The effects of soil physical properties on yield components, grape quality and grapevine yield cv. Cabernet Sauvignon in Ultic Palexeralf soils located in Central Southern Chile were assessed. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments of soil texture: clayey, sandy clay and clayey loam. The higher yield was obtained in the sandy clay and clayey loam soils. The increase of bulk density, penetration resistance and clay content decreased the number of clusters per vine, number of berries per cluster and grapevine yield. Soil texture had not effects on the yield of shoots, berry diameter and total acidity. However, soluble solids were higher in the clayey soil. Shoot orientation only had positive effects on the cluster weight, number of berries per cluster, and grapevine yield, being higher in the upward shoots. This research remarked the importance of soil physical properties on the selection of sites with viticultural aptitude.

In the genus Quercus, regeneration by seed is reduced or absent in many species. The naturally protected area of the Sierra Fria, in Aguascalientes, Mexico contains forests that are fragmented and have been degraded due to human activities. The oak populations in this region demonstrate a very restricted sexual regeneration, with five of the most abundant species of this genus: Quercuseduardii, Q. grisea, Q. potosina, Q. resinosa and Q. sideroxyla presenting low seedling recruitment. In this study we evaluated seed viability and the effect of seed size on the germination, growth and survival of the trees, with the aim of recommending restoration and conservation program management actions for these oak species. In 2005 and 2006, 5000 acorns of each species were collected and viability, germination and growth experiments were performed in the laboratory and greenhouse. This study examines the distribution, ecology and genetic diversity of Quercus sideroxyla Humb. Bonpl, with an emphasis on its conservation on the Natural Protected Area of Sierra Fría in North Central Mexico. Twenty-nine locations were selected, and in each location, one plot of 1500 m2 was established. At every location, we obtained an abundance of Q. sideroxyla and a basal area for each individual tree, including geographical and climatological data. We used the Outlying Mean Index (OMI) to examine whether environmental conditions had a distributional effect on Q. sideroxyla populations and to obtain the static size population structure of the species. For the genetic analysis, we collected 18 adult individuals from each population, four polymorphic loci were used to estimate genetic diversity. Q. sideroxyla abundance was associated with narrow environmental conditions, especially when considering the topographical and meteorological environmental variables. The allelic richness value was 84 alleles (21 privatealleles), and the expected mean heterozygosity was 0.855 ± 0.009. The high vulnerability of the species to changes in the land use at the local scale and to global climatic changes increases the species’ susceptibility to local disappearance.

Culture and Molecular Identification of <i>Helicobacter pylori</i>in Drinking Water from Areas of High and Low Incidence of Gastric Cancer in Costa Rica

Background: Most patients infected with Helicobacter pylori show no clinical symptoms. Nonetheless, approximately 10% to 20% of these patients will develop peptic ulcers and 1% will develop gastric cancer. The International Agency for Cancer Research has classified Helicobacter pylori as a Group 1 carcinogen. Materials and Methods: Drinking water samples from 20 cantons situated in areas of low and high incidence of gastric cancer in Costa Rica were analyzed. Water samples were concentrated and the nitrocellulose filter was cultivated for later molecular identification of Helicobacter pylori using the glmM marker. The tumor necrosis factor-alpha inducing protein (Tipalpha TNF-α) was used as a pathogenicity marker of the strains found followed by the sequencing of two products. Information on water management by aqueduct operators was collected in order to establish statistical relationships. Results: A total of 112 water samples were analyzed. Successful cultivation and molecular identification using the glmM marker was achieved in 39% of samples from areas of high incidence and in 7.5% of samples from areas of low incidence. Two glmM gene PCR products were sequenced and confirmed as true positives. Conclusions: The highest prevalence rate of Helicobacter pylori was found in water from areas with a high incidence of gastric cancer. Additionally, significant statistical correlations were established among environmental conditions, drinking water management and incidence of gastric cancer.

In this work we present a theoretical study on electrons scattering by CH4 in the intermediate energy range. More specifically, we report integral and differential cross sections for electron scattering by CH4 in the （10 - 300） eV range by the Schwinger multichannel method using plane waves as a trial basis set （SMC-PW）. To include exchange effects we have used the Born-Ochkur model. Our aim is to study the numerical stability of the cross sections and our calculated results compared with experimental data and theoretical studies are encouraging.

