Understanding the factors shaping species＇ distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aim. were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species m.y vary spatially and/or m.y depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discrim.nate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estim.ted with the instability index included in the R pack- age SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes： 1） each river basin where the species is present （local）; 2） all river basins where the species is present （regional）; and 3） the whole Earth （global）. We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclim.tic and topographic variables. Factors associated with tem.era- ture and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the sm.ller considered extent. Altitude and a m.x of factors associated with tem.erature and precipitation were m.re im.ortant when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the im.ortance of factors, both between species and within species and from.region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in im.ortance toward the equator.

The quality and coverage of the available taxonom.cal and geographical inform.tion and the recognition that diversity is m.lti-faceted are two m.in factors that hinder to understand the spatial and tem.oral variations of biodiversity. In this study, we aim.to quantify the global distribution of five diversity com.onents used to assess freshwater fish diversity in river basins around the world. The m.ltidim.nsional character of these diversity com.onents was estim.ted and the so obtained diversity dim.nsions m.pped. This was done taking into account those well-surveyed basins discrim.nated by considering collector’s curves, and additionally by controlling for the effect of survey effort on all considered diversity com.onents. A total of 1,472,109 occurrence records were analysed, corresponding to 17,292 species of freshwater fishes. Five diversity com.onents were considered: functional richness, species richness, taxonom.c diversity, and two rarity m.asures. Well-surveyed river basins were discrim.nated using accum.lation curves. The effects of survey biases and knowledge gaps were m.nim.zed by determ.ning the relationship of each com.onent with the com.leteness values calculated for each river basin. The geographical pattern derived from.raw data is skewed by the unequal knowledge available, and all diversity com.onents were positively correlated with com.leteness values. The first dim.nsion described the association between species richness and functional diversity. The second dim.nsion represented rarity and taxonom.c diversity. The congruence between species richness and functional diversity suggests that ecosystem.functions increase with the num.er of fish species present in river basins and that a decrease in species richness m.y involve a loss of functionality. The levels of rarity and taxonom.c diversity of m.ny species-poor basins found in arid and cold regions suggest that the distinctiveness of their freshwater fishes is prim.rily a consequence of how isol

We propose a realistic topological p-n junction （TPNJ） by m.tching two Bi2Se3 （0001） slabs with opposite arrangem.nts of planar twin boundary defects. The atom.stic m.deling of such a device leads to dislocation defects in the hexagonal lattice in several quintuple layers. Nevertheless, total energy calculations reveal that the interface relaxes, yielding a sm.oth geom.trical transition that preserves the nearest-neighbors fcc-type geom.try throughout these defect layers. The electronic, m.gnetic, and transport properties of the junction have then been calculated at the ab initio level under open boundary conditions, i.e., em.loying a thin-film.geom.try that is infinite along the electron transport direction. Indeed, a p-n junction is obtained with a built-in potential as large as 350 m.V. The calculations further reveal the spin texture across the interface with unprecedented detail. As the m.in result, we obtain non-negligible transm.ssion probabilities around the F point, which involve an electron spin-flip process while crossing the interface.

The strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo L.） is an underutilized, drought tolerant, fire resistant species with a south western distribution in Europe, and with ecological and putative socio-econom.cal im.act in Portugal and m.diterranean countries. Our aim.was to develop an appropriate set of m.lecular m.rkers to enable genetic diversity to be assessed and to fingerprint Arbutus unedo genotypes for breeding and conservation purposes in Portugal. Twenty-seven trees from.a broad geographic range were screened with 20 random.am.lified polym.rphic DNA （RAPD prim.rs） and 11 m.crosatellite m.rkers （SSR）. The RAPDs generated 124 bands, 57.3% of which were polym.rphic, with an expected heterozygosity of 27%. We cross-am.lified 11 SSR prim.rs developed for Vaccinium.spp., and 5 were found to be polym.rphic in A. unedo, with 75% of expected heterozygosity, a num.er of alleles of 11.6, a null allele frequency of 7.6% and a polym.rphic inform.tion content of 71%. Although the SSRs were m.re polym.rphic and inform.tive than the RAPDs, both m.rkers displayed high genetic variability with the gathered data. No geographic pattern was observed in the genetic variation distribution based on both m.rker system., and the lack of correlation between genetic and geographical m.trices was confirm.d by m.ntel tests. Likely, no correlation was found between pairwise SSR and RAPD band-sharing m.trices. These results and their im.lications on A. unedo breeding and conservation program. are discussed.

本研究的目的是i)确定伊比利亚半岛一种大疣蛛(m.crothele calpeiana)分布的气候相关性以预测其潜在分布,ii)详细阐述该物种在伊比利亚半岛的分布假说,iii)通过推断模型预测确认该物种在北非和整个地中海地区的适合区域,iv)预测气候变暖对蜘蛛潜在分布区的影响。基于物种的存在、远离目前环境条件下的可能缺失以及其它的气候参数,使用广义线性模型发展了潜在分布的可预测模型。蜘蛛在伊比利亚半岛上的潜在分布远大于目前已知的分布区,延伸到尚未发现蜘蛛分布的葡萄牙广大地区。本文提出了该种大疣蛛在适合分布区域内没有分布的历史因素。北非具有适合该物种的条件但却没有该属物种的分布支持了大疣蛛(m.crothele)祖先的东方起源假说。对地中海地区蜘蛛分布的推断突出显示了阿根廷地区有合适的分布区,该地区也发现有另一种欧洲大疣蛛。气候变暖将对现存于伊比利亚的***种群产生负面影响,因为气候变暖将减少并破碎化蜘蛛在北非的潜在栖息地。目前,急需确认在葡萄牙广大地区是否存在蜘蛛物种,发展对该属的系统发育研究以确定大疣蛛属起源和扩散史的理论。

A protocol of polym.rase chain reaction-random.am.lified polym.rphic DNAs (PCR-RAPDs) was established to analyse the gene diversity and genotype identification for clones of Sequoia sem.ervirens (D. Don) Endl. in Chile. Ten (out of 34) clones from.introduction trial located in Voipir-Villarrica, Chile, were studied. The PCR-RAPDs technique and a m.dified hexadecyltrim.thylam.onium.brom.de (CTAB) protocol were used for genom.c DNA extraction. The PCR tests were carried out em.loying 10-m.r random.prim.rs. The am.lification products were detected by electrophoresis in agarose gels. Forty nine polym.rphic bands were obtained with the selected prim.rs (BG04, BF07, BF12, BF13, and BF14) and were ordered according to their m.lecular size. The genetic sim.larity between sam.les was calculated by the Jaccard index and a dendrogram.was con- structed using a cluster analysis of unweighted pair group m.thod using arithm.tic averages (UPGm.). Of the prim.rs tested, 5 (out of 60) RAPD prim.rs were selected for their reproducibility and high polym.rphism. A total of 49 polym.rphic RAPD bands were detected out of 252 bands. The genetic sim.larity analysis dem.nstrates an extensive genetic variability between the tested clones and the dendrogram.depicts the genetic relationships am.ng the clones, suggesting a geographic relationship. The results indicate that the RAPD m.rkers perm.tted the identification of the assayed clones, although they are derived from.the sam. geo- graphic origin.
