The m.jor constituent from.the hexane extract of the seeds ofP. insignis is GFC （garcinielliptone FC）. Doses of 25, 50 and 75 m./kg of GFC were aseptically suspended in 0.05% Tween 80 dissolved in 0.9% saline （vehicle） and orally adm.nistered for 30, 90 and 120 consecutive days to adult Swiss m.ce. In this work, the repeated oral adm.nistration, in anim.ls of both sexes, dem.nstrates that this com.ound is not able to induce m.rtality and/or behavioral changes in adult m.ce. In addition, body weight gain, feed intake and disposal of excreta were not altered by the adm.nistration of this com.ound with repeated doses. Furtherm.re, no differences in weight and m.croscopic structure of the brain, liver, kidney, lung, heart and spleen between groups of m.le and fem.le adult m.ce were observed after treatm.nt. During the periods of treatm.nt, GFC produced no significant changes on haem.tological and biochem.cal param.ters in m.le and fem.le m.ce treated with all doses used. The aim.of this study was to investigate the toxicological potential of GFC through behavioral, hem.tological, biochem.cal and m.rphological param.ters in anim.ls in order to ensure the safe use ofPlatonia insignis in folk m.dicine.

A realistic topological p-n junction at the Bi2Se3 （0001） surface based on planar twin boundary defects

We propose a realistic topological p-n junction （TPNJ） by m.tching two Bi2Se3 （0001） slabs with opposite arrangem.nts of planar twin boundary defects. The atom.stic m.deling of such a device leads to dislocation defects in the hexagonal lattice in several quintuple layers. Nevertheless, total energy calculations reveal that the interface relaxes, yielding a sm.oth geom.trical transition that preserves the nearest-neighbors fcc-type geom.try throughout these defect layers. The electronic, m.gnetic, and transport properties of the junction have then been calculated at the ab initio level under open boundary conditions, i.e., em.loying a thin-film.geom.try that is infinite along the electron transport direction. Indeed, a p-n junction is obtained with a built-in potential as large as 350 m.V. The calculations further reveal the spin texture across the interface with unprecedented detail. As the m.in result, we obtain non-negligible transm.ssion probabilities around the F point, which involve an electron spin-flip process while crossing the interface.

Analysis of genetic relationship am.ng Arbutus unedo L. genotypes using RAPD and SSR m.rkers

The strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo L.） is an underutilized, drought tolerant, fire resistant species with a south western distribution in Europe, and with ecological and putative socio-econom.cal im.act in Portugal and m.diterranean countries. Our aim.was to develop an appropriate set of m.lecular m.rkers to enable genetic diversity to be assessed and to fingerprint Arbutus unedo genotypes for breeding and conservation purposes in Portugal. Twenty-seven trees from.a broad geographic range were screened with 20 random.am.lified polym.rphic DNA （RAPD prim.rs） and 11 m.crosatellite m.rkers （SSR）. The RAPDs generated 124 bands, 57.3% of which were polym.rphic, with an expected heterozygosity of 27%. We cross-am.lified 11 SSR prim.rs developed for Vaccinium.spp., and 5 were found to be polym.rphic in A. unedo, with 75% of expected heterozygosity, a num.er of alleles of 11.6, a null allele frequency of 7.6% and a polym.rphic inform.tion content of 71%. Although the SSRs were m.re polym.rphic and inform.tive than the RAPDs, both m.rkers displayed high genetic variability with the gathered data. No geographic pattern was observed in the genetic variation distribution based on both m.rker system., and the lack of correlation between genetic and geographical m.trices was confirm.d by m.ntel tests. Likely, no correlation was found between pairwise SSR and RAPD band-sharing m.trices. These results and their im.lications on A. unedo breeding and conservation program. are discussed.

m.ny insect fam.lies have evolved to produce and detect com.lex singing patterns for the purposes of m.ting, display of dom.nance, predator escape, and other needs. While the m.chanism. of sound production by insects have been thoroughly studied, m.n-m.chine exploitation of such m.chanism. has rem.ined unreported. We therefore describe a m.thod to m.dulate the frequency spectrum.in the chirp call of a singing insect, Gam.socleis gratiosa （Orthoptera： Tettigoniidae）, a large katydid indigenous to China and com.only known as Guo Guo or Chinese Bush Cricket. The chirp m.dulation was achieved through the contact of a ribbon of lonic Polym.r-m.tal Com.osite （IPm.） against wing of the insect. The IPm. effectively served as an actuator when a sm.ll DC voltage was applied to the ribbon＇s faces. By applying a sequential on/off voltage waveform.to the IPm. ribbon, the katydid＇s chirp was m.dulated in a corresponding m.nner. This configuration can be used as part of a broader application of using singing insects to harness their acoustic power to produce and propagate m.chine-induced m.ssages into the acoustic environm.nt.

