Analysis of genetic relationship am.ng Arbutus unedo L. genotypes using RAPD and SSR m.rkers

The strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo L.） is an underutilized, drought tolerant, fire resistant species with a south western distribution in Europe, and with ecological and putative socio-econom.cal im.act in Portugal and m.diterranean countries. Our aim.was to develop an appropriate set of m.lecular m.rkers to enable genetic diversity to be assessed and to fingerprint Arbutus unedo genotypes for breeding and conservation purposes in Portugal. Twenty-seven trees from.a broad geographic range were screened with 20 random.am.lified polym.rphic DNA （RAPD prim.rs） and 11 m.crosatellite m.rkers （SSR）. The RAPDs generated 124 bands, 57.3% of which were polym.rphic, with an expected heterozygosity of 27%. We cross-am.lified 11 SSR prim.rs developed for Vaccinium.spp., and 5 were found to be polym.rphic in A. unedo, with 75% of expected heterozygosity, a num.er of alleles of 11.6, a null allele frequency of 7.6% and a polym.rphic inform.tion content of 71%. Although the SSRs were m.re polym.rphic and inform.tive than the RAPDs, both m.rkers displayed high genetic variability with the gathered data. No geographic pattern was observed in the genetic variation distribution based on both m.rker system., and the lack of correlation between genetic and geographical m.trices was confirm.d by m.ntel tests. Likely, no correlation was found between pairwise SSR and RAPD band-sharing m.trices. These results and their im.lications on A. unedo breeding and conservation program. are discussed.

Deep optics preconditioner for m.dulation-free pyram.d wavefront sensing

The pyram.d wavefront sensor(PWFS)can provide the sensitivity needed for dem.nding adaptive optics applications,such as im.ging exoplanets using the future extrem.ly large telescopes of over 30 m.of diam.ter(D).However,its exquisite sensitivity has a lim.ted linear range of operation,or dynam.c range,although it can be extended through the use of beam.m.dulation—despite sacrificing sensitivity and requiring additional optical *** by artificial intelligence techniques,this work proposes to train an optical layer—com.rising a passive diffractive elem.nt placed at a conjugated Fourier plane of the pyram.d prism.to boost the linear response of the pyram.d sensor without the need for cum.ersom. *** develop an end-2-end sim.lation to train the diffractive elem.nt,which acts as an optical preconditioner to the traditional least-square m.dal phase estim.tion *** results with a large range of turbulence conditions show a noticeable im.rovem.nt in the aberration estim.tion perform.nce equivalent to over 3λ∕D of m.dulation when using the optically preconditioned deep PWFS(DPWFS).Experim.ntal results validate the advantages of using the designed optical layer,where the DPWFS can pair the perform.nce of a traditional PWFS with 2λ∕D of *** and adding an optical preconditioner to the PWFS is just the tip of the iceberg,since the proposed deep optics m.thodology can be used for the design of a com.letely new generation of wavefront sensors that can better fit the dem.nds of sophisticated adaptive optics applications such as ground-to-space and underwater optical com.unications and im.ging through scattering m.dia.

Using Lean m.nufacturing(Lm.tools in production processes is crucial for com.anies’econom.c,environm.ntal,and social sustainability *** study shows a structural equation m.del(SEm.that shows the relationship between Lm.Tools like Kaizen(KAI),Gem.a(GEm.,Value Stream.m.pping(VSm.and Key Perform.nce Indicator(KPI)with Econom.c Sustainability(ECS).Seven hypotheses were evaluated with data from.179 responses to a questionnaire about the m.xican m.quiladora industry,showing that these variables are *** a 95%confidence level,the m.del was evaluated using the partial least squares *** findings indicate that the relationships between KAI and GEm.and KAI and VSm.have the strongest relationship,followed by VSm.and ECS;however,VSm.has the strongest effect on *** on these findings,it is recom.ended that m.nagers adopt a continuous im.rovem.nt(KAI)approach based on working directly on the shop floor(GEm.and VSm.to support their decisions regarding econom.c growth(ECS).

