In coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)primarily targets the respiratory system,but evidence suggests extrapulmonary organ involvement,notably in the liver.Viral RNA has been detected in hepatic tissues,and in situ hybridization revealed virions in blood vessels and endothelial cells.Electron microscopy confirmed viral particles in hepatocytes,emphasizing the need for understanding hepatotropism and direct cytopathic effects in COVID-19-related liver injury.Various factors contribute to liver injury,including direct cytotoxicity,vascular changes,inflammatory responses,immune reactions from COVID-19 and vaccinations,and druginduced liver injury.Although a typical hepatitis presentation is not widely documented,elevated liver biochemical markers are common in hospitalized COVID-19 patients,primarily showing a hepatocellular pattern of elevation.Long-term studies suggest progressive cholestasis may affect 20%of patients with chronic liver disease post-SARS-CoV-2 infection.The molecular mechanisms underlying SARS-CoV-2 infection in the liver and the resulting liver damage are complex.This“Editorial”highlights the expression of the Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 receptor in liver cells,the role of inflammatory responses,the impact of hypoxia,the involvement of the liver's vascular system,the infection of bile duct epithelial cells,the activation of hepatic stellate cells,and the contribution of monocyte-derived macrophages.It also mentions that pre-existing liver conditions can worsen the outcomes of COVID-19.Understanding the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 with the liver is still evolving,and further research is required.

Secondary forests and human-made forest gaps are conspicuous features of tropical landscapes.Yet,behavioral responses to these aspects of anthropogenically modified forests remain poorly investigated.Here,we analyze the effects of small human-made clearings and secondary forests on tropical bats by examining the guild-and species-level activity patterns of phyllostomids sampled in the Central Amazon,Brazil.Specifically,we contrast the temporal activity patterns and degree of temporal overlap of 6 frugivorous and 4 gleaning animalivorous species in old-growth forest and second-growth forest and of 4 frugivores in old-growth forest and forest clearings.The activity patterns of frugivores and gleaning animalivores did not change between old-growth forest and second-growth,nor did the activity patterns of frugivores between old-growth forest and clearings.However,at the species level,we detected significant differences for Artibeus obscurus(old-growth forest vs.second-growth)and A.concolor(old-growth forest vs.clearings).The degree of temporal overlap was greater than random in all sampled habitats.However,for frugivorous species,the degree of temporal overlap was similar between old-growth forest and second-growth;whereas for gleaning animalivores,it was lower in second-growth than in old-growth forest.On the contrary,forest clearings were characterized by increased temporal overlap between frugivores.Changes in activity patterns and temporal overlap may result from differential foraging opportunities and dissimilar predation risks.Yet,our analyses suggest that activity patterns of bats in second-growth and small forest clearings,2 of the most prominent habitats in humanized tropical landscapes,varies little from the activity patterns in old-growth forest.

The pyramid wavefront sensor(PWFS)can provide the sensitivity needed for demanding adaptive optics applications,such as imaging exoplanets using the future extremely large telescopes of over 30 m of diameter(D).However,its exquisite sensitivity has a limited linear range of operation,or dynamic range,although it can be extended through the use of beam modulation—despite sacrificing sensitivity and requiring additional optical hardware.Inspired by artificial intelligence techniques,this work proposes to train an optical layer—comprising a passive diffractive element placed at a conjugated Fourier plane of the pyramid prism—to boost the linear response of the pyramid sensor without the need for cumbersome modulation.We develop an end-2-end simulation to train the diffractive element,which acts as an optical preconditioner to the traditional least-square modal phase estimation process.Simulation results with a large range of turbulence conditions show a noticeable improvement in the aberration estimation performance equivalent to over 3λ∕D of modulation when using the optically preconditioned deep PWFS(DPWFS).Experimental results validate the advantages of using the designed optical layer,where the DPWFS can pair the performance of a traditional PWFS with 2λ∕D of modulation.Designing and adding an optical preconditioner to the PWFS is just the tip of the iceberg,since the proposed deep optics methodology can be used for the design of a completely new generation of wavefront sensors that can better fit the demands of sophisticated adaptive optics applications such as ground-to-space and underwater optical communications and imaging through scattering media.

