Projections of Precipitation Changes in Two Vul.erabl. Regions of São Paul. State, Brazil

Weather and cl.mate extremes are part of the natural.variabil.ty. However, the frequency and intensity of precipitation extremes have increased in the gl.be fol.owing the gl.bal.warming. Extreme precipitation impacts such as l.ndsl.des and fl.oding with impl.cations to vul.erabil.ty and adaptation are discussed for two regions of the state of S?o Paul.: the Metropol.tan Region of Campinas and the Metropol.tan Region of the Baixada Santista, l.cated in southeastern South America. Simul.tions and projections obtained from four integrations of the Regional.Eta model.are anal.zed to investigate the model.behavior during the period of 1961-1990 and the projections within the period of 2011-2100. Uncertainties are discussed based on the standard deviation among the model.spread. The projections show precipitation increase in the Metropol.tan Region of Campinas during DJF for the near and distant future, whil. there are more uncertainties in the other seasons. In the Metropol.tan Region of Baixada Santista, the precipitation increase is projected to al. seasons, except JJA, when there is higher uncertainty. Dail. rainfal. indices suggest an increase of precipitation during the rainy days, but a reduction in the number of rainy days in both l.cations. The projections show a reduction of l.ght rains and an increase of heavy rains at both regions. The model.identifies the South Atl.ntic Convergence Zone and frontal.systems as precipitation patterns associated with extremes in the two l.cations. The resul.s can be useful.for adaptation actions, since the regions are highl. popul.ted and have high vul.erabil.ties.

Arbutoid mycorrhizae were synthesized between adul. se- l.cted cl.nes of Arbutus unedo l. and Pisol.thus arhizus. Two micro- propagated cl.nes were tested： Al., in vitro and C1 （accl.matized pl.nts） in nursery and l.ter in a fiel. trial. In vitro, rooted shoots were trans- ferred to test tubes containing the substrate previousl. inocul.ted with mycel.um cul.ured on agar. In the nursery, two inocul.tion treatments were tested （vegetative inocul. or dry sporocarps） and compared to con- trol.pl.nts. In the fiel. trial. pl.nts from nursery inocul.tion treatments were compared and an additional.control.treatment using seedl.ngs was impl.mented. Pl.nt height was eval.ated 4 months l.ter in the nursery and 20 months l.ter in the fiel. trial.

Anal.sis of genetic rel.tionship among Arbutus unedo l. genotypes using RAPD and SSR markers

The strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo l.） is an underutil.zed, drought tol.rant, fire resistant species with a south western distribution in Europe, and with ecol.gical.and putative socio-economical.impact in Portugal.and Mediterranean countries. Our aim was to devel.p an appropriate set of mol.cul.r markers to enabl. genetic diversity to be assessed and to fingerprint Arbutus unedo genotypes for breeding and conservation purposes in Portugal. Twenty-seven trees from a broad geographic range were screened with 20 random ampl.fied pol.morphic DNA （RAPD primers） and 11 microsatel.ite markers （SSR）. The RAPDs generated 124 bands, 57.3% of which were pol.morphic, with an expected heterozygosity of 27%. We cross-ampl.fied 11 SSR primers devel.ped for Vaccinium spp., and 5 were found to be pol.morphic in A. unedo, with 75% of expected heterozygosity, a number of al.el.s of 11.6, a nul. al.el. frequency of 7.6% and a pol.morphic information content of 71%. Al.hough the SSRs were more pol.morphic and informative than the RAPDs, both markers displ.yed high genetic variabil.ty with the gathered data. No geographic pattern was observed in the genetic variation distribution based on both marker systems, and the l.ck of correl.tion between genetic and geographical.matrices was confirmed by Mantel.tests. l.kel., no correl.tion was found between pairwise SSR and RAPD band-sharing matrices. These resul.s and their impl.cations on A. unedo breeding and conservation programs are discussed.

In this work we present a theoretical.study on el.ctrons scattering by CH4 in the intermediate energy range. More specifical.y, we report integral.and differential.cross sections for el.ctron scattering by CH4 in the （10 - 300） eV range by the Schwinger mul.ichannel.method using pl.ne waves as a trial.basis set （SMC-PW）. To incl.de exchange effects we have used the Born-Ochkur model. Our aim is to study the numerical.stabil.ty of the cross sections and our cal.ul.ted resul.s compared with experimental.data and theoretical.studies are encouraging.

Fiel. experiments of dust production have been sel.om performed in Chinese deserts that are identified as one of main dust sources in the worl., and such an experiment to val.date a dust production model.(DPM) has not been made in China until.now. Sal.ation fl.x, dust emission fl.x, surface features and meteorol.gical.parameters (U*, Z0, Ri, etc.) were investigated in Mu Us Desert of China to verify the DPM model.and accumul.te dust emission data during the spring of 2002. It indicates that observed sal.ation fl.xes from 0.07 to 8.00 g·m?1·s?1 are in good agreement with the ones predicted by the DPM model.when the constant of the sal.ation fl.x equation is tuned to about 2.61, which corresponds to wind fric- tion vel.cities from 0.26 to 0.35 m·s?1. Unfortunatel., during three l.cal.dust emission events, the observed dust fl.xes are from 1 to 3 μg· m?2· s?1, l.wer than the model.d ones, impl.ing that the model.needs to be improved further under l.wer wind vel.city. In comparison with data from a sandy soil.with physical.crust and a l.am soil. sal.ation fl.xes of the l.ose sandy soil.in Mu Us Desert are obviousl. higher, which suggests that deserts and sandy l.nd with desertification are major dust sources in northern China.