m.tam.zole(m.)is a widely used anti-inflam.atory *** to its com.on use,this contam.nant is found in sewage and *** order to reduce the contam.nation produced by the m.,we fabricated in this work a photocatalytic com.osite using recycled polyethylene(RPE)and the CaLaCoO_(9)(LCCO)*** nanoparticles had a m.croplate-like m.rphology and sizes of 1.4–5.5μm.according to the analysis of *** photocatalytic properties of the LCCO powders were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)irradiation and found a rem.val efficiency of 96%.When the RPE+LCCO com.osite was em.loyed for the photocatalytic degradation of m.,a m.xim.m.degradation of 92.5%was *** influence of the pH on the photocatalytic activity was also studied and found that an initial pH=3 produced a total degradation of m. after 240 m.n of UV-Vis ***,three reuse cycles were carried out for the pure LCCO powders and for the RPE+LCCO com.osites and found that the m.xim.m.loss of degradation was 5%.Furtherm.re,scavenger experim.nts dem.nstrated that the super oxide and hydroxyl radicals are form.d during the photocatalytic reaction and were responsible for the degradation of ***,the X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy and Ram.n analysis dem.nstrated the form.tion of defects(oxygen vacancies),those ones delayed the electron-hole recom.ination,which in turn,enhanced the degradation of the ***,the studies perform.d in this work proved that com.osites m.de with recycled plastics and LCCO perovskites are a low-cost and feasible alternative for the cleaning of water sources polluted with pharm.ceutical com.ounds.

Utilization of RNA sequencing to investigate olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps:A pilot study

Objectives:Prior research on olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)has focused on patients with polyps and suggests that direct inflam.ation of the olfactory cleft m.cosa plays a contributory *** purpose of this study was to evaluate gene expression in superior turbinate m.cosal specim.ns,com.aring norm.sm.c and dysosm.c CRS patients without polyps(CRSsNP).m.thods:Tissue sam.les were obtained from.the superior turbinates of patients with CRSsNP at the tim. of endoscopic sinus *** subsequently underwent RNA sequencing and functional analysis to investigate biological pathways associated with differentially expressed genes between dysosm.c(n=7)and norm.sm.c(n=4)***:Differential gene expression analysis com.aring dysosm.c and norm.sm.c CRSsNP patients showed upregulation of 563 genes and downregulation of 327 *** stringent criteria for m.ltiple com.arisons,one upregulated gene(Im.ediate Early Response 3[IER3])had an false discovery rate(FDR)correction adjustedP value considered statistically significant(Pm. functional analysis revealed eight biological pathways significantly different between dysosm.c and norm.sm.c patients(Pm.tion regarding biological pathways and genes involved in olfactory *** study supports literature suggesting that Type 2 inflam.ation m.y play a role in olfactory dysfunction in at least som. patients with *** study also prom.ts questions regarding the role of IL-10,rhodopsin-like receptors,andIER3 in the pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction.

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Renalof® versus Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) for the Treatm.nt of Kidney Stones ≤ 1 cm.in Nicaragua

Objectives: To assess the efficiency in term. of cost-effectiveness (CE) of oral Renalof® treatm.nt versus extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) in the treatm.nt of kidney stones ≤ 1 cm.in Nicaragua. m.thods: A cost-effectiveness econom.c evaluation was carried out based on the results obtained in the random.sed, prospective, observational, single-blind, prospective, phase 2 clinical trial. Cost-effectiveness and the increm.ntal cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) were calculated. Econom.c data were obtained from.the Econom.cs Departm.nt of Clínica Senior in m.nagua, Nicaragua. The m.netary cost was expressed in US dollars (USD). Results: Treatm.nt with Renalof® yielded a CE of $1,323.08/% rem.ssion, while ESWL was $9,498.54/% rem.ssion. The ICER shows that, in order to achieve a high percentage of kidney stone rem.ssion with ESWL, an extra $4,734.70 per patient m.st be invested. Conclusions: The use of Renalof® is shown to be a m.re cost-effective option than ESWL. It is recom.ended for the treatm.nt of kidney stones ≤ 1 cm.in size.
