A Novel Approach to Measuring Spatiotemporal Changes in Social Vulnerability at the Local Level in Portugal

Social vulnerability,as one of the risk components,partially explains the magnitude of the impacts observed after a *** this study,a spatiotemporally comparable assessment of social vulnerability and its drivers was conducted in Portugal,at the civil parish level,for three census *** first challenging step consisted of the selection of meaningful and consistent variables over *** were normalized using the Adjusted Mazziotta-Pareto Index(AMPI)to obtain comparable adimensional-normalized values.A joint principal component analysis(PCA)was applied,resulting in a robust set of variables,interpretable from the point of view of their self-grouping around vulnerability drivers.A separate PCA for each census was also conducted,which proved to be useful in analyzing changes in the composition and type of drivers,although only the joint PCA allows the monitoring of spatiotemporal changes in social vulnerability scores and drivers from 1991 to 2011.A general improvement in social vulnerability was observed for *** two main drivers are the economic condition(PC1),and aging and depopulation(PC2).The remaining drivers highlighted are uprooting and internal mobility,and daily *** data proved their value in the territorial,social,and demographic characterization of the country,to support medium-and long-term disaster risk reduction measures.

Improvement of the Mass Spectrometry Process on an Ion Implantation

Mass spectrometry is an essential part of ion implantation. Therefore, in order to guarantee beam purity avoiding contamination of the implanted samples, a system was developed for the high current implanter at the Laboratory of Accelerators and Radiation Technologies (LATR) at the Instituto Superior Técnico. The system presented and discussed in this paper was developed using a LabVIEW code and uses a PC to control and display the mass spectrum. It also permits to save all data acquired for posterior analysis. In order to show some capabilities of this system, some experimental results are presented.

The rational design of emulsions requires study of the main factors that influence their formation, physicochemical properties and, consequently, stability and performance. The use of vegetable oils in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries has recently become attractive. Dipteryx alata Vogel(D. alata) is an oleaginous species native to Brazil. The seeds of this species contain highly unsaturated oil with significant amounts of tocopherols and phytosterols, representing an important source of agents capable of combatting oxidative processes. In this work, a lamellar gel phase emulsion using oil extracted from the seeds of D. alata(baru) was developed. The steps involved in the development of this research were as follows: 1) development of formulations and 2) in vitro assays by simulating the evaporation of the final product after application to the skin and Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy(EPR) of fatty acid spin labels was used to investigate the profile of interaction of the dispersed systems with stratum corneum(SC) lipids. The results indicate that the developed system shows no signs of instability during the storage period. Moreover, EPR studies indicated that D. alata oil and especially the developed formulation were able to increase SC lipid fluidity and extract a fatty-acid spin label from the lipid domain structures of SC, demonstrating its potential to act as a drug or skin care vehicle.

Clams of the family Veneridae in northwest Mexico have traditionally been exploited by small-scale *** their socioeconomic importance for coastal communities in the region,most catch zones are currently in decline due to a lack of harvest control regulations that would impede the depletion of local fishing *** Puerto Libertad,in the northern reaches of the Gulf of California,banks of commercially unexploited clam species,including Megapitaria aurantiaca,*** and Dosinia ponderosa,were *** adequate management and exploitation of these banks requires developing basic knowledge regarding the abundance of the species and establishing reference points to determine clear,simple harvest *** goal of this study was to identify population abundance in these banks and ascertain the parameters of the life history of the species found there in order to propose a harvest strategy that will allow the sustainable exploitation of this resource.A total of 288 transects were conducted in the two clam banks to identify species *** was determined using a geostatistical *** relative cohort biomass-at-length was estimated to evaluate the effect of different lengths of first capture on the remaining *** on these data,two harvest control regulations were proposed:a maximum catch(Cmax)of 10%of the total estimated biomass,and a minimum optimal catch size(Lc).The abundance estimates were ***(266,293-381,881 individuals);***(2,779,100-3,455,597);and ***(408,783-447,391).The harvest control regulations proposed are:***,Cmax=2.98 t and Lc=50.33 mm;***,Cmax=49.67 t and Lc=103.44 mm;and ***,Cmax=15.87 t and Lc=80.85 *** results are important as reference information for implementing harvest strategies in clam-fishing banks,and as a contribution to the management and sustainable exploitation of fisheries in the region.

