The temperature and.soil moisture cond.tions as well as vegetation patterns were stud.ed.to d.scribe the habitat and.to mod.l the life cycle of Melanoplusfrigid.s, a true alpine grasshopper of the Scand.s. In the low alpine belt of the Norwegian Scand.s the species colonizes only the warmest microhabitats with maximum soil surface temperatures of 31℃. Vegetation of these habitats consists of shrub-rich heath d.minated.by Vaccinium myrtillus and.Calluna vulgaris. Using continuously measured.temperature d.ta, the d.velopment times for four d.fferent seasons were mod.led.and.related.to field.observations. The maximum d.lay of ad.lt molt was estimated.to amount to 3 weeks, the d.lay being d.termined.by the variation in spring temperature cond.tions between d.fferent years. The possibilities of using M. frigid.s as an ind.cator organism of climate change effects on alpine zoo-coenoses of the Scand.s are d.scussed.

Our research ad.resses questions about how micro-climate affects activity abund.nce of a common and.wid.spread.harvestman in an alpine ecosystem. Activity patterns of the Harvestman Mitopus morio(Fabricius, 1779) were stud.ed.along d.fferent alpine grad.ents in the central Norwegian Scand.s. Within a nested.d.sign, we surveyed.18 alpine habitats with pitfall traps and.microclimatological equipment along oceanic-continental, two elevational, and.fine-scaled. microtopographic grad.ents. Sites in the oceanic region of the Scand.s showed.generally higher abund.nce of M. morio than sites in the continental region. Furthermore, along the elevational grad.ent, mid.le-alpine sites showed.higher abund.nces than low-alpine sites. These general patterns are best explained.by higher humid.ty in the oceanic region and.in the mid.lealpine belt. Focusing at a finer scale, i.e. one elevational level within each region, revealed.partly opposing activity patterns within relatively short d.stances. While in the western mid.le-alpine belt these patterns were best explained.by humid.tyrelated.measures but now with higher activity abund.nce d.ring d.ier cond.tions, in the d.ier eastern mid.le-alpine belt heat sums rather than humid.ty were found.to be the best explanatoryvariables for the observed.patterns. Hence, our results imply a pronounced.d.fferent reaction of the two populations toward. climatic variables that partly even contrad.ct the previously d.scribed.general pattern. Regard.ess whether these d.fferences in activity abund.nce in M. morio are a form of phenotypic plasticity or ad.ptation, our find.ngs stress the importance of d.tailed.autecological knowled.e combined.with fine-scaled.climatic measurements when aiming at pred.ctions about possible future ecosystem structures and.spatiotemporal phenomena. M. morio proves to be an id.al biogeographic mod.l organism for und.rstand.ng spatio-temporal responses of alpine ecosystems und.r mod.fied.climatic cond.tions.

Id.ntifying the genetic mechanisms that und.rpin the evolution of new organ and.tissue systems is an aim of evolutionary d.velopmental biology. Comparative functional genetic stud.es between angiosperms and.bryophytes can d.fine those genetic changes that were responsible for d.velopmental innovations. Here, we report the generation of a transcriptome atlas covering most phases in the life cycle of the mod.l bryo- phyte Physcomitrella patens, includ.ng d.tailed.sporophyte d.velopmental progression. We id.ntified.a comprehensive set of sporophyte-specific transcription factors, and.found.that many of these genes have homologs in angiosperms that function in d.velopmental processes such as flowering and.shoot branching. d.letion of the PpTCP5 transcription factor results in d.velopment of supernumerary sporangia attached.to a single seta, suggesting that it negatively regulates branching in the moss sporophyte. Given that TCP genes repress branching in angiosperms, we suggest that this activity is ancient. Finally, compar- ison of P. patens and.Arabid.psis thaliana transcriptomes led.us to the id.ntification of a conserved.core of transcription factors expressed.in tip-growing cells. We id.ntified.mod.fications in the expression patterns of these genes that could.account for d.velopmental d.fferences between P. patens tip-growing cells and.A. thaliana pollen tubes and.root hairs.

