The prevalence of pediatric obesity continues to increase worldwide,bringing with it various metabolic,functional,social,and psychological complications.1 Both the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity must be based on multidisciplinary approaches combining nutrition,physical activity(PA),and psychological support.2 As an essential element of these multicomponent strategies,regular physical activity has been acknowledged as having beneficial effects on children's and adolescents,body composition,physical fitness,and metabolic profile,as well as on their health-related quality of life,social and psychological health,and academic achievement.3,4 Given that only a relatively small proportion of children and adolescents meet the public health recommendations for PA,5 and given that weight loss exercise-based interventions suffer from a high attrition rate,there is a clear need for appropriate PAs.

Background: Narrow-diameter implants (3.0 - 3.5 mm range) have been introduced for the replacement of teeth with insufficient bone structure and/or limited mesiodistal or interimplant spaces, and appear to offer clinical results similar to those obtained with implants of greater diameter. Studies using extra-narrow-diameter implants (2.8 mm) are scarce. Case Presentation: A 59-year-old male patient received two extra-narrow-diameter implants, 2.8 × 11 mm in the region between elements 11 and 14. Together, two 3.5 × 8.5 mm SYSTHEX®platform 4.1 implants were installed in the region of elements 15 and 16 to provide greater stability in the occlusion. Of four previous implants on the maxillary left side, one in the region between the elements 23 and 24 that was located in a very apical position and vestibularized was removed. The provisional was already installed on the elements 11, 21, and 22 with the metal cores already prepared and with the Globteck®implants in the region of the elements 23, 24, and 27. The functional and esthetic results were satisfactory. Conclusions: Insertion of extra-narrow-diameter implants of 2.8 mm in the maxillary anterior region is a reliable option in a patient with absence of elements 12 and 13, restoring masticatory function and aesthetics in the upper arch.

Following the worldwide trend of developing heavy metal free materials, dental implants aren’t out of this tendency. Over the years, a number of techniques to condition the surface of dental implants have been designed and used such as oxide blasting, however the scientific medical community has been concerned about the use of these heavy metals which leads us to investigate and develop new conditioning techniques. The aim of the study was the analysis of the Systhex® implant surface in automatic system for the treatment of the surface with acid, where we can identify the surfaces purity level, pore size, deepness and especially the roughness proportionated by the technology of acid conditioning on the titanium surfaces of degree IV dental implants. We conclude that the automatic conditioning of acid attack promoted cleanliness, homogeneity and ideal roughness for the osseointegration process.

Posterior corneal astigmatism modifications after cataract surgery and its role on total corneal astigmatism

Background:In recent years posterior corneal astigmatism and its effect on total corneal astigmatism has been studied,with research showing that this can impact total *** study aims to ascertain if there is significant change in the posterior corneal astigmatism after cataract surgery and its impact on the total ***:Analysis of 76 eyes that underwent cataract surgery with monofocal intraocular lens *** topography was performed with Pentacam(OCULUS®)pre-and *** corneal astigmatism was calculated with the algorithm of vergence *** compared preoperative and postoperative changes in the magnitude and axis differences of anterior corneal curvature astigmatism,posterior corneal curvature astigmatism and the calculated total corneal *** calculated the correlation between the total preoperative astigmatism and the difference between total corneal astigmatism and anterior corneal ***:The mean preoperative and postoperative posterior astigmatism was 0.31±0.02 D,showing no significant differences before and after surgery(P=0.989).Statistically significant differences between the calculated total corneal astigmatism and anterior corneal astigmatism were registered preoperatively and postoperatively in the with-the-rule anterior(WTR)corneal astigmatism(P=0.004,P<0.0001);against-the-rule(ATR)anterior corneal astigmatism(P<0.0001,P<0.0001)and in the oblique(P=0.026,P=0.019)*** posterior corneal astigmatism and the total corneal astigmatism correlated positively with the differences between the total corneal and anterior corneal astigmatism(R=0.378,P=0.001).Conclusions:There were statistically significant differences between the magnitude of the total astigmatism and anterior corneal astigmatism,underlining the impact of posterior corneal astigmatism.A positive correlation between the preoperative posterior astigmatism and the difference between the total corneal and the ant

AIM:To assess the vitamin A status of patients with Crohn's disease(CD) by evaluating serum retinol levels and the relative dose response(RDR) test(liver retinol stores).METHODS:Vitamin A nutritional status was measured by serum retinol obtained by high performance liquid chromatography and the RDR test for evaluation of the hepatic *** composition was performed by densitometry by dual-energy X-ray *** A dietary intake was assessed from a semiquantitative food frequency ***:This study included 38 CD patients and 33 *** serum retinol concentrations were detected in 29% of CD patients vs 15% in controls(P < 0.005).The RDR test was positive in 37% of CD patients vs 12% in controls,which indicated inadequate hepatic vitamin A stores(P < 0.005).Individuals with hypovitaminosis A had lower BMI and body fat compared with those without this *** was no association between vitamin A deficiency and its dietary intake,ileal location,presence of disease activity and prior bowel ***:Patients with CD have higher prevalence of vitamin A deficiency,as assessed by two independent methods.

Background: Cystinosis is a multisystemic autosomal recessive deficiency of the lysosomal membrane transporter protein (cystinosin) caused by mutations in CTNS gene. Objective: This study summarizes the Portuguese experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with this rare disease over the past few years and reports recurrent mutations in the CTNS gene. Methods: Unrelated patients from different pediatric and adult hospitals all over Portugal with non-nephrotic proteinuria, hypercalciuria, hypokalemia impaired proximal reabsorption of amino acids, glycosuria and hypophosphatemia, suggestive of a Fanconi syndrome and ocular problems, were studied. Intra-leukocyte cystine levels were determined and molecular analysis was performed, to determine the presence or absence of the 57-kb deletion in CTNS, followed by direct sequencing of the coding exons of CTNS. Results: From 1998 to 2017, twenty-one cystinotic patients were biochemically diagnosed. From the remaining seventeen (four deceased), eleven were studied for CTNS gene. Five out of eleven patients were homozygous for the 57-kb deletion (10/22;45.5%), and other five were compound heterozygous for this variant (15/22;68.2%). The other mutations found were p.Q128X (c.721 C>T;2/22), p.S139F (c.755 C>T;4/22) and c.18-21delGACT (p.T7FfsX7;1/22). All of these seventeen cystinotic patients are in treatment. Approximately 84% are adults, 16% are young children, and 54.5% are kidney transplant recipient. Conclusions: The authors would like to emphasize the importance of first screening for the 57-kb deletion since it is very common in our population. This genetic study is the first in our country and it could be the basis for future genetic counseling in Portuguese population.