This paper has demonstrated that there is great variation in the size range and chemical composition of metalliferous PM （particulate matter） present within Comarca Lagunera, M6xico due to the physiography of the terrain together the intense vehicular traffic, unpaved roads, cement and lime plants, marble quarries, brick plants, and the largest smelter of non-ferrous material in Latin America. Cascade impactor PM samples from six size ranges：〈 0.49 μm, 0.49-0.9 μm, 0.9-1.5μm, 1.5-3.0 p.m, 3.0-7.2 μm and 7.2-10 μm were collected from inside two stacks within G6mez Palacios and Torreon cities. ICP-AES （inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry） analysis on collected Whatman fiberglass filters demonstrates that the PM are matrices mostly constituted of carbonates and silicates with abundant fine metalliferous particles. The metals with the most concentrations averaged over all size ranges were Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Ti. The size distributions of metals detected in this work have been plotted as normalized histogram concentration of each size fraction, the total concentration, and the aerodynamic particle diameter, which is a useful method for comparing the contributions of coarse and fine particles to pollutant concentrations.

BACKGROUND Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection caused by the yeast-like encapsulated basidiomycetous fungus of the Cryptococcus neoformans(***)species *** fungi are ubiquitous in soil and bird droppings,and infection by them is an important global health concern,particularly in immunosuppressed patients,such as organ transplant recipients and those infected by the human immunodeficiency *** fungus usually enters the body through the respiratory tract,but extremely rare cases of infection acquired by transplantation of solid organs have been *** SUMMARY We report a case of disseminated cryptococcosis in a liver transplant recipient,diagnosed 2 wk after the *** patient initially presented with fever,hyponatremia and elevated transaminase levels,manifesting intense headache after a few *** cultures were positive for *** biopsy showed numerous fungal elements surrounded by gelatinous matrix and sparse granulomatous *** resonance imaging of the brain showed multiple small lesions with low signal in T2,peripheric enhancement and edematous halo,diffuse through the parenchyma but more concentrated in the subcortical *** with amphotericin B for 3 wk,followed by maintenance therapy with fluconazole,led to complete resolution of the *** recipients of both kidneys from the same donor also developed disseminated cryptococcosis,confirming the transplant as the source of *** organ donor lived in a rural area,surrounded by tropical rainforest,and had negative blood cultures prior to organ *** This case highlights the risk of transmission of fungal diseases,specifically of ***,through liver graft during liver transplantation.

Risk Factors for Fall in Elderly Patients:Follow-Up Study after Hospital Discharge

Introduction: Increased occurrences of falls after discharge are reported, especially in elderly people. Falls are a major cause of disability and identification of risk factors associated with falls is required to plan preventive actions. This study aims to determine the occurrence of falls in the three months after discharge and risk factors in elderly patients. Materials and Methods: 100 patients over 65 admitted to an Internal Medicine Ward participated. Questionnaires were given during hospitalization and three months after discharge. Follow-up information was unavailable for 31 patients (25 deceased, 6 unreachable). Results: Of those analyzed 52% were males with 80 ± 8.1 years (mean ± SD). Polymedication (p = 0.002), use of psychoactive drugs (p = 0.007), analgesics (p = 0.034) and walking devices (p = 0.006) were associated with a higher incidence of falls 6 months before hospitalization. Post-discharge follow-up was obtained for 69 patients: 18 reported falling during the follow-up. There was a higher risk of fall in patients with a history of falls in the 6 months before admission (p = 0.015 RR = 2.76). Patients who had one or more falls after discharge had a significantly shorter length of hospital stay compared to those who didn’t fall (p = 0.012). In multivariate logistic regression, we found that patients who were hospitalized more than 7 days had a lower risk of falling in the post-discharge period (OR = 0.195, p = 0.017) independently of the history of falls 6 months prior to admission. Conclusions: Further studies are required to validate the risk factors identified after discharge and to evaluate preventive measures. Elderly patients discharged from an Internal Medicine Ward should be screened to determine the risk of falls, specifically previous history of falls and medication. These patients should integrate a fall prevention program.

Dyeability of Polyester and Polyamide Fabrics Employing Citric Acid

The employment of sustainable chemicals, such as citric acid, represents a possibility for the development of textile dyeing processes. This study aimed to analyze the possibility of replacement of acetic acid (commonly used in textile processing) by citric acid in polyester and polyamide 6 dyeing processes. The utilization of citric acid as leveling agent for disperse dyestuffs was also investigated. Dyeing processes in turquoise color for these fabrics were performed employing citric and acetic acid. Color differences between dyeing processes and color fastness to water were evaluated. All the color dyeing differences were not significant and there was no transference in color fastness tests (grade 5). Otherwise, the differences among polyamide dyeing processes could be related to the efficiency of citric acid solution as sequestering agent. Notwithstanding citric acid to be more expensive than acetic acid and the need of previous dissolution by stirring, it could be advantageous for some formulations.