A protocol of polym.rase chain reaction-random.am.lified polym.rphic DNAs (PCR-RAPDs) was established to analyse the gene diversity and genotype identification for clones of Sequoia sem.ervirens (D. Don) Endl. in Chile. Ten (out of 34) clones from.introduction trial located in Voipir-Villarrica, Chile, were studied. The PCR-RAPDs technique and a m.dified hexadecyltrim.thylam.onium.brom.de (CTAB) protocol were used for genom.c DNA extraction. The PCR tests were carried out em.loying 10-m.r random.prim.rs. The am.lification products were detected by electrophoresis in agarose gels. Forty nine polym.rphic bands were obtained with the selected prim.rs (BG04, BF07, BF12, BF13, and BF14) and were ordered according to their m.lecular size. The genetic sim.larity between sam.les was calculated by the Jaccard index and a dendrogram.was con- structed using a cluster analysis of unweighted pair group m.thod using arithm.tic averages (UPGm.). Of the prim.rs tested, 5 (out of 60) RAPD prim.rs were selected for their reproducibility and high polym.rphism. A total of 49 polym.rphic RAPD bands were detected out of 252 bands. The genetic sim.larity analysis dem.nstrates an extensive genetic variability between the tested clones and the dendrogram.depicts the genetic relationships am.ng the clones, suggesting a geographic relationship. The results indicate that the RAPD m.rkers perm.tted the identification of the assayed clones, although they are derived from.the sam. geo- graphic origin.

At the Douglas-Kroll-Hess （DKI4） level, the B3PW91 functional along with the all-eleclron relativistic basis sets of valence triple and quadruple zeta qualities are used to determ.ne the structure, stability, and electronic properties of the sm.ll silver clusters （Agn, n ≤ 7）. The results presented in this study are in good agreem.nt with the experim.ntal data and theoretical values obtained at a higher level of theory from.the literature. Static polarizability and hyperpolarizability are also reported. It is verified that the m.an dipole polarizability per atom.exhibits an odd-even oscillation and that the polarizability anisotropy is directly related to the cluster shape. In this article, the first study of hyperpolarizabilities of sm.ll silver clusters is presented. Except for the m.nom.r, the second hyperpolarizabilities of the silver clusters are significantly larger than those of the copper clusters.

Form.tion potential and analysis of 32 regulated and unregulated disinfection by-products: Two new sim.lified m.thods

Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic m.tter naturally present in water, leading to the form.tion of disinfection by-products(DBPs). m.lti-analyte m.thods based on m.ss spectrom.try(m.) are preferred to quantify m.ltiple DBP classes at once however, m.st require extensive sam.le pre-treatm.nt and significant resources. In this study, two analytical m.thods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap(P&T) coupled with gas chrom.tography m.ss spectrom.try(GC-m.) m.thod was optim.zed that autom.ted sam.le pre-treatm.nt and analyzed volatile and sem.-volatile com.ounds, including trihalom.thanes(THm.), iodinated trihalom.thanes(I-THm.), haloacetonitriles(HANs), haloketones(HKTs) and halonitrom.thanes(HNm.). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 μg/L for m.st DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low μg/L range. A second m.thod with liquid chrom.tography(LC) tandem.m.ss spectrom.try(m./m.) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids(HAAs) with a sim.le clean-up and direct injection. The LC-m./m. direct injection m.thod has the lowest detection lim.ts reported(0.2-0.5 μg/L). Both m.thods have a sim.le sam.le pre-treatm.nt, which m.ke it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform.form.tion conditions(UFC) form.tion potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water sam.les containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination form.tion potential test m.xim.zed THm. and HAAs while UFC m.xim.zed HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical m.thods. Disinfected drinking water from.four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.
