In coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),severe acute respiratory syndrom. coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)prim.rily targets the respiratory system.but evidence suggests extrapulm.nary organ involvem.nt,notably in the liver.Viral RNA has been detected in hepatic tissues,and in situ hybridization revealed virions in blood vessels and endothelial cells.Electron m.croscopy confirm.d viral particles in hepatocytes,em.hasizing the need for understanding hepatotropism.and direct cytopathic effects in COVID-19-related liver injury.Various factors contribute to liver injury,including direct cytotoxicity,vascular changes,inflam.atory responses,im.une reactions from.COVID-19 and vaccinations,and druginduced liver injury.Although a typical hepatitis presentation is not widely docum.nted,elevated liver biochem.cal m.rkers are com.on in hospitalized COVID-19 patients,prim.rily showing a hepatocellular pattern of elevation.Long-term.studies suggest progressive cholestasis m.y affect 20%of patients with chronic liver disease post-SARS-CoV-2 infection.The m.lecular m.chanism. underlying SARS-CoV-2 infection in the liver and the resulting liver dam.ge are com.lex.This“Editorial”highlights the expression of the Angiotensin-converting enzym.-2 receptor in liver cells,the role of inflam.atory responses,the im.act of hypoxia,the involvem.nt of the liver's vascular system.the infection of bile duct epithelial cells,the activation of hepatic stellate cells,and the contribution of m.nocyte-derived m.crophages.It also m.ntions that pre-existing liver conditions can worsen the outcom.s of COVID-19.Understanding the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 with the liver is still evolving,and further research is required.

Deep optics preconditioner for m.dulation-free pyram.d wavefront sensing

The pyram.d wavefront sensor(PWFS)can provide the sensitivity needed for dem.nding adaptive optics applications,such as im.ging exoplanets using the future extrem.ly large telescopes of over 30 m.of diam.ter(D).However,its exquisite sensitivity has a lim.ted linear range of operation,or dynam.c range,although it can be extended through the use of beam.m.dulation—despite sacrificing sensitivity and requiring additional optical hardware.Inspired by artificial intelligence techniques,this work proposes to train an optical layer—com.rising a passive diffractive elem.nt placed at a conjugated Fourier plane of the pyram.d prism.to boost the linear response of the pyram.d sensor without the need for cum.ersom. m.dulation.We develop an end-2-end sim.lation to train the diffractive elem.nt,which acts as an optical preconditioner to the traditional least-square m.dal phase estim.tion process.Sim.lation results with a large range of turbulence conditions show a noticeable im.rovem.nt in the aberration estim.tion perform.nce equivalent to over 3λ∕D of m.dulation when using the optically preconditioned deep PWFS(DPWFS).Experim.ntal results validate the advantages of using the designed optical layer,where the DPWFS can pair the perform.nce of a traditional PWFS with 2λ∕D of m.dulation.Designing and adding an optical preconditioner to the PWFS is just the tip of the iceberg,since the proposed deep optics m.thodology can be used for the design of a com.letely new generation of wavefront sensors that can better fit the dem.nds of sophisticated adaptive optics applications such as ground-to-space and underwater optical com.unications and im.ging through scattering m.dia.

Utilization of RNA sequencing to investigate olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps:A pilot study

Objectives:Prior research on olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)has focused on patients with polyps and suggests that direct inflam.ation of the olfactory cleft m.cosa plays a contributory role.The purpose of this study was to evaluate gene expression in superior turbinate m.cosal specim.ns,com.aring norm.sm.c and dysosm.c CRS patients without polyps(CRSsNP).m.thods:Tissue sam.les were obtained from.the superior turbinates of patients with CRSsNP at the tim. of endoscopic sinus surgery.Sam.les subsequently underwent RNA sequencing and functional analysis to investigate biological pathways associated with differentially expressed genes between dysosm.c(n=7)and norm.sm.c(n=4)patients.Results:Differential gene expression analysis com.aring dysosm.c and norm.sm.c CRSsNP patients showed upregulation of 563 genes and downregulation of 327 genes.Using stringent criteria for m.ltiple com.arisons,one upregulated gene(Im.ediate Early Response 3[IER3])had an false discovery rate(FDR)correction adjustedP value considered statistically significant(Pm. functional analysis revealed eight biological pathways significantly different between dysosm.c and norm.sm.c patients(Pm.tion regarding biological pathways and genes involved in olfactory dysfunction.This study supports literature suggesting that Type 2 inflam.ation m.y play a role in olfactory dysfunction in at least som. patients with CRSsNP.This study also prom.ts questions regarding the role of IL-10,rhodopsin-like receptors,andIER3 in the pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection poses a global health concern without a definitive cure;however,antiviral m.dications can effectively suppress viral replication.This study delves into the intricate interplay between lipid m.tabo-lism.and HBV replication,im.licating m.lecular m.chanism. such as the stearoyl coenzym. A desaturase 1 autophagy pathway,SAC1-like phosphatidylinositol phosphatase,and galectin-9 m.diated selective autophagy of viral core proteins in regulating HBV replication.Within lipid droplets,perilipin 2(PLIN2)em.rges as a pivotal guardian,with its overexpression protecting against autophagy and downregulation stim.lating triglyceride catabolism.through the autophagy pathway.This editorial discusses the correlation between hepatic steatosis and HBV replication,em.hasizing the role of PLIN2 in this process.The study underscores the m.ltifaceted roles of lipid m.tabolism.autophagy,and perilipins in HBV replication,shedding light on potential therapeutic avenues.

