Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Renalof® versus Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (EsWl) for the Treatment of Kidney stones ≤ 1 cm in Nicaragua

Objectives: To assess the efficiency in terms of cost-effectiveness (CE) of oral Renalof® treatment versus extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (EsWl) in the treatment of kidney stones ≤ 1 cm in Nicaragua. Methods: A cost-effectiveness economic evaluation was carried out based on the results obtained in the randomised, prospective, observational, single-blind, prospective, phase 2 clinical trial. Cost-effectiveness and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) were calculated. Economic data were obtained from the Economics Department of Clínica senior in Managua, Nicaragua. The monetary cost was expressed in Us dollars (UsD). Results: Treatment with Renalof® yielded a CE of $1,323.08/% remission, while EsWl was $9,498.54/% remission. The ICER shows that, in order to achieve a high percentage of kidney stone remission with EsWl, an extra $4,734.70 per patient must be invested. Conclusions: The use of Renalof® is shown to be a more cost-effective option than EsWl. It is recommended for the treatment of kidney stones ≤ 1 cm in size.

A Novel Approach to Measuring spatiotemporal Changes in social Vulnerability at the local level in Portugal

First histopathological study in kidneys of rodents naturally infected with leptospira pathogenic species from Yucatan, Mexico

Objective: To report the renal histological lesions in synanthropic rodents, Mus musculus and Rattus rattus, naturally infected with leptospira spp., captured in a rural community in Yucatan, Mexico. Methods: Kidney samples of synanthropic rodents were collected from a rural community in Yucatan, Mexico. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect leptospira spp. infection. Tissue kidney was fixed in 10% buffered formalin, processed according to the usual techniques for paraffin inclusion, cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and examined using a conventional electronic microscope. Results: A total of 187 rodents were captured. Nine individuals(4.8%) were positive for leptospira spp. in the molecular analysis. All renal lesions observed in the histopathological study had been reported previously for leptospira spp. infection. Conclusions: The histopathological lesions are present in the kidneys, plus the results of the polymerase chain reaction confirm that these rodents are true carriers of leptospira spp.

On the Absence of zeros of Riemann zeta-Function Out of ℜ(z) = 1/2

This work shows, after a brief introduction to Riemann zeta function , the demonstration that all non-trivial.zeros of this function lies on the so-called “critical line”,, the one Hardy demonstrated in his famous work that infinite countable zeros of the above function can be found on it. Thus, out of this strip, the only remaining zeros of this function are the so-called “trivial ones” . After an analytical introduction reminding the existence of a germ from a generic zero lying in , we show through a Weierstrass-Hadamard representation approach of the above germ that non-trivial.zeros out of cannot be found.

Particle shape characterisation and classification using automated microscopy and shape descriptors in batch manufacture of particulate solids

It is known that size alone, which is often defined as the volume-equivalent diameter, is not sufficient to characterize many particulate products. The shape of crystalline products can be as important as size in many applications, Traditionally, particulate shape is often defined by several simple descriptors such as the maximum length and the aspect ratio. Although these descriptors are intuitive, they result in a loss of information about the original shape. This paper presents a method to use principal component analysis to derive simple latent shape descriptors from microscope images of particulate products made in batch processes, and the use of these descriptors to identify batch-to-batch variations. Data from batch runs of both a laboratory crystalliser and an industrial crystallisation reactor are analysed using the described approach. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons with the use of traditional shape descriptors that have nhwical meanings and Fourier shape descriptors are also made.

Altered liver Gene Expression Due to Hypertension and Age in Rats

Hypertension and metabolic syndrome, both of which increase with age, are multifactorial disorders. Their etiology is complex, making it challenging to isolate involved genes. This study aimed to characterize the hepatic gene expression in spontaneously hypertensive rats (sHR) at different ages. Blood pressure in sHR was determined by tail-cuff method at one and three months of age. Hepatic RNA was isolated and gene expression was compared using microarrays. Comparison between sHR and normotensive rats revealed significant variation in gene expression: 98 genes were upregulated and 122 were downregulated in sHR;while 88 genes were upregulated and 139 genes were downregulated in age-matched normotensive rats. Furthermore, within the sHR group, 110 genes were found to be upregulated and 168 genes downregulated across different ages. Analyses via the Gene Ontology, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways revealed that several genes are potentially implicated in both, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. The results suggest that sHR display variations in gene expression due to aging, and when compared to normotensive rats. These variations could contribute to the development of hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Microarray studies involving older rats are necessary to further validate these findings.

Background: Evidence shows an association between grip strength and health;however, grip strength cut-offs for the detection of metabolic syndrome(Mets) in latin American populations are scarce. The purpose of this study was to determine cut-offs of normal.zed grip strength(NGs)for the detection of Mets in a large nonrepresentative sample of a collegiate student population from ***: A total of 1795 volunteers(61.4% female;age = 20.68 ± 3.10 years, mean ± sD), ranging between 18 and 30 years of age participated in the study. strength was estimated using a handheld dynamometer and normal.zed to body mass(handgrip strength(kg)/body mass(kg)). Anthropometrics, serum lipids indices, blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose were measured. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Mets was defined as including ≥3 of the 5 metabolic abnormalities according to the International Diabetes Federation definition. A metabolic risk score was computed from the following components: waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, and systolic and diastolic blood ***: Receiver operating curve analysis showed significant discriminatory accuracy of NGs in identifying the thresholds and risk *** strength was associated with increased prevalence of Mets. In males, weak, intermediate, and strong NGs values at these points were0.615, respectively. In females, these cut-off points were 0.437, ***: Our sex-specific cut-offs of NGs could be incorporated into a clinical setting for identifying college students at cardiometabolic disease risk.
