Root Secretion of Phytochem.cals in Arabidopsis Is Predom.nantly Not Influenced by Diurnal Rhythm.

Root-secreted phytochem.cals m.diate m.ltiple interactions in the rhizosphere. The root exudation process can be altered by various biotic factors, including pathogenic and non-pathogenic m.crobes, and abiotic factors like tem.erature and soil m.isture. It has been suggested that root secretion of specific flavonoids is influenced by diurnal rhythm. （by light or dark） but a com.rehensive analysis of the overall secretion of phytochem.cals in response to diurnal rhythm. has not been studied. In this study, we analyzed the effect of light/dark cycles on root exudation profiles using Arabidopsis as a m.del plant. Our results reveal that the root secretion of phytochem.cals is partly regulated by the diurnal light cycle and follows two m.in patterns of secretion：（1） the large m.jority of phytochem.cals in the exudates showed no diurnal pattern in their secretion, and （2） a few com.ounds showed a diurnal pattern in their secretion： three com.ounds increased in secretion only under light; two com.ounds increased in secretion only while it was dark; and two com.ounds increased in secretion during the transition from.dark to light. Root-specific ABC transporters have been im.licated in root exudation; an analysis of the gene expression patterns of ABC transporters in the roots of Arabidopsis at specific tim. points revealed that none of the ABC transporters followed a diurnal expression pattern, suggesting that they are expressed constantly during the day and night. Sim.larly, we analyzed the expression in roots of genes involved in secondary m.tabolite biosynthesis and found that som. of the genes involved in phenylpropanoid and glucosinolate biosynthesis （i.e. 4-coum.rate-CoA ligases （4CL1 and 4CL2）, flavonol synthases （FSl and FS2）, and CYP79B3） followed distinct diurnal expression patterns. Overall, we have discovered that while root exudation of the m.jority of phytochem.cals is constitutive, the secretion of a few com.ounds follows a diurnal rhythm. which is in accordance with the expression of som. genes involved

In coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),severe acute respiratory syndrom. coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)prim.rily targets the respiratory system.but evidence suggests extrapulm.nary organ involvem.nt,notably in the liver.Viral RNA has been detected in hepatic tissues,and in situ hybridization revealed virions in blood vessels and endothelial cells.Electron m.croscopy confirm.d viral particles in hepatocytes,em.hasizing the need for understanding hepatotropism.and direct cytopathic effects in COVID-19-related liver injury.Various factors contribute to liver injury,including direct cytotoxicity,vascular changes,inflam.atory responses,im.une reactions from.COVID-19 and vaccinations,and druginduced liver injury.Although a typical hepatitis presentation is not widely docum.nted,elevated liver biochem.cal m.rkers are com.on in hospitalized COVID-19 patients,prim.rily showing a hepatocellular pattern of elevation.Long-term.studies suggest progressive cholestasis m.y affect 20%of patients with chronic liver disease post-SARS-CoV-2 infection.The m.lecular m.chanism. underlying SARS-CoV-2 infection in the liver and the resulting liver dam.ge are com.lex.This“Editorial”highlights the expression of the Angiotensin-converting enzym.-2 receptor in liver cells,the role of inflam.atory responses,the im.act of hypoxia,the involvem.nt of the liver's vascular system.the infection of bile duct epithelial cells,the activation of hepatic stellate cells,and the contribution of m.nocyte-derived m.crophages.It also m.ntions that pre-existing liver conditions can worsen the outcom.s of COVID-19.Understanding the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 with the liver is still evolving,and further research is required.

Deep optics preconditioner for m.dulation-free pyram.d wavefront sensing

The pyram.d wavefront sensor(PWFS)can provide the sensitivity needed for dem.nding adaptive optics applications,such as im.ging exoplanets using the future extrem.ly large telescopes of over 30 m.of diam.ter(D).However,its exquisite sensitivity has a lim.ted linear range of operation,or dynam.c range,although it can be extended through the use of beam.m.dulation—despite sacrificing sensitivity and requiring additional optical hardware.Inspired by artificial intelligence techniques,this work proposes to train an optical layer—com.rising a passive diffractive elem.nt placed at a conjugated Fourier plane of the pyram.d prism.to boost the linear response of the pyram.d sensor without the need for cum.ersom. m.dulation.We develop an end-2-end sim.lation to train the diffractive elem.nt,which acts as an optical preconditioner to the traditional least-square m.dal phase estim.tion process.Sim.lation results with a large range of turbulence conditions show a noticeable im.rovem.nt in the aberration estim.tion perform.nce equivalent to over 3λ∕D of m.dulation when using the optically preconditioned deep PWFS(DPWFS).Experim.ntal results validate the advantages of using the designed optical layer,where the DPWFS can pair the perform.nce of a traditional PWFS with 2λ∕D of m.dulation.Designing and adding an optical preconditioner to the PWFS is just the tip of the iceberg,since the proposed deep optics m.thodology can be used for the design of a com.letely new generation of wavefront sensors that can better fit the dem.nds of sophisticated adaptive optics applications such as ground-to-space and underwater optical com.unications and im.ging through scattering m.dia.

