Characterizing the diversity and structure of host–parasite communities is crucial to understandingtheir eco-evolutionary dynamics.Malaria and related haemosporidian parasites are responsible forfitness loss and mortality in bird species worldwide.However,despite exhibiting the greatest ornithologicalbiodiversity,avian haemosporidians from Neotropical regions are quite unexplored.Here,we analyze the genetic diversity of bird haemosporidian parasites(Plasmodium andHaemoproteus)in 1,336 individuals belonging to 206 bird species to explore for differences in diversityof parasite lineages and bird species across 5 well-differentiated Peruvian ecoregions.Wedetected 70 different haemosporidian lineages infecting 74 bird species.We showed that 25 out ofthe 70 haplotypes had not been previously recorded.Moreover,we also identified 81 new host–parasite interactions representing new host records for these haemosporidian parasites.Our outcomesrevealed that the effective diversity(as well as the richness,abundance,and Shannon–Weaver index)for both birds and parasite lineages was higher in Amazon basin ecoregions.Furthermore,we also showed that ecoregions with greater diversity of bird species also had highparasite richness,hence suggesting that host community is crucial in explaining parasite richness.Generalist parasites were found in ecoregions with lower bird diversity,implying that the abundanceand richness of hosts may shape the exploitation strategy followed by haemosporidian parasites.These outcomes reveal that Neotropical region is a major reservoir of unidentified haemosporidianlineages.Further studies analyzing host distribution and specificity of these parasites inthe tropics will provide important knowledge about phylogenetic relationships,phylogeography,and patterns of evolution and distribution of haemosporidian parasites.

Soil under dead or live organic matter systems:Effect of European shag(Phalacrocorax aristotelis L.)nesting on soil nematodes and nutrient mineralization

Here we studied whether soil systems differ if they are under the influence of live(plants)or dead organic matter systems(nest)in terms of C and N mineralization,microbiological characteristics and nematode trophic group structure.We analyzed physicochemical and microbiological properties of soils inside and outside nests of the European shag(Phalacrocorax aristotelis L.)on the Cies Islands(NW Spain).We sampled fresh soil below dead(nests)and live organic matter(plants)(paired samples,n=7).Soil of nests had lower organic matter and higher electric conductivity and dissolved organic C and extractable N contents than the soil of plants.Microbial biomass and activity were greater in soil of nests than in soil of plants.The abundance of nematode trophic groups(bacterivores,fungivores,omnivores and herbivores)differred between soils of nests and plants,and the soil of plants supported a more abundant and diverse nematode community.The present results points to that source of organic matter promote differences in the decomposer community,being more efficient in soil of nests because C mineralization is greater.Further,this occurred independently of the complexity of the systems,higher in the soil of plants with more groups of nematodes.

Areas of research and clinical approaches to the study of liver abscess

AIM To analyze the research activity on liver abscess(LA) and identify the main topic clusters in the area. METHODS We identified all documents using the medical subject heading "LA" indexed in the MEDLINE database between 2001 and 2015. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis, characterizing the evolution of scientific activity, the publication types of the documents, the document categories of clinical interest(case reports, clinical trials, evaluation studies, meta-analysis, observational studies, practice guidelines and validation studies) and the geographic distribution of the research. We also carried out an analysis of networks and research clusters in order to identify the main topic areas of research.RESULTS Our search yielded a total of 1278 documents, showing a stable scientific production over the study period and a marked multidisciplinary nature. The research was dominated by case reports(65.9% of the documents analyzed). In terms of geographic distribution, researchers from the United States led in the number of signatures(n = 229), followed by those from Taiwan(n= 185), India(n = 145), Japan(n = 144), South Korea(n = 100), and China(n = 84). With regard to amebic LA, the top-producing countries were India and Mexico(n = 69 each), followed by the United States(n = 29). In the case of pyogenic LA, Taiwan Residents researchers led scientific production(n = 71), followed by the United States(n = 39) and China(n = 29). The most active areas of research in the field are diagnosis via computerized tomography scan, differential diagnosis with regard to liver cancer, treatment with antimicrobial agents, and Klebsiella infections(including bacteremia).CONCLUSION Clinical case reports associated with diagnosis and treatment are the main topic of study, highlighting the importance of this document type in advancing knowledge.