Chloroplast-located.proteins which are encod.d.by the nuclear genome have to be imported.from the cytosol into the organelle in a posttranslational manner. Among these nuclear-encod.d.chloroplast proteins are the light- harvesting chlorophyll a/b-bind.ng proteins （LHCPs）. After translation in the cytosol, precursor proteins of LHCPs are imported.via the TOC/TIC translocase, processed.to their mature size to insert into thylakoid.membranes where they recruit chlorophylls a and.b to form pigment-protein complexes. The translocation of proteins is a highly regulated.process which employs several regulators. To analyze whether CAO （chlorophyll a oxigenase） which converts chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b at the inner chloroplast membrane, is one of these regulators, we performed.import reactions utilizing a homozygous loss-of-function mutant （cao-1）. We imported.in vitro translated.and.35S-labeled.precursor proteins of light- harvesting proteins of photosystem II LHCB1, LHCB4, and.LHCB5 into chloroplasts isolated.from cao-1 and.show that import of precursor proteins and.their processing to mature forms are not impaired.in the mutant. Therefore, regulation of the import machinery cannot be responsible for the d.creased.stead.-state levels of light-harvesting complex （LHC） proteins. Regulation d.es not take place at the transcriptional level either, because Lhcb mRNAs are not d.wn-regulated. Ad.itionally, red.ced.stead.-state levels of LHCPs also d. not occur d.e to posttranslational turnover of non-functional LHCPs in chloroplasts. Taken together, our d.ta show that plants in the absence of CAO and.therefore d.void.of chlorophyll b are not influenced.in their import behavior of LHC proteins.

We present integrated.optic build.ng blocks and.functional photonic d.vices based.on amorphous siliconon-insulator technology. Efficient d.ep-etched.fiber-to-chip grating couplers, low-loss single-mod. photonic wire waveguid.s, and.compact power splitters are presented. Based.on the sub-μm photonic wires, 2 × 2 Mach–Zehnd.r interferometers and.ad./d.op microring resonators(MRRs) with low d.vice footprints and.high finesse up to 200 were realized.and.stud.ed. Compact polarization rotators and.splitters with ≥10 d.B polarization extinction ratio were fabricated.for the polarization management on-chip. The tuning and.trimming capabilities of the material platform are d.monstrated.with efficient microheaters and.a permanent d.vice trimming method. which enabled.the realization of energy-efficient photonic circuits. Wavelength multiplexers in the form of cascad.d.filter banks and.4 × 4 routers based.on MRR switches are presented. Fabrication imperfections were analyzed.and.permanently corrected.by an accurate laser-trimming method. thus enabling eight-channel multiplexers with record.low metrics of sub-m W static power consumption and.≤1°C temperature overhead. The high quality of the functional d.vices, the high tuning efficiency, and.the excellent trimming capabilities d.monstrate the potential to realize low-cost, d.nsely integrated. and.ultralow-power 3d.stacked.photonic circuits on top of CMOS microelectronics.

A nanofabrication method.for the prod.ction of ultra-d.nse planar metallic nanowire arrays scalable to wafer-size is presented. The method.is based.on an efficient template d.position process to grow d.verse metallic nanowire arrays with extreme regularity in only two steps. First, Ⅲ-Ⅴ semicond.ctor substrates are irrad.ated.by a low-energy ion beam at an elevated.temperature, forming a highly ord.red.nanogroove pattern by a ＂reverse epitaxy＂ process d.e to self-assembly of surface vacancies. Second. d.verse metallic nanowire arrays （Au, Fe, Ni, Co, FeAl alloy） are fabricated.on these Ⅲ-Ⅴ templates by d.position at a glancing incid.nce angle. This method.allows for the fabrication of metallic nanowire arrays with period.cities d.wn to 45 nm scaled.up to wafer-size fabrication. As typical noble and.magnetic metals, the Au and.Fe nanowire arrays prod.ced.here exhibited.large anisotropic optical and.magnetic properties, respectively. The excitation of localized.surface plasmon resonances （LSPRs） of the Au nanowire arrays resulted.in a high electric field.enhancement, which was used.to d.tect phthalocyanine （CoPc） in surface-enhanced.Raman scattering （SERS）. Furthermore, the Fe nanowire arrays showed.a very high in-plane magnetic anisotropy of approximately 412 mT, which may be the largest in-plane magnetic anisotropy field.yet reported.that is solely ind.ced.via shape anisotropy within the plane of a thin film.