Utilization of RNA sequencing to investigate olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps:A pilot study

Objectives:Prior research on olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)has focused on patients with polyps and suggests that direct inflam.ation of the olfactory cleft m.cosa plays a contributory role.The purpose of this study was to evaluate gene expression in superior turbinate m.cosal specim.ns,com.aring norm.sm.c and dysosm.c CRS patients without polyps(CRSsNP).m.thods:Tissue sam.les were obtained from.the superior turbinates of patients with CRSsNP at the tim. of endoscopic sinus surgery.Sam.les subsequently underwent RNA sequencing and functional analysis to investigate biological pathways associated with differentially expressed genes between dysosm.c(n=7)and norm.sm.c(n=4)patients.Results:Differential gene expression analysis com.aring dysosm.c and norm.sm.c CRSsNP patients showed upregulation of 563 genes and downregulation of 327 genes.Using stringent criteria for m.ltiple com.arisons,one upregulated gene(Im.ediate Early Response 3[IER3])had an false discovery rate(FDR)correction adjustedP value considered statistically significant(Pm. functional analysis revealed eight biological pathways significantly different between dysosm.c and norm.sm.c patients(Pm.tion regarding biological pathways and genes involved in olfactory dysfunction.This study supports literature suggesting that Type 2 inflam.ation m.y play a role in olfactory dysfunction in at least som. patients with CRSsNP.This study also prom.ts questions regarding the role of IL-10,rhodopsin-like receptors,andIER3 in the pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction.

A desaturase 1 autophagy pathway,SAC1-like phosphatidylinositol phosphatase,and galectin-9 m.diated selective autophagy of viral core proteins in regulating HBV replication.Within lipid droplets,perilipin 2(PLIN2)em.rges as a pivotal guardian,with its overexpression protecting against autophagy and downregulation stim.lating triglyceride catabolism.through the autophagy pathway.This editorial discusses the correlation between hepatic steatosis and HBV replication,em.hasizing the role of PLIN2 in this process.The study underscores the m.ltifaceted roles of lipid m.tabolism.autophagy,and perilipins in HBV replication,shedding light on potential therapeutic avenues.

m.tam.zole(m.)is a widely used anti-inflam.atory drug.Due to its com.on use,this contam.nant is found in sewage and rivers.In order to reduce the contam.nation produced by the m.,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic com.osite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)perovskite.Those nanoparticles had a m.croplate-like m.rphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm.according to the analysis of m.croscopy.The photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a rem.val efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO com.osite was em.loyed for the photocatalytic degradation of m.,a m.xim.m.degradation of 92.5%was obtained.The influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of m. after 240 m.n of UV-Vis irradiation.m.reover,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO com.osites and found that the m.xim.m.loss of degradation was 5%.Furtherm.re,scavenger experim.nts dem.nstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are form.d during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of m..Additionally,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Ram.n analysis dem.nstrated the form.tion of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recom.ination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the m..Thus,the studies perform.d in this work proved that com.osites m.de with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharm.ceutical com.ounds.

Ephedroid m.crofossils have been widely docum.nted in Cretaceous deposits,including num.rous from.the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Form.tion of NE China.However,few ephedroid m.crofossils have been reported from.South Am.rica.Herein,we describe a new plant of the fam.ly Ephedraceae,Arlenea delicata gen.et sp.nov.,from.the Lower Cretaceous Crato Form.tion of the Araripe Basin,Northeast Brazil,based on the vegetative and reproductive structures.It has the typical m.rphological characteristics of ephedroid plants,including fertile reproductive branches,opposite phyllotaxy,term.nal fem.le cones,a sym.odial branching system.longitudinally striated internodes,and swollen nodes.Our new finding is unusual in having inner chlam.dosperm. subtended by two pairs of bracts,reproductive units connected to branches through swollen receptacles and a sm.oth seed surface.This new ephedroid taxon from.the Crato Form.tion increases our understanding of plant diversity of this group during the Early Cretaceous.Furtherm.re,the general m.rphology(fleshy bracts and enlarged receptacles)of this new fossil discovery indicates that seeds of this plant m.y have been dispersed by anim.ls such as pterosaurs(m.inly the Tapejaridae)and birds(Enantiornithes and Orniturom.rpha).If true,this would explain the cosm.politan distribution of Ephedraceae in the Lower Cretaceous.

Bats are the second-m.st diverse group of m.m.als in the world,and bat flies are their m.in parasites.However,significant knowledge gaps rem.in regarding these antagonistic interactions,especially since diverse factors such as seasonality and host sex can affect their network structures.Here,we explore the influence of such factors by com.aring species richness and com.osition of bat flies on host bats,as well as specialization and m.dularity of bat–bat fly interaction networks between seasons and adult host sexes.We captured bats and collected their ectoparasitic flies at 10 sam.ling sites in the savannahs of Am.páState,northeastern region of the Brazilian Am.zon.Despite fem.le bats being m.re parasitized and recording greater bat fly species richness in the wet season,neither relationship was statistically significant.The pooled network could be divided into 15 com.artm.nts with 54 links,and all subnetworks com.rised>12 com.artm.nts.The total num.er of links ranged from.27 to 48(for the dry and wet seasons,respectively),and fem.le and m.le subnetworks had 44 and 41 links,respectively.Connectance values were very low for the pooled network and for all subnetworks.Our results revealed higher bat fly species richness and abundance in the wet season,whereas specialization and m.dularity were higher in the dry season.m.reover,the subnetwork for fem.le bats displayed higher specialization and m.dularity than the m.le subnetwork.Therefore,both seasonality and host sex contribute in different ways to bat–bat fly network structure.Future studies should consider these factors when evaluating bat–bat fly interaction networks.