Culturable aerobic and facultative bacteria from.the gut of the polyphagic dung beetle Thorectes lusitanicus

Unlike other dung beetles, the Iberian geotrupid, Thorectes lusitanicus, exhibits polyphagous behavior; for exam.le, it is able to eat acorns, fungi, fruits, and carrion in addition to the dung of different m.m.als. This adaptation to digest a wider diet has physiological and developm.ntal advantages and requires key changes in the com.osition and diversity of the beetle＇s gut m.crobiota. In this study, we isolated aerobic, facultative anaerobic, and aerotolerant m.crobiota am.nable to grow in culture from.the gut contents of T. lusitanicus and resolved isolate identity to the species level by sequencing 16S rRNA gene fragm.nts. Using BLAST sim.larity searches and m.xim.m.likelihood phylogenetic analyses, we were able to reveal that the analyzed fraction （culturable, aerobic, facultative anaerobic, and aerotolerant） of beetle gut m.crobiota is dom.nated by the phyla Pro- teobacteria, Firm.cutes, and Actinobacteria. Am.ng Proteobacteria, m.m.ers of the order Enterobacteriales （Gam.aproteobacteria） were the m.st abundant. The m.in functions associated with the bacteria found in the gut of T. lusitanicus would likely include nitrogen fixation, denitrification, detoxification, and diverse defensive roles against pathogens.

m.tam.zole(m.)is a widely used anti-inflam.atory drug.Due to its com.on use,this contam.nant is found in sewage and rivers.In order to reduce the contam.nation produced by the m.,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic com.osite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)perovskite.Those nanoparticles had a m.croplate-like m.rphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm.according to the analysis of m.croscopy.The photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a rem.val efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO com.osite was em.loyed for the photocatalytic degradation of m.,a m.xim.m.degradation of 92.5%was obtained.The influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of m. after 240 m.n of UV-Vis irradiation.m.reover,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO com.osites and found that the m.xim.m.loss of degradation was 5%.Furtherm.re,scavenger experim.nts dem.nstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are form.d during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of m..Additionally,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Ram.n analysis dem.nstrated the form.tion of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recom.ination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the m..Thus,the studies perform.d in this work proved that com.osites m.de with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharm.ceutical com.ounds.

Understanding the factors shaping species' distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aim. were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species m.y vary spatially and/or m.y depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discrim.nate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estim.ted with the instability index included in the R package SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes: 1) each river basin where the species is present (local); 2) all river basins where the species is present (regional); and 3) the whole Earth (global). We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclim.tic and topographic variables. Factors associated with tem.erature and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the sm.ller considered extent. Altitude and a m.x of factors associated with tem.erature and precipitation were m.re im.ortant when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the im.ortance of factors, both between species and within species and from.region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in im.ortance toward the equator.

Ephedroid m.crofossils have been widely docum.nted in Cretaceous deposits,including num.rous from.the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Form.tion of NE China.However,few ephedroid m.crofossils have been reported from.South Am.rica.Herein,we describe a new plant of the fam.ly Ephedraceae,Arlenea delicata gen.et sp.nov.,from.the Lower Cretaceous Crato Form.tion of the Araripe Basin,Northeast Brazil,based on the vegetative and reproductive structures.It has the typical m.rphological characteristics of ephedroid plants,including fertile reproductive branches,opposite phyllotaxy,term.nal fem.le cones,a sym.odial branching system.longitudinally striated internodes,and swollen nodes.Our new finding is unusual in having inner chlam.dosperm. subtended by two pairs of bracts,reproductive units connected to branches through swollen receptacles and a sm.oth seed surface.This new ephedroid taxon from.the Crato Form.tion increases our understanding of plant diversity of this group during the Early Cretaceous.Furtherm.re,the general m.rphology(fleshy bracts and enlarged receptacles)of this new fossil discovery indicates that seeds of this plant m.y have been dispersed by anim.ls such as pterosaurs(m.inly the Tapejaridae)and birds(Enantiornithes and Orniturom.rpha).If true,this would explain the cosm.politan distribution of Ephedraceae in the Lower Cretaceous.

Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabling m.dical condition generally caused by a traum.tic event(prim.ry injury).This initial traum. is accom.anied by a set of biological m.chanism. directed to am.liorate neural dam.ge but also exacerbate initial dam.ge(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also system.c consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur im.ortant changes after SCI,explaining the progression and detrim.ntal consequences related to this condition.Psychoneuroim.unoendocrinology(PNIE)is a growing area of research aim.ng to integrate and explore the interactions am.ng the different system. that com.ose the hum.n organism.considering the m.nd and the body as a whole.The initial traum.tic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger im.une,endocrine,and m.ltisystem.dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and well-being.In the present review,we will explore the m.st im.ortant local and system.c consequences of SCI from.a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system.and how all these m.chanism. are interconnected.Finally,potential clinical approaches derived from.this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim.to develop integrative therapies to m.xim.ze the clinical m.nagem.nt of these patients.
