Ectophylla alba is a tent-making bat that roosts in mixed-sex clusters comprising adults and *** goal was to determine the genetic identity of individuals belonging to different roosting *** tested the hypothesis of kin selection as a major force structuring group *** used 9 microsatellites designed for *** to determine the genetic identity and probability of parentage of *** analyzed parentage and kinship using the software ML-Relate,GenAIEx,and *** obtained relationship probabilities(0.5)revealed a clear maternal relationship between female adults and offspring with allele compatibility,and at least 5 relationships between male adults and *** found a low degree of relatedness within roosting *** roosting groups at different sites,the mean probability of a half-sibling relationship ranged from 0.214 to 0.244 and,for full-sibling relationship,from 0.383 to ***,adult individuals were poorly related within clusters,and kinship as an evolutionary force could not explain group membership.

In nutrition for productive species, additives play an important role in boosting physiological processes. Only in recent years studies include models of the effects on fish cells of these additives. We observed effects of silymarin, a compound highly utilized in aquaculture. The cell line SHK-1 was used derived from the upper liver of the Atlantic salmon as a biological model. Samples were exposed to silymarin in incrementing time and concentrations, to evaluate by MTT and number of cells, the effects on cell viability. Also, oxidative stress models were used to find the protector effects of silymarin against these agents. Our data indicate that a dose of 100 ppm of silymarin is sufficient to stimulate cellular proliferation. Cultures were exposed to high glucose (15 mM) or H2O2 (0.1 mM) in presence of or absence of silymarin at 100 ppm. We observed that the toxic effects of both compounds were blocked by the presence of silymarin. Our results indicate that it is important to evaluate additive effects at a cellular level. Also, silymarin does have proliferative effects, and protect against cellular injury in our models. Our study helps to generate more rational applications of additives in the industry and presents new challenges in order to better manipulate the model in the laboratory, allowing us to obtain new evidence regarding the microalgae’s biology through in vitro studies.

Role of Chemotherapy in Advanced Gastric Cancer: Review from a Latin American Perspective

Gastric cancer (GC) is the fourth most common neoplasm and the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. In Latin America (LA), the burden of this disease is higher and is the leading cause of cancer death in some countries. Chemotherapy is the standard treatment for advanced-stage GC. However, the best regimen for specific populations, such as LA, is as yet unknown. Cisplatin and fluoropyrimidine continue to be the standard of care in light of the findings of phase III studies, while docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are alternatives for patients with suitable overall health. Oxaliplatin or irinotecan with fluoropyrimidine can also be used in elderly patients who are not candidates for cisplatin, or have a limited performance status. This review examines studies conducted in LA. Patients from LA are under-represented in multicenter trials of chemotherapy and targeted therapies. The major challenges currently lie in implementing strategies in which patients are selected on the basis of regional, racial or molecular characteristics, to consider the molecular subtype of GC for enrolment, and in selecting patients according to prognostic factors to optimize the benefits of chemotherapy.

Linking Local Appreciation with Conservation of an Edible Fruit Species: The Case Study of Ilama (<i>Annona diversifolia</i>Saff.) in Tierra Caliente, Mexico

The ilama tree (Annona diversifolia Saff.) is an underutilized fruit species from Mesoamerica with a noteworthy variability in southern Mexico. The present study describes differences in knowledge and appreciation of the fruit among inhabitants from different communities in Southern Mexico, as well as differences among their ilama trees. The study took place in Tierra Caliente, a region located in the states of Guerrero and the State of Mexico. Interviews were administered in three different communities as an attempt to associate the natural morphologic variation of plants and locals’ knowledge and use of the tree in order to identify their implications for conservation. Data were analyzed by multivariate analysis, and the results suggest that the morphological variation of the plants and the commercial importance of ilama are well known by locals. Indigenous community inhabitants prefer and select only white pulp trees, whereas mestizo communities promote and conserve plants with white, red, purple, and blue pulp. Germplasm flow is dynamic in the region, and ilama fruit represents a different economic value for each community. Selling the fruit is the primary goal, but not specifically its conservation and promotion. Implications for in situ conservation of ilama in Mexico are discussed.

The wing tip vortex has a great similarity with the swirling *** these are generated of a simpler and more economic form in a laboratory,it is relevant to determine which the best method is for the generation of the swirling *** this paper,the velocity distribution obtained experimentally with the method of generation here proposed,which consists of the employment of an axial fan without stators,is compared with the velocity distribution of swirling jets generated with three different *** is observed that the velocity distribution obtained with the proposed method is similar with one of the methods found in the references,which uses fixed blades guides at the entry of the *** proposed method is suitable for the generation of the swirling jet and it is considered that it is simpler and more economic to use blades fixed guides.

Background: Cystinosis is a multisystemic autosomal recessive deficiency of the lysosomal membrane transporter protein (cystinosin) caused by mutations in CTNS gene. Objective: This study summarizes the Portuguese experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with this rare disease over the past few years and reports recurrent mutations in the CTNS gene. Methods: Unrelated patients from different pediatric and adult hospitals all over Portugal with non-nephrotic proteinuria, hypercalciuria, hypokalemia impaired proximal reabsorption of amino acids, glycosuria and hypophosphatemia, suggestive of a Fanconi syndrome and ocular problems, were studied. Intra-leukocyte cystine levels were determined and molecular analysis was performed, to determine the presence or absence of the 57-kb deletion in CTNS, followed by direct sequencing of the coding exons of CTNS. Results: From 1998 to 2017, twenty-one cystinotic patients were biochemically diagnosed. From the remaining seventeen (four deceased), eleven were studied for CTNS gene. Five out of eleven patients were homozygous for the 57-kb deletion (10/22;45.5%), and other five were compound heterozygous for this variant (15/22;68.2%). The other mutations found were p.Q128X (c.721 C>T;2/22), p.S139F (c.755 C>T;4/22) and c.18-21delGACT (p.T7FfsX7;1/22). All of these seventeen cystinotic patients are in treatment. Approximately 84% are adults, 16% are young children, and 54.5% are kidney transplant recipient. Conclusions: The authors would like to emphasize the importance of first screening for the 57-kb deletion since it is very common in our population. This genetic study is the first in our country and it could be the basis for future genetic counseling in Portuguese population.
