Evaluation of redox-sensitive metals in marine surface sediments influenced by the oxygen minimum zone of the Humboldt Current System, Northern Chile

Upwelling coastal systems can be used to understand how dissolved oxygen and biological productivity control the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in marine *** aluminium(Al),cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),nickel(Ni),molybdenum(Mo),vanadium(V),total organic carbon(TOC),total nitrogen(TN)and total sulfur(TS)contents in surficial sediment collected from different water depths(30,70,and 120 m)in three northern Chilean bays influenced by coastal upwelling and oxygen minimum zones(OMZs)were *** component analysis(PCA),cluster analysis,and Spearman’s rank correlation were used to identify the mechanisms responsible for the redox-sensitive metal *** content of redox-sensitive metals and organic components in sediment increased with increasing water column depth,whereas lithogenic metals *** the Mejillones del Sur and Caldera bays,the enrichment factors of the redox-sensitive metals showed enrichment for all metals with *** Cd and V enrichments are mainly the product of biogenic flow to the seabed,and the Mo and Ni enrichments are due to preservation under low subsurface oxygen *** reduction is not an important mechanism in the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in the sediment of the three *** PCA showed that the behaviors of the redox-sensitive metals and organic components reflect differences in the effects of the OMZ in sediment along the coast of northern Chile,with a more intense OMZ in Mejillones del Sur bay and weaker OMZs in Caldera and Inglesa ***,the high degree of enrichment in redox-sensitive metals in Caldera Bay can be attributed to the intense activity of the mining industry near the bay,a situation that produces geochemical behavior similar to that observed in Mejillones del Sur Bay.

Presbyopia still remains the last frontier of refractive *** surgical management is under constant evolution due to the limitations that exist today with respect to its management,which is probably in relation with the multifactorial basis in which presbyopia is clinically developed in the *** currently,virtually all surgical techniques that have been proposed for its correction are based on the induction of pseudoaccommodation in the presbyopic eye,including ***,the real restoration of accommodation is more complex,and it has been tried by the use of different,so called,“accommodative”pseudophakic intraocular lenses(AIOL).Overall,the reported results with these lenses by independent authors have been modest in relation with the restoration of the accommodative power of the eye and these modest benefits are usually lost with time due to the long term changes in the capsular *** fact made these lenses to be almost abandoned in the last few years,but there are currently other AIOL models being used with innovative mechanisms of action and different anatomical support outside the capsular bag that offer encouraging preliminary results that could bring a new potential of application to these types of *** this article,we will update the modern refractive surgeon about the fundamentals and provide updated information about the outcomes of AIOLs by reviewing the concept of accommodation,the different attempts that have been accomplished in the past,their demonstrated published results in human clinical trials,and the future alternatives that may arrive in the near future.

Objective:To investigate the vasorelaxant effect of organic extracts from Apium graveolens(***)which is a part of a group of plants subjected to pharmacological and phytochemical study with the purpose of offering it as an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive ***:An ex vivo method was employed to assess the vasorelaxant *** consisted of using rat aortic rings with and without endothelium precontracted with ***:All extracts caused concentration-dependent relaxation in precontracted aortic rings with and without endothelium;the most active extracts were dichloromethane and Ethyl Acetate extracts from *** results suggested that secondary metabolites responsible for the vasorelaxant activity belong to a group of compounds of medium ***,our evidence showed that effect induced by dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from *** is mediated probably by calcium ***:*** represents an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive effects.

Background Pulmonary insufficiency is usually well tolerated after repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) . Many accepted surgical options for repair of TOF will result in some degree of pulmonary insufficiency. This may result in late, progressive right ventricular dilation and dysfunction, with increasing fatigue, lower limb edema, arrhythmias, and sudden *** Our objective was to review our experience with late pulmonary valve implantation (PVI) after repair of TOF and to evaluate the relative benefits and risks of operation. Methods. Patients who underwent late PVI after TOF repair from June, 2002 to April 30, 2004 were reviewed. Sources included patients’ hospital charts and echocardiograms. Follow - up was performed by the primary cardiologist. Results Ten patients had elective, late PVI. Average time after initial repair was 20.0 years (range 1,5 - 43 years, median 19 years) . There was no hospital mortality and all patients demonstrated significant symptomatic improvement. Pre - operatively, 9 of 10 patients were in New York Heart Association class Ⅲ - IV. After PVI, all patients were in class Ⅰ - Ⅱ (average class improvement of 1.7) . Left ventricular ejection fraction was significantly improved (EF from 62.1 ± 4.7 % to 70.2 ±4.9 ％, p =0.0001), as was fractional shortening (34.0±5.0 ％ to 40.0 ±4.2 ％, p = 0.01) . Right ventricular diameter also decreased significantly (from 32.3 ± 7.5 mm to 24.4 ±5.4 mm, p = 0.0005) . All PVI were performed with Carpentier - Edwards bovine pericardial prostheses, with sizes ranging from 19 mm to 27 mm. Average hospital stay was 5.4 days (range 4-7 days) . One patient had preoperative ventricular fibrillation, requiring resuscitation and an implantable cardiac defibrillater (ICd) before PVI, and another patient needed ICd at the time of PVI because of ventricular arrhythmias. The present work describes a numerical study of a confined two-phase flow under high-pressure conditions, typical of gas turbine combustors. An Eulerian frame was used for the gas phase together with a Lagrangian approach to describe the dispersed phase. The computational method was extended to high-pressure environments, which are more representative of the practical gas turbine operating conditions. The results are compared with experimental data, and revealed the ability of the model to increase the knowledge of the turbulent dispersion phenomena for this type of practical conditions (high pressure and confined flow).

