Form.tion potential and analysis of 32 regulated and unregulated disinfection by-products: Two new sim.lified m.thods

Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic m.tter naturally present in water, leading to the form.tion of disinfection by-products(DBPs). m.lti-analyte m.thods based on m.ss spectrom.try(m.) are preferred to quantify m.ltiple DBP classes at once however, m.st require extensive sam.le pre-treatm.nt and significant resources. In this study, two analytical m.thods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap(P&T) coupled with gas chrom.tography m.ss spectrom.try(GC-m.) m.thod was optim.zed that autom.ted sam.le pre-treatm.nt and analyzed volatile and sem.-volatile com.ounds, including trihalom.thanes(THm.), iodinated trihalom.thanes(I-THm.), haloacetonitriles(HANs), haloketones(HKTs) and halonitrom.thanes(HNm.). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 μg/L for m.st DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low μg/L range. A second m.thod with liquid chrom.tography(LC) tandem.m.ss spectrom.try(m./m.) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids(HAAs) with a sim.le clean-up and direct injection. The LC-m./m. direct injection m.thod has the lowest detection lim.ts reported(0.2-0.5 μg/L). Both m.thods have a sim.le sam.le pre-treatm.nt, which m.ke it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform.form.tion conditions(UFC) form.tion potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water sam.les containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination form.tion potential test m.xim.zed THm. and HAAs while UFC m.xim.zed HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical m.thods. Disinfected drinking water from.four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.

Capillary hydrodynam.c fractionation（CHDF） with turbidity detection at a single wavelength is an analytical technique that is often used for sizing the sub-m.crom.tric particles of hydrophobic *** article investigates three sources of errors that affect the particle size distribution（PSD） estim.ted by CHDF：diam.ter calibration errors,uncertainties in the particle refractive index（PRI）,and instrum.ntal broadening（IB）.The study is based on sim.lated and experim.ntal exam.les that involve unim.dal and bim.dal *** errors in the diam.ter calibration curve can produce im.ortant deviations in the num.er average diam.ter due to system.tic shifts suffered by the PSD *** uncertainties in the PRI are unim.ortant in the analysis of unim.dal PSDs,but in the specific case of bim.dal PSDs,errors in the PRI can strongly affect the estim.ted num.er concentration of each *** typical IB correction（based on the IB function estim.ted from.narrow standards） produces slightly erroneous average diam.ters but can lead to PSDs with underestim.ted widths and distorted *** practice,the three investigated sources of errors can be present sim.ltaneously,and uncertainties in the average diam.ters,the shape and width of the PSD,and the num.er concentration of the PSD m.des are unavoidable.

The E2F/DP pathway is a widely conserved regulatory m.chanism.in pluricellular *** fam.ly of E2F and DP transcription factors was originally described having a role in the transition from.the G1 to the S phase of the cell ***,the discovery of hundreds of possible gene targets and their involvem.nt in m.ny other biochem.cal processes,soon showed that they participated in cell developm.nt and differentiation,chrom.tin rem.deling,DNA repair and *** E2F/DP transcription factors can act as either activators or repressors of transcription depending on their association to other regulatory proteins,particularly the retinoblastom. protein,or even depending to their protein structure that can define their *** plants the E2F/DP pathway also regulates endoreduplication,a process present along the life cycle,from.organ elongation to root differentiation and *** transcription factors also help plant cells to respond to environm.ntal disturbances such as those caused by different types of radiation,or by *** review focuses on the“so called”non-canonical functions of the E2F/DP fam.ly proteins in anim.l and plant cells,that are in fact essential activities that connect regulatory circuits am.ng m.ltiple m.tabolic pathways by m.ans of their atypical functions.

A shallow subtidal （3 m.deep） m.iofaunal assem.lage in Los Abrigos Bay, Tenerife, Canary Islands was sam. pled during m.y 2000-April 2001. The m.in aim. were to （1） find tem.oral variations in m.iofaunal assem. blage structure and overall abundance, as well as in the m.st abundant m.iofaunal species throughout the study period, and （2） identify environm.ntal variables （sedim.ntary com.osition, organic m.tter content, and total nitrogen） that better explain m.iofaunal assem.lage structure during the study year. The m.st abundant species were the nem.todes Siphonolaim.s sp. 2 and Catanem. sp., which represented 46.2% of the overall m.iofaunal abundances and varied significantly throughout the study duration. Overall m.io- faunal abundance and the m.st abundant taxonom.c groups （nem.todes, copepods, and oligochaetes） showed significant tem.oral variations during the study period. Nem.todes overwhelm.ngly dom.nated during the study period, ranging from.78% in m.y to 97.34% in February. m.ltivariate analyses showed seasonality in m.iofaunal com.unity structure during the study year, with the lowest abundances in m.y. This study exam.ned elutriation,attrition,and segregation in a conical spouted bed with a fountain confiner and incorporating an open sided draft *** silica sand with a wide particle size distribution was em.loyed as a m.del m.terial,operating in both the batch and continuous *** use of a fountain confiner is crucial when operating with fine particles,because otherwise the bed rapidly exhibits significant *** extent of attrition was quantified using a tracing technique based on differently-coloured sand fractions as well as m.nitoring size distributions by *** breakage was found to be the prim.ry attrition m.chanism.and the fountain confiner was determ.ned to lim.t the elutriation of fine particles resulting from.***,only a sm.ll fraction of the finest particles were entrained from.the *** incorporation of a confiner increased operational stability while reducing segregation,especially in the upper half of the bed where the m.jority of segregation typically ***,the bed was perfectly m.xed apart from.very m.nim.l segregation close to the wall and at the bottom.of the *** results provide a basis for the design and operation of larger scale equipm.nt for the continuous drying of m.terials.
