Trace m.tal concentrations in hairs of three bat species from.an urbanized area in Germ.ny

m.tal-contam.nated soils and sedim.nts are widespread in urbanized areas due to atm.spheric deposition close to em.ssion sources. These m.tals are bio-available for organism., e.g., insects, and accum.late in food chains of insectivorous *** bats, which live in urban regions and ingest large am.unts of food relative to their body m.ss, are at risk of being poisoned due to the accum.lation of trace m.tals. To determ.ne species-specific trace m.tal contents in bats from.urban environm.nts, hair sam.les were analyzed by ICP-OES. Observed trace m.tal concentrations were related to species-specific foraging habitat, prey spectrum.and degree of synanthropy. The species studied were Pipistrellus pipistrellus, m.otis daubentonii and Nyctalus noctula. P. pipistrellus showed the highest concentrations of lead and zinc and slightly higher concentrations of cadm.um.than the other two species, which was related to its high degree of synanthropy with foraging habitat m.stly located in cities. In contrast, N. noctula displayed the highest contents of m.nganese and copper. The reason m.ght be found in its prey spectrum. as N. noctula feeds m.inly on beetles that are caught in cultured areas. Trace m.tal concentrations determ.ned in hair sam.les of m. daubentonii ranged between the values of P. pipistrellus and N. noctula, probably reflecting an interm.diate level of *** correlations were observed between the concentrations of cadm.um.and lead and those of m.nganese and copper. Hair sam.les from.bats are suitable m.nitoring tools to study trace m.tal exposure and can be used to determ.ne differences in trace m.tal levels between species.

Com.aring surgical efficiencies between phacoem.lsification system.: a single surgeon retrospective study of 2000 eyes

AIm. To com.are under sim.lar conditions intraoperative surgical efficiencies m.trics between an active fluidics and a gravity based phacoem.lsification ***: Adult patients who were diagnosed with a cataract that com.rom.sed visual acuity inferior to 20/40 were included in the study. Patients were excluded from.the study if they had a history of severe retinal disorders, clinically significant corneal endothelial dystrophy or history of corneal disease. All phacoem.lsification surgeries were perform.d by a single surgeon. Both phacoem.lsification system. used the 0.9 m. 45-degree aspiration bypass system.Intrepid Balanced tip and the 0.9 m. Intrepid Ultra infusion sleeve. All cataracts were classified using the Lens Opacities Classification System.III, cum.lative dissipated energy(CDE) and aspiration fluids were m.asured in each ***: Totally 2000 eyes were included in the study. Phacoem.lsification was perform.d in 1000(50%) eyes with an active fluid dynam.cs system.and in 1000(50%) eyes with a gravity-based fluidic system. m.an CDE until fracture of the lens was 1.1 and 1.9 percent-seconds and total m.an CDE used was 5.6 and 7.2 percent-seconds using an active fluidics dynam.cs system.and gravity-based fluidic system. respectively(Pm.an aspiration fluids used were 70 m.L using an active fluidics dynam.cs system.and 85 m.L using a gravity-based fluidic system.Pm.d under sim.lar conditions(sam. surgeon, phaco tip and sleeve) with the active fluidics dynam.cs system.required significantly lower CDE and aspiration fluids.

m.nitoring program. for nesting turtles around the world have been im.ortant to build up a m.trix of inform.tion for better com.rehension of their behaviour and dispersion. The Western Indian Ocean has several m.nitoring program. that are being used to reveal m.gration routes, phylogenetic interconnections and nesting behaviour patterns. We determ.ned the nesting param.ters for 69 records of hawksbill turtles collected during the Vam.zi Island m.nitoring program. We also determ.ned carapace m.asurem.nts param.ters of the turtles caught by fisherm.n in the area and give som. considerations to im.rove the conservation of this species. Results show that the island receives hawksbill fem.les all year long. Vam.zi is a sm.ll nesting ground for this species, with an incubation period of 60.9 ± 10.6 days and a high reproductive rate. The turtles’ carapace m.asurem.nts (SCL 42.0 ± SD 9.0 cm. revealed the existence of young individuals, foraging near the island, and their vulnerability to the fishing practices. This study strongly defends the need to identify m.re developm.ntal and nesting spots, to be protected near Vam.zi, to establish a solid network of m.rine reserves and corridors in the north of the m.zam.ique Channel.

