AIM:To determine whether or not the use of antioxidant supplementation aids in the prevention of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography ***:A systematic review of randomized controlled trials(RCTs) was made to evaluate the preventive effect of prophylactic antioxidant supplementation in post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis(PEP).The inclusion criteria included:acute post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis in adults; randomized clinical trials with the use of any antioxidant as an intervention compared with placebo,to reduce *** outcome measure was the incidence and severity of *** RCTs involving 3110 patients since 1999 *** antioxidants used were selenite,β-carotene,and pentoxifylline(each one in one trial),N-acetylcysteine(NAC) in three trials,and allopurinol in six *** group of patients treated with NAC received different doses; either oral or intravenous,and allopurinol-treated patients received five different oral doses in two different administration *** results are expressed with raw numbers,proportions,as well as mean and standard *** incidence of pancreatitis between groups was analyzed with Pearson's χ2 test or Fisher's exact test(F).The main outcome is expressed as relative risks and 95%***:The incidence of pancreatitis in all antioxidant treatment groups was 8.6%,whereas it was 9.7% in the control *** antioxidants used were selenite,β-carotene,and pentoxifylline(each one in one trial),NAC in three trials,and allopurinol in six *** allopurinol trials,three different dosifications were used; two trials reported a low dosage(of less than 400 mg),two trials reported a moderate dose(600 mg) and the remaining two employed higher doses(more than 900 mg).Supplementation was not associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of PEP [relative risk(RR) = 0.93; 95%CI:0.82-1.06; P = 0.28].In addition,the incid

Octogenarian liver grafts:Is their use for transplant currently justified?

AIMTo analyse the impact of octogenarian donors in liver *** present a retrospective single-center study, performed between November 1996 and March 2015, that comprises a sample of 153 liver transplants. Recipients were divided into two groups according to liver donor age: recipients of donors ≤ 65 years (group A; n = 102), and recipients of donors ≥ 80 years (group B; n = 51). A comparative analysis between the groups was performed. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean values and SD, and qualitative variables as percentages. Differences in properties between qualitative variables were assessed by χ2 test. Comparison of quantitative variables was made by t-test. Graft and patient survivals were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier ***, 3 and 5-year overall patient survival was 87.3%, 84% and 75.2%, respectively, in recipients of younger grafts vs 88.2%, 84.1% and 66.4%, respectively, in recipients of octogenarian grafts (P = 0.748). One, 3 and 5-year overall graft survival was 84.3%, 83.1% and 74.2%, respectively, in recipients of younger grafts vs 84.3%, 79.4% and 64.2%, respectively, in recipients of octogenarian grafts (P = 0.524). After excluding the patients with hepatitis C virus cirrhosis (16 in group A and 10 in group B), the 1, 3 and 5-year patient (P = 0.657) and graft (P = 0.419) survivals were practically the same in both groups. We analyzed the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the glutathione-S-transferase P1 （GSTPI） rs1695 single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） in 290 patients with multiple sclerosis （MS） and in 310 healthy controls. We found no significant association between the rs1695 variant and MS. Among MS patients, there was no relationship between the rs1695 variant and either gender, clinical type of MS or the age of onset of MS.

Removal of Metribuzin by Ozonation:Effect of Initial Concentration and pH

Herbicides are chemical compounds capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of certain plants and they have been frequently detected in natural waters. Advanced treatments, including those using ozone, have been used in order to remove herbicides from different types of water with good treatment efficiency. The efficiency of ozonation, an oxidative process, in the removal of persistent compounds is affected by several factors, such as pH and the concentration of the contaminant. The compound metribuzin, the herbicide investigated in this study, is persistent and mobile in the environment with a high potential for transport through soils and thus it can reach the groundwater. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different pH conditions (2.5, 5.5 and 12.0) and initial concentrations of metribuzin (20, 50 and 100 ppm) on the removal of this herbicide from water using the ozonation process. In order to identify the possible effect of these two variables on the ozonation treatment, the concentration of metribuzin was determined by spectrophotometry UV-vis spectrophotometer. The results were used to evaluate the best conditions for the ozonation treatment. The ozonation conditions which provided the highest metribuzin removal efficiency (86.5% ± 0.3%) were pH 12.0 and an initial metribuzin concentration of 20 ppm. The findings indicate that oxidation with ozone is effective for the removal of metribuzin from aqueous solutions under the conditions studied.

The uniparental inheritance and conserved structure of the chloroplast genome among many angiosperms makes it suitable for constructing gene lineages and inferring population histories based on these relationships. However, the analysis of a single chloroplast region to solve population issues has not yielded the desired amount of variability due to the low mutation rate. Therefore, it is necessary to screen and carefully analyze chloroplast intergenic or intronic regions to select the most appropriate for studying the genetic variability in the chloroplast genome of a particular taxon. In this context, the aim of this work was to characterize 8 regions in Calophyllum brasiliense using 11 selected primer pairs and to evaluate their usefulness for phylogeographic analysis. Intergenic spacers petA-psbJ, petG-trnP and rp132-trnL and the trnL intron demonstrated potentially informative sites. The combination of these 4 regions will allow the analysis of genetic population structure and the integration of historical aspects to inform strategies for conserving C. brasiliense, especially for highly impacted populations and those at risk of local extinction.

AIM：To assess the proportion of refractive errors in the Mexican population that visited primary care optometry clinics in fourteen states of Mexico. METHODS：Refractive data from 676 856 patients aged 6 to 90 y were collected from optometry clinics in fourteen states of Mexico between 2014 and 2015. The refractive errors were classified by the spherical equivalent（SE）, as follows：sphere＋？ cylinder. Myopia（SE〉-0.50 D）, hyperopia（SE〉＋0.50 D）, emmetropia（-0.50≤SE≤＋0.50）, and astigmatism alone（cylinder≥-0.25 D）. A negative cylinder was selected as a ***：The proportion（95% confidence interval） among all of the subjects was hyperopia 21.0%（20.9-21.0）, emmetropia 40.7%（40.5-40.8）, myopia 24.8%（24.7-24.9） and astigmatism alone 13.5%（13.4-13.5）. Myopia was the most common refractive error and frequency seemed to increase among the young population（10 to 29 years old）, however, hyperopia increased among the aging population（40 to 79 years old）, and astigmatism alone showed a decreasing trend with age（6 to 90y; from 19.7% to 10.8%）. There was a relationship between age and all refractive errors（approximately 60%, aged 50 and older）. The proportion of any clinically important refractive error was higher in males（61.2%） than in females（58.3%; P〈0.0001）. From fourteen states that collected information, the proportion of refractive error showed variability in different geographical areas of ***：Myopia is the most common refractive error in the population studied. This study provides the first data on refractive error in Mexico. Further programs and studies must be developed to address the refractive errors needs of the Mexican population.