diurnal dependence of Growth Responses to Shade in Arabidopsis： Role of Hormone, Clock, and Light Signaling

We investigated the diurnal dependence of the hypocotyl-growth responses to shade under sunlight-night cycles in Arabidopsis thaliana. Afternoon shade events promoted hypocotyl growth, while morning shade was ineffective. The Ihy-d, elf3, lux, pif4 pifS, tocl, and quadruple della mutants retained the response to afternoon shade and the lack of response to morning shade while the Ihyccal mutant responded to both morning and afternoon shade. ThephyB mutant, plants overexpressing the multidrug resistance-like membrane protein ABCB19, and the iaa17/axr3 loss-of-function mutant failed to respond to shade. Transient exposure of sunlight-grown seedlings to synthetic auxin in the afternoon caused a stronger promotion of hypocotyl growth than morning treatments. The promotion of hypocotyl growth by afternoon shade or afternoon auxin required light perceived by phytochrome A or cryptochromes during the previous hours of the photoperiod. Although the ELF4-ELF3-LUX complex, PIF4, PIF5, and dELLA are key players in the generation of diurnal hypocotyl-growth patterns, they exert a minor role in the control of the diurnal pattern of growth responses to shade. We conclude that the strong diurnal dependency of hypocotyl-growth responses to shade relates to the balance between the antagonistic actions of LHY-CCA1 and a light-derived signal.

Trace elements, isotopic modeling and U-Th-Pb SHRIMP zircon age constraints are used to reconstruct the eruption history and magmatic processes of the Piedra Parada Caldera. In the early Eocene, the crystal-poor Barda Colorada ignimbrite(BCI), having >>15% micro-porphyritic crystals with respect to magmatic components, erupted a volume estimated in more than 300 km^3. The Piedra Parada caldera is located in the Patagonian Andes foreland, at the southern end of the calderas field of the Pilcaniyeu Volcanic Belt(PVB). This belt is related to an extensional tectonic setting as a result of the collision of the Farallon-Aluk ridge with South America, which enabled the development of a transform ocean/continental plate margin followed by the detachment of the Aluk plate and the opening of a slab window. The BCI extra-caldera Plateau is a >100 m thick deposit, having a lower unit with high silica(Si O_2> 76 wt.%),potassium poor rhyolitic composition(trondhjemitic like magma), and an upper unit with normal to high potassium rhyolitic composition(granitic like magma). A trace elements modeling of the BCI units shows that the BCI lower and upper units did not evolve from fractionation or immiscibility in the shallow magma reservoir. The BCI also have a primitive isotopic signature(initial87 Sr/86 Sr =0.7031-0.7049 and ε_(Nd)= +3.4 to +3.65). Thus, tectonic, compositional and isotopic constraints suggest the fast ascent of high silica magmas to a shallow reservoir, and point to an upper mantle origin for these rhyolitic magmas in a transitional(Orogenic-Anorogenic) tectono-magmatic setting. U-Th-Pb SHRIMP zircon crystallization ages of the Syn-caldera stage BCI units(56 -51.5 Ma) show a protracted life of 5 Ma for this caldera reservoir. The age of 52.9 ± 0.3 Ma is considered the best fit for the possible maximum age for the caldera collapse. Corneal transplantation outcomes after the extrusion of an intrastromal keratoprosthesis:a pilot study

This short report includes 5 eyes of 5 patients(mean age 63.2±12 years)who underwent a tectonic keratoplasty[deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(dALK)or penetrating keratoplasty(PK)]in order to rehabilitate the eye after the extrusion of the non-perforating keratoprosthesis(Kpro)KeraKlear(KeraMed,USA).The non-perforating Kpro was extruded after a mean period of 21.4±21.8 months due to *** two cases,the keratoplasty was performed the same day of the non-perforating Kpro removal due to a severe melting,while in the other three cases it was performed one to 3 months *** eyes received a dALK,but in 3 eyes a macroscopic descemet membrane perforation forced the conversion into a *** mean follow-up period after the keratoplasty was 16.8±6.6 *** cases of rejection were *** the 5 eyes achieved“anatomical success”(transparent graft,with no signs of infection or inflammation).Two eyes showed limited“functional success”because the achievement of the best visual potential was prevented by the development of glaucomatous optic atrophy during the follow-up *** conclusion,this short report presents an unexpected success of a keratoplasty performed with a tectonic purpose after the extrusion of the non-perforating Kpro because the corneal graft remained transparent,without neovascularization or scarring during the follow-up *** initial evidence shows some encouraging results regarding graft survival rate and the achievement of a useful visual rehabilitation with keratoplasty after a nonperforating Kpro failure instead of repeating the Kpro implantation.