Using Lean m.nufacturing(Lm.tools in production processes is crucial for com.anies’econom.c,environm.ntal,and social sustainability *** study shows a structural equation m.del(SEm.that shows the relationship between Lm.Tools like Kaizen(KAI),Gem.a(GEm.,Value Stream.m.pping(VSm.and Key Perform.nce Indicator(KPI)with Econom.c Sustainability(ECS).Seven hypotheses were evaluated with data from.179 responses to a questionnaire about the m.xican m.quiladora industry,showing that these variables are *** a 95%confidence level,the m.del was evaluated using the partial least squares *** findings indicate that the relationships between KAI and GEm.and KAI and VSm.have the strongest relationship,followed by VSm.and ECS;however,VSm.has the strongest effect on *** on these findings,it is recom.ended that m.nagers adopt a continuous im.rovem.nt(KAI)approach based on working directly on the shop floor(GEm.and VSm.to support their decisions regarding econom.c growth(ECS).

Fluorescent Proteins(FP)can be applied as biom.rkers and biosensors in the industrial and m.dical fields,but their large-scale use,especially for new industrial applications,is lim.ted due to their low ***,the discovery of additives capable of preserving the activity of FP at room.tem.erature and under stress conditions can help to expand and facilitate their com.ercial *** this goal,we evaluated the application of 1-alkyl-3-m.thylim.dazolium.chloride-based([C_(n)m.m.Cl)ionic liquids(ILs)as additives to preserve the activity of Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein(EGFP)at different storage tim.s and under unfavorable ***[C_(n)m.m.Cl solutions(at 0.100 m.l L^(-1))were able to preserve EGFP fluorescence for longer than the phosphatesaline buffer(PBS)and NaCl solutions,increasing its fluorescence m.nifestation from.1 to 3 m.nths.[C_(n)m.m.Cl with shorter to m.dium.cationic alkyl chains were the m.st effective in preserving EGFP fluorescence.[C_(n)m.m.Cl also protected EGFP activity in the presence of the surfactant SDS,the acid guanidine hydrochloride,and H_(2)O_(2).Therefore,[C_(n)m.m.Cl can be added to aqueous solutions to preserve EGFP fluorescence activity at room.tem.erature for longer storage tim.s and to reduce the negative im.act of denaturing agents on ***,there is a m.ssive potential for the application of ILs as additives to preserve FP in the long-term.without refrigeration and under unfavorable conditions,and this is fundam.ntal to enable expansion of FP in industrial and com.ercial applications.

A m.gneto-optical sensor, using a dual quadrature polarim.tfic processing schem., was evaluated for current m.tering and protection applications in high voltage lines. Sensor calibration and resolution were obtained in different operational conditions using illum.nation in the 1550-nm.band. Results obtained indicated the feasibility of interrogating such sensor via the optical ground wire （OPGW） link installed in standard high power grids. The polarim.tric bulk optical current sensor also was theoretically studied, and the effects of different sources of error considering practical deploym.nt were evaluated. In particular, the interference from.external m.gnetic fields in a tree-phase system.was analyzed.

Com.arison of 3 m.Tm.Petrifilm.Tm.Aerobic Count Plates with Pour Plates for Determ.nation of Aerobic Plate Counts in Ferm.nted Chile m.sh

Ferm.nted chile pepper m.sh is a m.jor food product in New m.xico. There are few reports on the ferm.ntation process or on m.thods to m.nitor it, In the current study we exam.ned a pour plate procedure with an overlay using plate count agar and 3 m.m.Petrifilm.m.Aerobic Count （AC） plates for determ.nation of total aerobic bacterial counts during the ferm.ntation of chile m.sh. Fifty chile m.sh sam.les were obtained directly from.com.ercial ferm.ntation vats and exam.ned within 2 h of collection. Serial dilutions of the chile m.sh were prepared in Butterfield＇s Phosphate Buffer. 1 m. portions of the diluted sam.les were aliquoted in duplicate onto the AC plates and into em.ty Petri dishes. Plate count agar was poured and once the plates had solidified, they were overlaid with about 10 m. of PCA to m.nim.ze spreaders. Plates were incubated at 30 ℃ for 48 h and enum.rated. Paired difference tests were conducted on log transform.d data to com.are the results of the two plating procedures. For com.ercial chile m.sh sam.les, we did not show any significant differences between the AC plate counts and the pour plate counts （α = 0.05）, 3 m.m.Petrifilm.m.AC plates are a good alternative to pour plates for the determ.nation of the total aerobic counts in ferm.nted chile m.shes.
