Effect of salinity and acidity on bioleaching activity of mesophilic and extremely thermophilic bacteria

The effects of bacterial strain, salinity and pH on the bioleaching of a complex ore using mesophilic and extremely thermophilic bacteria were investigated and the statistical analysis of the results was performed using ERGUn’s test. The extreme thermophiles were shown to display superior kinetics of dissolution of zinc compared with the mesophiles as confirmed by the statistical analysis. Bioleaching performance of the extreme thermophiles is found to improve in response to the increase in acidity (pH from 2.0 to 1.0) whilst the activity of the mesophiles is adversely affected by decreasing pH. Statistical analysis of the bioleaching data indicates that the effect of pH is insignificant in the range of pH 1.0-1.2 for the extreme thermophiles and pH 1.4-2.0 for the mesophiles. Salinity is shown to have a suppressing effect on the mesophiles. However, the extreme thermophiles appear to be halophilic in character as they could operate efficiently under saline conditions (1%-4%Cl- (w/v)).

Magnetically stabilized beds are packed beds subjected to fluid-driven deformation and controlled by magnetically induced interparticle forces. This paper deals with magnetically stabilized beds as deformable porous media and describes their application in dust filtration. The Richardson-Zaki scaling law, U/Ut = ε^n describes the field controlled bed expansion via the exponent n, that yields a porosity-dependent flow length scale dc = dpε^n. The paper addresses two issues：（i） deformation characteristics by assuming homogeneous bed expansion and a definition of bed variable flow length scale; （ii） dust filtration characteristics such as filter coefficient, specific deposit and filtration efficiency expressed in terms of the variable flow length scale and illustrated by experimental data.

Currently,1% of the United States population holds a diagnosis for celiac disease(CD),however,a more recently recognized and possibly related condition,"non-celiac gluten sensitivity"(nCGS)has been suggested to affect up to 6%of the United States *** reliable clinical tests for CD exist,diagnosing individuals affected by nCGS is still complicated by the lack of reliable biomarkers and reliance upon a broad set of intestinal and extra intestinal symptoms possibly provoked by *** has been proposed to exhibit an innate immune response activated by gluten and several other wheat *** present,an enormous food industry has developed to supply gluten-free products(GFP)with GFP sales in 2014 approaching$1 billion,with estimations projecting sales to reach$2 billion in the year *** enormous demand for GFP also reflects a popular misconception among consumers that gluten avoidance is part of a healthy lifestyle *** of nCGS and other gluten related disorders(e.g.,irritable bowel syndrome)call for a review of current distinctive diagnostic criteria that distinguish each,and identification of biomarkers selective or specific for *** aim of this paper is to review our current understanding of nCGS,highlighting the remaining challenges and questions which may improve its diagnosis and treatment.

Pest preference and subsequent susceptibility of a host individual is likely related to previous growth patterns in that *** ash borer(Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire)is a pestiferous beetle introduced to north America from *** all species of ash are susceptible to attack,some individual trees appear to survive *** selected ash trees in southeastern Michigan,collected cores and categorized trees as high tolerance to emerald ash borer attack(high overall health,low crown dieback),low tolerance(low overall health,high crown dieback)and intermediate tolerance(in-between the other categories).We artificially wounded trees and measured wound closure after 3 *** width indices were not correlated between high and low tolerance *** slopes comparing growth and years were significantly different between the three tolerance categories,with high tolerance trees having the steepest *** closure was greatest in high tolerance *** tolerance trees demonstrating more rapid(steeper regression slope),consistent(lower variance),and effective(greater wound closure)*** vigorously growing trees likely had more capacity to repair damage caused by emerald ash borer,leading to healthier trees in our *** previous host growth patterns to health may have implications related to identifying individual trees potentially tolerant to attack.

Despite all efforts,long-term changes in the adult sex ratios of breeding duck populations are still unclear;this uncertainty is especially true for male-bias populations,which are often under the scrutiny of researchers lacking convenient results for the active protection of endangered *** with male-bias populations are usually strongly affected by a decline in population size that leads to a higher extinction *** this study,we examined our long-term data of the abundance of breeding populations in six duck species(Mallard Anas platyrhynchos,Gadwall Mareca strepera,Red-crested Pochard netta rufina,Common Pochard Aythya ferina,Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula,and Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula)from fishponds in South Bohemia,Czechia,between 2004 and *** evidence was used to assess long-term changes in the adult sex ratio in these breeding populations and investigate the possible effects of the nAO index(north Atlantic Oscillation index)on them,indicating climate conditions in *** determined a long-term decrease of the proportion of females in the breeding season in two of the six examined species:Common Pochard and Red-crested Pochard,which is driven by the long-term increase in the number of males in contrast to the decreasing or stable number of females likely caused by different migration behaviours between females and *** the case of Common Pochard,in breeding populations,we estimated 60-65%of males in the early 2000s rising to 75-80%in the early ***,we establish no significant effects linked to climate conditions of the previous winter in these species as a crucial cause of the changes of the proportion of females in the breeding population.

The nanostructure composite coating is obtained via plasma spraying of Al2O3-13 wt pct TiO2 powder. Brittle and hard lamella results from melted nanostructured powder. Ductile nanostructured matrix forms from unmelted nanostructured particles. Through the adjustment of constituent and nanostructure, hardness/strength and toughness/ductility are balanced and overall properties of the structure composite are achieved.

Fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)bars are widely used as internal reinforcement replacing the conventional steel bars to prevent from *** the different types of FRP bars,basalt FRP(BFRP)bars have been used in different structural applications and,herein,three already tested concrete beams reinforced with BFRP bars are analyzed using three-dimensional(3-D)finite element analysis(FEA).The beams were tested in four-point *** the FEA the behavior of concrete is simulated using the^Concrete-Damaged Plasticity^^model offered in ABAQUS *** research presented here presents a calibrated model for nonlinear FEA of BFRP concrete beams to predict their response considering both the accuracy and the computational *** calibration process showed that the concrete model should be regularized using a mesh-dependent characteristic length and material-dependent post-yield fracture and crushing energies to provide accurate mesh-size independent *** results were compared to the test results with regard to failure load and crack *** the test results and the numerical results were compared to the design predictions of ACI 440.1R-15 and CSA S806-12,where CSA S806-12 seems to overestimate the shear strength for two beams.

The solution to this extremal problem is called the p-Bieberbach polynomial of degree n for the pair （G, 0）. We study the uniform convergence of the p-Bieberbach polynomials Bn,p（z） to the φ（z） on G^- with interior and exterior zero angles determined depending on the properties of boundary arcs and the degree of their ＂touch＂.
