. Increased caspase-3 activity was present in both HSG and NS-SV-AC cells. IκbαM-transfected salivary gland cells were more sensitive to TNF-induced apoptosis than IκbαM-transfected acinar cells. Transcription of pro-apoptotic genes was confirmed in both HSG and NS-SV-AC cells that were transfected with IκbαM. Results from caspase-3 activity assay confirmed previous experiments showing an apoptotic role for NF-κb. Conclusion: Data from gene expression arrays suggest that different mechanisms may operate during TNF-induced apoptosis in salivary gland ductal and acinar cells.

We present the entanglement measures of a tetrapartite W-class entangled system in a noninertial frame, where the transformation between Minkowski and Rindler coordinates is *** cases are ***, when one qubit has uniform acceleration whilst the other three remain ***, when two qubits have nonuniform accelerations and the others stay *** 1–1 tangle, 1–3 tangle, and whole entanglement measurements π4 and Π4, are studied and illustrated with graphics through their dependence on the acceleration parameter rd for the first case and rc and rd for the second *** is found that the negativities(1–1 tangle and 1–3 tangle) and π-tangle decrease when the acceleration parameter rd or in the second case rc and rd increase, remaining a nonzero entanglement in the majority of the *** means that the system will be always entangled except for special *** is shown that only the 1–1 tangle for the first case vanishes at infinite accelerations, but for the second case the 1–1 tangle disappears completely when r > *** analytical expression for the von Neumann information entropy of the system is found and we note that it increases with the acceleration parameter.

Melanocytic nevi are a transient in vivo proliferation of melanocytes that after time undergo cellular senescence. Most nevi harbor b-Raf mutations, which appear to activate cellular mechanisms of senescence in melanocytes. Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β), a critical downstream effector of the AKT signaling pathway, is involved in the development of melanoma and has been associated with senescence in melanocytes. Our immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence studies revealed distinct, perinuclear, dot-like reactivity of GSK-3β in melanocytic nevi. Furthermore, our tissue microarray analysis demonstrated significant perinuclear dot-like sublocalization of GSK-3β in melanocytic nevi compared with the amount of GSK-3β observed in melanoma (P β in human nevi may contribute to senescence in melanocytes.