Diurnal Dependence of Growth Responses to Shade in Arabidopsis： Role of Hormone, Clock, and Light Signaling

We investigated the diurnal dependence of the hypocotyl-growth responses to shade under sunlight-night cycles in Arabidopsis thaliana. Afternoon shade events promoted hypocotyl growth, while morning shade was ineffective. The Ihy-D, elf3, lux, pif4 pifS, tocl, and quadruple della mutants retained the response to afternoon shade and the lack of response to morning shade while the Ihyccal mutant responded to both morning and afternoon shade. ThephyB mutant, plants overexpressing the multidrug resistance-like membrane protein ABCB19, and the iaa17/axr3 loss-of-function mutant failed to respond to shade. Transient exposure of sunlight-grown seedlings to synthetic auxin in the afternoon caused a stronger promotion of hypocotyl growth than morning treatments. The promotion of hypocotyl growth by afternoon shade or afternoon auxin required light perceived by phytochrome A or cryptochromes during the previous hours of the photoperiod. Although the ELF4-ELF3-LUX complex, PIF4, PIF5, and DELLA are key players in the generation of diurnal hypocotyl-growth patterns, they exert a minor role in the control of the diurnal pattern of growth responses to shade. We conclude that the strong diurnal dependency of hypocotyl-growth responses to shade relates to the balance between the antagonistic actions of LHY-CCA1 and a light-derived signal.

The connection of resources, data, and knowledge through communication technology plays a vital role in current collaborative design methodologies and Product Lifecycle Management （PLM） systems, as these elements act as channels for information and meaning. Despite significant advances in the area of PLM, most communication tools are used as separate services that are disconnected from existing development environments. Consequently, during a communication session, the specific elements being discussed are usually not linked to the context of the discussion, which may result in important information getting lost or becoming difficult to access. In this paper, we present a method to add synchronous communication functionality to a PLM system based on annotated information embedded in the CAD model. This approach provides users a communication channel that is built directly into the CAD interface and is valuable when individuals need to be contacted regarding the annotated aspects of a CAD model. We present the architecture of a new system and its integration with existing PLM systems, and describe the implementation details of an annotation-based video conferencing module for a commercial CAD application.

The variability of juvenile dispersal in an opportunistic raptor

The juvenile dispersal of raptors is a crucial stage that stretches from parental independence to the establishment of the first breeding area.Between 2012 and 2020,44 juvenile red kites Milvus milvus from the Spanish breeding population were tagged using GPS telemetry to study their dispersal.Juveniles left the parental breeding area at the end of their first summer and performed wandering movements throughout the Iberian Peninsula,returning to the parental breeding area the following year,repeating the same pattern until they settled in their first breeding area.We analyzed the mean distance from the nest,the maximum reached distances,and the traveled distances(daily and hourly)during the first 2 years of dispersal and compared them.Despite the high individual variability,variables describing the dispersal movements of juveniles showed a decreasing trend during the second dispersal year:80% of individuals reached a shorter maximum distance in the second year,70% decreased their mean distance to the nest,65% decreased their hourly traveled distances,and 50% decreased their daily traveled distances.On the other hand,the red kites usually combined wandering movements with the establishment of temporary settlement areas(TSA).The average duration of settlement in the TSAs was 75±40 days(up to 182 days)and was located at 182±168 km from the nest.In those areas,juveniles used 781.0±1895.0 km^(2)(KDE 95%).Some of the TSAs were used by several individuals,which suggests that these areas might be good targets for conservation in future management plans.

Home range variability and philopatry in Cinereous vultures(Aegypius monachus)breeding in Iberia

Large scavengers are strongly dependent on environmental conditions and carrion distribution and abundance,so season and breeding-related factors may influence the spatial ecology of species such as the Cinereous Vulture(Aegypius monachus),the largest European raptor.Iberia holds one of the biggest populations worldwide,but some aspects of the spatial ecology of the species in this region remain unknown.In this study,17 adult Cinereous Vultures were GPS-tracked in order to study their spatial ecology during the adult phase.The average monthly home ranges(95%Kernel Density Estimation,KDE)and core areas(50%KDE)were 6543±19,935 km^(2)and 1174±4004 km^(2),respectively.The average monthly home range fidelity ranged between 50 and 73%.Differences in movement-related variables between the seasonal periods(incubation,chick-rearing and non-breeding)were found.During the chick-rearing period,the monthly accumulated distance was higher than during the other periods:3316±1108(chick-rearing)vs.1621±622(incubation)vs.1726±1159 km per month(nonbreeding).Additionally,large home range sizes were more frequent during the chick-rearing period.There are two likely causes for these seasonal differences.Firstly,chick-rearing entails a higher energetic expenditure by the parental individuals in foraging activities,so larger movements and foraging areas are expected during this period.Secondly,the flight is favoured during spring and summer due to environmental conditions.Matching chick-rearing and warm months is a great evolutionary advantage for soaring-gliding raptors,as it allows them to cover larger areas with low energy expenditure.Furthermore,six individuals tagged as nestlings highlight the philopatric behaviour of the species:vultures settle their breeding areas 54±51 km from their natal nest(range=9–138 km).