Design and selection of advanced protection schemes have become essential for reliable and secure operation of networked microgrids.Various protection schemes that allow correct operation of microgrids have been proposed for individual systems in different topologies and connections.Nevertheless,protection schemes for networked microgrids are still in devel-opment,and further research is required to design and operate advanced protection in interconnected systems.Interconnection of these microgrids in different nodes with various intercon-nection technologies increases fault occurrence and complicates protection operation.This paper aims to point out challenges in developing protection for networked microgrids,potential solutions,and research areas that need to be addressed for their development.First,this article presents a systematic analysis of different microgrid clusters proposed since 2016,including several architectures of networked microgrids,operation modes,components,and utilization of renewable sources,which have not been widely explored in previous review papers.Second,the paper presents a discussion on protection systems currently available for microgrid clusters,current challenges,and solutions that have been proposed for these systems.Finally,it discusses the trend of protection schemes in networked microgrids and presents some conclusions related to implementation.IndexTerms—Adaptive eprotection,microgrid cluster,microgrid,multiple microgrid,networked microgrid,real-time simulation,smart grid.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection poses a global health concern without a definitive cure;however,antiviral medications can effectively suppress viral replication.This study delves into the intricate interplay between lipid metabo-lism and HBV replication,implicating molecular mechanisms such as the stearoyl coenzyme A desaturase 1 autophagy pathway,SAC1-like phosphatidylinositol phosphatase,and galectin-9 mediated selective autophagy of viral core proteins in regulating HBV replication.Within lipid droplets,perilipin 2(PLIN2)emerges as a pivotal guardian,with its overexpression protecting against autophagy and downregulation stimulating triglyceride catabolism through the autophagy pathway.This editorial discusses the correlation between hepatic steatosis and HBV replication,emphasizing the role of PLIN2 in this process.The study underscores the multifaceted roles of lipid metabolism,autophagy,and perilipins in HBV replication,shedding light on potential therapeutic avenues.

Utilization of RNA sequencing to investigate olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps:A pilot study

Objectives:Prior research on olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)has focused on patients with polyps and suggests that direct inflammation of the olfactory cleft mucosa plays a contributory role.The purpose of this study was to evaluate gene expression in superior turbinate mucosal specimens,comparing normosmic and dysosmic CRS patients without polyps(CRSsNP).methods:Tissue samples were obtained from the superior turbinates of patients with CRSsNP at the time of endoscopic sinus surgery.Samples subsequently underwent RNA sequencing and functional analysis to investigate biological pathways associated with differentially expressed genes between dysosmic(n=7)and normosmic(n=4)patients.Results:Differential gene expression analysis comparing dysosmic and normosmic CRSsNP patients showed upregulation of 563 genes and downregulation of 327 genes.Using stringent criteria for multiple comparisons,one upregulated gene(Immediate Early Response 3[IER3])had an false discovery rate(FDR)correction adjustedP value considered statistically significant(Pme functional analysis revealed eight biological pathways significantly different between dysosmic and normosmic patients(Pmation regarding biological pathways and genes involved in olfactory dysfunction.This study supports literature suggesting that Type 2 inflammation may play a role in olfactory dysfunction in at least some patients with CRSsNP.This study also prompts questions regarding the role of IL-10,rhodopsin-like receptors,andIER3 in the pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction.

metamizole(mZ)is a widely used anti-inflammatory drug.Due to its common use,this contaminant is found in sewage and rivers.In order to reduce the contamination produced by the mZ,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic composite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)perovskite.Those nanoparticles had a microplate-like morphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm according to the analysis of microscopy.The photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a removal efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO composite was employed for the photocatalytic degradation of mZ,a maximum degradation of 92.5%was obtained.The influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of mZ after 240 min of UV-Vis irradiation.moreover,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO composites and found that the maximum loss of degradation was 5%.Furthermore,scavenger experiments demonstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are formed during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of mZ.Additionally,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Raman analysis demonstrated the formation of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recombination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the mZ.Thus,the studies performed in this work proved that composites made with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharmaceutical compounds.

Ephedroid macrofossils have been widely documented in Cretaceous deposits,including numerous from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of NE China.However,few ephedroid macrofossils have been reported from South America.Herein,we describe a new plant of the family Ephedraceae,Arlenea delicata gen.et sp.nov.,from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation of the Araripe Basin,Northeast Brazil,based on the vegetative and reproductive structures.It has the typical morphological characteristics of ephedroid plants,including fertile reproductive branches,opposite phyllotaxy,terminal female cones,a sympodial branching system,longitudinally striated internodes,and swollen nodes.Our new finding is unusual in having inner chlamydosperms subtended by two pairs of bracts,reproductive units connected to branches through swollen receptacles and a smooth seed surface.This new ephedroid taxon from the Crato Formation increases our understanding of plant diversity of this group during the Early Cretaceous.Furthermore,the general morphology(fleshy bracts and enlarged receptacles)of this new fossil discovery indicates that seeds of this plant may have been dispersed by animals such as pterosaurs(mainly the Tapejaridae)and birds(Enantiornithes and Ornituromorpha).If true,this would explain the cosmopolitan distribution of Ephedraceae in the Lower Cretaceous.

Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabling medical condition generally caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial trauma is accompanied by a set of biological mechanisms directed to ameliorate neural damage but also exacerbate initial damage(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also systemic consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after SCI,explaining the progression and detrimental consequences related to this condition.Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology(PNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and explore the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a whole.The initial traumatic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and multisystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and well-being.In the present review,we will explore the most important local and systemic consequences of SCI from a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how all these mechanisms are interconnected.Finally,potential clinical approaches derived from this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim to develop integrative therapies to maximize the clinical management of these patients.