Secondary forests and human-made forest gaps are conspicuous features of tropical ***,behavioral responses to these aspects of anthropogenically modified forests remain poorly ***,we analyze the effects of small human-made clearings and secondary forests on tropical bats by examining the guild-and species-level activity patterns of phyllostomids sampled in the Central Amazon,***,we contrast the temporal activity patterns and degree of temporal overlap of 6 frugivorous and 4 gleaning animalivorous species in old-growth forest and second-growth forest and of 4 frugivores in old-growth forest and forest *** activity patterns of frugivores and gleaning animalivores did not change between old-growth forest and second-growth,nor did the activity patterns of frugivores between old-growth forest and ***,at the species level,we detected significant differences for Artibeus obscurus(old-growth forest ***-growth)and ***(old-growth forest ***).The degree of temporal overlap was greater than random in all sampled ***,for frugivorous species,the degree of temporal overlap was similar between old-growth forest and second-growth;whereas for gleaning animalivores,it was lower in second-growth than in old-growth *** the contrary,forest clearings were characterized by increased temporal overlap between *** in activity patterns and temporal overlap may result from differential foraging opportunities and dissimilar predation ***,our analyses suggest that activity patterns of bats in second-growth and small forest clearings,2 of the most prominent habitats in humanized tropical landscapes,varies little from the activity patterns in old-growth forest.

Predictive testing for two neurodegenerative disorders(FAP and HD):A psychological point of view

In this retrospective study, we have researched the psychological impact of pre-symptomatic testing (PST) for 2 autosomal dominant late-onset diseases: Huntington disease (HD and familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP) V30M TTR. The study included 53 subjects: 40 (75.5%) were the offspring at risk for FAP and 13 (24.5%) for HD. Of these, 38 (73.1%) received the carrier result and 12 (23.1%) the noncarrier result;3 of them did not want to know the result. The indicators taken for emotional distress were the subscales and global indexes of psychopathological Behavior Symptoms Inventory (BSI), applied in the pre-test and post-test, one-year after notification of results. Values decreased significantly one year after the implementation of the PST, regardless of the studied disease or test result;this seems to corroborate previous studies showing that testing does not increase pre-symptomatic levels of emotional disturbance in individuals. However, the subjects studied showed, for all subscales and global indexes of the BSI, significantly higher values than those of control groups.

Heart Rate Variability Applied to Short-Term Cardiovascular Event Risk Assessment

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment is an important instrument to enhance the clinical decision in the daily practice as well as to improve the preventive health care promoting the transfer from the hospital to patient’s home. Due to its importance, clinical guidelines recommend the use of risk scores to predict the risk of a cardiovascular disease event. Therefore, there are several well known risk assessment tools, unfortunately they present some *** work addresses this problem with two different methodologies:1) combination of risk assessment tools based on fusion of Bayesian classifiers complemented with genetic algorithm optimization;2) personalization of risk assessment through the creation of groups of patients that maximize the performance of each risk assessment tool. This last approach is implemented based on subtractive clustering applied to a reduced-dimension *** methodologies were developed to short-term CVD risk prediction for patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes without ST segment eleva-tion (ACS-NSTEMI). Two different real patients’ datasets were considered to validate the developed strategies:1) Santa Cruz Hospital, Portugal, N=460 patients;2)LeiriaPombal Hospital Centre, Portugal, N=99 *** work improved the performance in relation to current risk assessment tools reaching maximum values of sensitivity, specificity and geometric mean of, respectively, 80.0%, 82.9%, 81.5%. Besides this enhancement, the proposed methodologies allow the incorporation of new risk factors, deal with missing risk factors and avoid the selection of a single tool to be applied in the daily clinical practice. In spite of these achievements, the CVD risk assessment (patient stratification) should be improved. The incorporation of new risk factors recognized as clinically significant, namely parameters derived from heart rate variability (HRV), is introduced in this work. Predicting Mass Transfer Extraction with Steam Flow, Applying Boundary-Layer Concepts

Theory and concepts of boundary layer mass transfer is applied to correlate experimental data on extraction of essential oils from vegetable leaves and stems, using steam. From these theory, concepts and experimental data with seven systems, two correlations are developed to predict the Sherwood number and mass transfer coefficient as function of Reynolds and Schmidt numbers. From these equations, the molar flux, the amount of solute extracted, and the yield of extraction is predicted. A steam of higher temperature normally improves the mass transfer and the yield. A method to estimate the enhancement for temperature increase is proposed. The correlations developed are applied to a case with industrial size that was no part of the data for correlation generation. Theory may be applied for industrial applications.

Analysis of Forging Dies Coated with Tungsten Carbide through HVOF Processing

In this paper we present a performance evaluation of thermal spraying coated hot forging dies conducted in a production line. The High Velocity Oxy-Fuel process was used for the deposition of a tungsten carbide coating, which is characterized by its optimal adherence and low porosity. A metallurgical characterization of the layer was previously done, in order to obtain reference information to assist in the interpretation of the practical tests results. The coated die allowed an increase in productivity of 37.5%, besides better dimensional stability results through the process and legibility of printed numbers.
