This article presents a study on the structural behavior of transversely prestressed laminated timber slabs,focusing on an innovative approach:vertically misaligned *** misalignment,achieved by sliding vertically the wooden lamellae rather than aligning them,enhances the slab’s cross-section moment of inertia,thereby improving load-bearing capacity and *** involved two groups of structural size specimens:one with vertically aligned lamellae(control group)and the other with misaligned lamellae(study group).Results showed the study group exhibited 42%superior stiffness and 10%less load capacity compared to the *** typically occurred individually in the lamellae,particularly in those with defects or lower modulus of elasticity,concentrated in the middle third of the slabs’free span where tensile stresses *** a higher number of failed lamellae,the study group demonstrated promising *** of prestressing bar indicated no damage at all in the thread,suggesting potential for reducing bar *** findings offer crucial insights into applying these slabs in timber construction as well as to any kind of construction.

BACKGROUND Paracoccidioidomycosis(PCm)may involve the hepatic pedicle and peripan creatic lymph nodes,cause damage to the bile duct and manifest,exceptionally,in combination with extrahepatic cholestasis(EHC),making investigation and treatment *** To investigate the management of patients with visceral PCm admitted with *** All patients diagnosed with PCm treated in a public,tertiary teaching hospital between 1982 and 2020 were retrospectively *** also identified with EHC were allocated to two groups according to the treatment approach for the purpose of comparing clinical,laboratory,and imaging findings,resources used for etiological diagnosis,treatment results,and *** analyses were performed using the linear mixed-effects model(random and fixed effects),which was adjusted using the PROC mIXED procedure of the sAs®9.0 software,and Fisher’s exact *** Of 1645 patients diagnosed with PCm,40(2.4%)had *** these,20(50.0%)lived in the rural area and 29(72.5%)were men,with a mean age of 27.1 years(3-65 years).Jaundice as first symptom and weight loss of at least 10 kg were observed in 16 patients(40.0%),and a mass in the head of the pancreas was observed in 8(20.0%).The etiological diagnosis was made by tissue collection during surgery in 4 cases(10.0%)and by endoscopic methods in 3 cases(7.5%).Twenty-seven patients(67.5%)received drug treatment alone(Group 1),whereas 13(32.5%)underwent endoscopic and/or surgical procedures in combination with drug treatment(Group 2).EHC was significantly reduced in both groups(40.7% in Group 1,with a mean time of 3 months;and 38.4% in Group 2,with a mean time of 7.5 months),with no statistically significant difference between *** recurrence rates,associated mainly with treatment nonadherence,were similar in both groups:37% in Group 1 and 15.4% in Group *** mortality rate was 18.5% in Group 1 and 23% in Group 2,with survival estimates of 71.3% and 72.5%,respectively,with

Background: European society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy( EsGE) recommends needle-knife fstulotomy(NKF) as the preferred precut technique in cases when standard cannulation techniques fail. Despite scarce scientifc evidence, flat and diverticular papillae are thought not to be ideal for NKF, as they are associated with poor outcomes. The present study aimed to determine the outcomes of the use of NKF in relation to flat and intradiverticular papillae. methods: This prospective multicenter study enrolled consecutive patients, evidencing na?ve flat(group A, n = 49) or diverticular papilla(group B, n = 28), who underwent NKF after failure of standard cannulation techniques. Diverticular morphology was subdivided into intradiverticular(group B1, n = 14) and diverticular border papillae(group B2, n = 14), using a previously validated endoscopic classifcation of the major papilla. The success of biliary cannulation at initial endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP), overall biliary cannulation, overall cannulation time, and the rate of adverse events were assessed in the study. Results: The initial cannulation rates were 93.9%, 64.3% and 71.4% for group A, B1, and B2, respectively( P = 0.005);overall cannulation rates after a second ERCP were 98.0%, 92.9% and 85.7%, respectively( P = 0.134). Adverse events occurred in 11.7% of patients, with post-ERCP pancreatitis(PEP) being the most common adverse event(10.4%). Although there was a trend towards a higher incidence of PEP in flat papillae, univariate and multivariate analyses did not show any signifcant relationship between pancreatitis and trainee involvement, papillary morphology, nor overall cannulation time. Conclusions: Although flat papillae are associated with high success rates of biliary cannulation using NKF, the rate of PEP is not negligible. NKF is feasible in diverticular papillae, but it is associated with a modest success rate in the initial ERCP.