Optimization of high-speed railway pantographs for improving pantograph-catenary contact

A crucial system for the operation of high-speed trains is the pantograph catenary interface as it is the sole responsible to deliver electrical power to the train. Being the catenary a stationary system with a long lifespan it is also less likely to be redesigned and upgraded than the pantographs that fit the train vehicles. This letter proposes an optimization procedure for the improvement of the contact quality between the pantograph and the catenary solely based on the redesign of the pantograph head suspension characteristics. A pantograph model is defined and validated against experimental dynamic characteristics of existing pantographs. An optimization strategy based on the use of a global optimization method, to find the vicinity of the optimal solution, followed by the use of a deterministic optimization algorithm, to fine tune the optimal solution, is applied here. The spring stiffness, damping characteristics and bow mass are the design variables used for the pantograph optimization. The objective of the optimal problem is the minimization of the standard deviation of the contact force history, which is the most important quantity to define the contact quality. The pantograph head suspension characteristics are allowed to vary within technological realistic limits. It is found that current high-speed railway pantographs have a limited potential for mechanical improvements, not exceeding 10% 15% on the decrease of the standard deviation of the contact force. Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy with left ventricular involvement versus ischemic heart disease: lessons learned from the family study and the reviewed autopsy of a young male

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and often non-thrombosed severe coronary stenoses with or without myocardial scars are detected.Left dominant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (LDAC) is a life-threating rare disease which has been more thoroughly studied in the last 10years.The macroscopic study of an SCD victim was conducted and re-evaluated 9years later.The cardiological work-up in his firstdegree relatives initially comprised an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram.When they were re-evaluted 9years later,a cardiac magnetic resonance,an ECG-monitoring,an exercise testing and a genetic study were performed and the pedigree was extended accordingly.In 2008,an IHD was suspected in the sports-triggered SCD of a 37-year-old man upon the postmortem (75% stenosis of the left main and circumflex coronary arteries;the subepicardial left ventricular fibrofatty infiltration with mild myocardial degeneration was assumed to be a past myocardial infarction).No cardiomyopathy was identified in any of the two proband's sisters.Nine years thereafter,distant relatives were diagnosed with LDAC due to a pathogenic desmoplakin mutation.The reanalysis of the two sisters showed ventricular arrhythmias in one of them without structural heart involvement and the reviewed postmortem of the proband was reclassified as LDAC based on the fibrofatty infiltration;both were mutation carriers.The completion of the family study on 19 family members yielded one SCD due to LDAC (the proband),three living patients diagnosed with LDAC (two with a defibrillator),one mutation carrier without structural ventricular involvement,and 14 healthy relatives (who were discharged) with a very good co-segregation of the mutation.Although rare,LDAC exists and sometimes its differential diagnosis with iHD has to be faced.Modifying previous postmortem misdiagnoses can help family screening to further prevent SCDs.

The species within Xenarthra(sloths,anteaters,and armadillos)are quintessential South American mammals.Of the three groups,Vermilingua(anteaters)contains the fewest extant and paleontological species.Here,we sampled and sequenced the entire mitochondrial genomes(mitogenomes)of two Tamandua species(Tamandua tetradactyla and T.mexicana)(n=74)from Central and South America,as well as Myrmecophaga tridactyla(n=41)from South America.Within Tamandua,we detected three different haplogroups.The oldest(THI)contained many specimens with the T.tetradactyla morphotype(but also several with the T.mexicana morphotype)and originated in southeastern South America(currently Uruguay)before moving towards northern South America,where the THII haplogroup originated.THII primarily contained specimens with the T.mexicana morphotype(but also several with the T.tetradactyla morphotype)and was distributed in Central America,Colombia,and Ecuador.THI and THII yielded a genetic distance of 4%.THII originated in either northern South America or“in situ”in Central America with haplogroup THIII,which consisted of~50%T.mexicana and 50%T.tetradactyla phenotypes.THIII was mostly located in the same areas as THII,i.e.,Central America,Ecuador,and Colombia,though mainly in the latter.The three haplogroups overlapped in Colombia and Ecuador.Thus,T.tetradactyla and T.mexicana were not reciprocally monophyletic.For this reason,we considered that a unique species of Tamandua likely exists,i.e.,T.tetradactyla.In contrast to Tamandua,M.tridactyla did not show different morphotypes throughout its geographical range in the Neotropics.However,two very divergent genetic haplogroups(MHI and MHII),with a genetic distance of~10%,were detected.The basal haplogroup,MHI,originated in northwestern South America,whereas the more geographically derived haplogroup,MHII,overlapped with MHI,but also expanded into central and southern South America.Thus,Tamandua migrated from south to north whereas Myrmecophaga migrated from north to south.Our results also showed that tem