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, and obesity and the metabolic syndrome are risk factors for its development. One of the therapies to reduce cardiovascular risk is the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In Brazil, a source of such acid is the oil extracted from the fat of the capybara. The objective of this work is to study the effects of the capybara oil on lipid and glucose metabolism, as well as its effects on the adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling. We assessed the effects of capybara oil treatment on body mass, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, systolic blood pressure, adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling, and performed an ultrastructural evaluation of the myocardium in C57Bl/6 mice treated with high-fat diet. Treatment with capybara oil reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, and adipocyte diameter. In addition, cardiac remodeling was attenuated, preserving cardiomyocytes, increasing vascularization, reducing cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and the extracellular matrix, and preserving the morphological integrity of mitochondria. Capybara oil has several beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic system, and further studies are needed to better understand its role in the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

In this work, it is investigated the Urban Heat Island (UHI) using conservative thermodynamic variables observed by surface weather stations on the metropolitan Area of Porto (Oporto) in Portugal, under adiabatic conditions at the surface. These conditions are usually present and associated with the development of a mixture layer into the diurnal Convective Boundary Layer (CBL), which residual layer in the late afternoon defines the initial state for the development of the nocturnal UHI. Both the spatial structure and temporal variation of potential temperature and specific humidity were considered, along the hours and days of the year, from a statistical point of view, resulting in hourly climatology. Details of the hourly evolution of the meteorological variables on the Oporto surface are presented and discussed. Results show a seasonal variation of the potential temperature up to 17°C throughout the year, which is associated with horizontal thermal gradients that can control and trigger mesoscale circulations such as sea-land, urban and valley-mountain breezes.

Buds emerge from the roots of domesticated runner bean plants (Phaseolus coccineus L.) as sprouts and give the crop its persistence. This particularity of the species seems to be associated with the environment where the species was cultivated during long time. Data on regrowth traits were recorded on 70 accessions of domesticated P. coccineus after overwintering at a site in the central highlands of mexico. The characteristics recorded included fresh weight of vegetative regrowth, root length, root crown diameter, and diameter of the main root. most accessions that sprout the following spring, after the grain harvest of the previous year, come from temperate and semi-cold sites with cambisol and andosol soils in mixed Quercus pine forest and high mountain fir trees. Those that do not sprout are from sites of semiarid temperate climate, haplic phaeozem soil in shrub grasslands with deciduous broadleaved trees, and semiwarm subhumid climate, eutrophic regosol soil in deciduous broadleaved forest. Two types of roots were differentiated: branched and thickened taproots, also associated with a different climate, and the type of soil of the collection sites.

successive generalisations of the basic sEIR model have been proposed to accommodate the different needs of the organisations handling the sARs-CoV-2 epidemic and the assessment of the public health measures adopted and named under the common um-brella of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions(NPIs).so far,these generalisations have not been able to assess the ability of these measures to avoid infection by the sARs-CoV-2 and thus their contribution to contain the spread of the *** work proposes a new generalisation of sEIR model and includes a heterogeneous and age-related generation of infections that depends both on a probability that a contact generates the transmission of the disease and a contact *** results show(1)thanks to the universal wearing of facial coverings,the probability that a contact provokes the transmission of the disease was reduced by at least 50%and(2)the impact of the other NPI is so significant that otherwise Portugal would have gone into a non-sustainable situation of having 80%of its population infected in the first 300 days of the *** situation would have led to a number of deaths almost twenty times higher than the number that was actually recorded by December 26th,***,the results suggest that even if the requirement of universal wearing of facial coverings was adopted sooner jointly with closing workplaces and resorting to teleworking would have postponed the peak of the incidence,altought the epidemic path would have result in a number of infections hardly managed by the National Health ***,results confirm that(3)the health authorities adopted a conservative approach on the criteria to consider an infected individual not infective any longer;and(4)the most effective NPIs and stringency levels either impacting on self-protection against infection or reducing the contacts that would eventually result in infection are,in decreasing order of importance,the use of Facial coverings,Workplace clos
