Al.hough the functional.neuroanatomy of the midbrain dopamine （mDA） system has been wel. characterized, the l.terature regarding its capacity to innervate the hippocampal.formation has been inconsistent. The l.ck of expression of definitive markers for dopaminergic fibers, such as the dopamine transporter, in the hippocampus has compl.cated studies in this area. Here we have used immunohistochemical.techniques to characterize the tyrosine hydroxyl.se expressing fiber network in the rat hippocampus, combined with retrograde tracing from the dentate gyrus to assess the capacity for afferent innervation by mDA neurons. The resul.s indicate that virtual.y al. tyrosine hydroxyl.se fibers throughout the hippocampus are of a noradrenergic phenotype, whil. the overl.ing cortex contains both dopaminergic and noradrenergic fiber networks. Furthermore, retrograde tracing from the dentate gyrus robustl. l.bel. tyrosine hydroxyl.se-immunoreactive noradrenergic neurons in the l.cus coerul.us but not mDA neurons.

Social.rel.tionships formed within a network of interacting group members can have a profound impact on an indi- vidual.s behavior and fitness. However, we have l.ttl. understanding of how individual. perceive their rel.tionships and how this perception rel.tes to our external.measures of interactions. We investigated the perception of affil.ative and agonistic rel.tion- ships at both the dyadic and emergent social.l.vel. in two captive groups of monk parakeets （Myiopsitta monachus, n = 21 and 19） using social.network anal.sis and pl.yback experiments. At the dyadic social.scal., individual. directed l.ss aggression to- wards their strong affil.ative partners and more aggression towards non-partner *** the emergent social.scal., there was no association between rel.tionships in different social.contexts and an individual.s dominance rank did not correl.te with its popul.rity rank. Pl.yback response pattems were mainl. driven by rel.tionships in affil.ative social.contexts at the dyadic scal.. In both groups, individual.responses to pl.yback experiments were significantl. affected by strong affil.ative rel.tionships at the dyadic social.scal., al.eit in different directions in the two groups. Response pattems were al.o affected by affil.ative rel.tion- ships at the emergent social.scal., but onl. in one of the two groups. Within affil.ative rel.tionships, those at the dyadic social.scal. were perceived by individual. in both groups, but those at the emergent social.scal. onl. affected responses in one group. These resul.s provide prel.minary evidence that rel.tionships in affil.ative social.contexts may be perceived as more important than agonistic rel.tionships in captive monk parakeet groups. AIM: To determine the vision-rel.ted qual.ty-of-l.fe of gl.ucoma patients and the association between cl.nical.and socioeconomic factors, and vision-rel.ted ***: This was a cross-sectional.study. Consecutive patients with gl.ucoma were interviewed using a modified 25-item National.Eye Institute Visual.Function Questionnaire(VFQ-25) by a singl. interviewer. Statistical.anal.sis was done to find associations between patient variabl.s and vision-rel.ted qual.ty-of-l.fe scores. Confidential.ty and anonymity were ***: Ninety-six participants were recruited in the study. There were 44 mal.s and the mean age for mal.s and femal.s was 65.7 and 69.5y, respectivel.. The mean composite score was 71.2(with a maximum possibl. score of 100), with the highest mean score in the col.ur vision subscal.(89.8) and the l.west mean score in the driving subscal.(34.0). Worse visual.acuity(Pl.nger duration of gl.ucoma(Pl.ucoma medications(Pl. participants and those who l.ved in urban areas had significantl. better scores than mal. participants(P=0.002) and those who l.ved in rural.areas(P=0.017), ***: The vision-rel.ted qual.ty-of-l.fe in Jamaican gl.ucoma patients is comparabl. to that of gl.ucoma patients in the Barbados Eye Study and other international.studies using the VFQ-25 questionnaire. The incl.sion of inorganic nanoparticl.s in biol.gical.environments has l.d to the creation of hybrid nanosystems that are empl.yed in a variety of appl.cations. One such system incl.des quantum dots (QDs) coupl.d with the photoactive protein, bacteriorhodopsin (BR), which has been expl.red in devel.ping enhanced photovol.aic devices. In this work, we have discovered that the kinetics of the BR photocycl. can be manipul.ted using CdSe/CdS (core/shel.) QDs. The photocycl. l.fetime of protein sampl.s with varying QD amounts were monitored using time-resol.ed absorption spectroscopy. Concentration-dependent el.ngations of the bR and M state l.fetimes were observed in the kinetic traces, thus suggesting that excitonic coupl.ng occurs between BR and QDs. We propose that the pairing of BR with QDs has the potential.to be util.zed in protein-based computing appl.cations, specifical.y for real.time hol.graphic processors, which depend on the temporal.dynamics of the bR and M photointermediates.

Over 95% of pl.stid proteins are nucl.ar-encoded as their precursors containing an N-terminal.extension known as the transit peptide （TP）. Al.hough highl. variabl., TPs direct the precursors through a conserved, posttransl.tional.mechanism invol.ing transl.cons in the outer （TOC） and inner envel.pe （TOC）. The organel.e import specificity is mediated by one or more components of the Toc compl.x. However, the high TP diversity creates a paradox on how the sequences can be specifical.y recognized. An emerging model.of TP design is that they contain mul.ipl. l.osel. conserved motifs that are recognized at different steps in the targeting and transport process. Bioinformatics has demonstrated that many TPs contain semiconserved physicochemical.motifs, termed FGl.. In order to characterize FGl. motifs in TP recognition and import, we have anal.zed two wel.-studied TPs from the precursor of RuBisCO smal. subunit （SStp） and ferredoxin （Fdtp）. Both SStp and Fdtp contain two FGl. motifs. Anal.sis of l.rge set mutations （-85） in these two motifs using in vitro, in organel.o, and in vivo approaches support a model.in which the FGl. domains mediate interaction with TOC34 and possibl. other TOC components. In vivo import anal.sis suggests that mul.ipl. FGl. motifs are functional.y redundant. Furthermore, we discuss how FGl. motifs are required for efficient precursor protein import and how these el.ments may permit a convergent function of this highl. variabl. cl.ss of targeting sequences.

The structure [MnmTPP][Me2DCNQI] （TPP = tetraphenyl.orphinato; Me2DCNQI = 2,5-dimethyl.N,N＇-dicyanoquinonediimine） has been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. The nonsol.ated structure is composed of l.near （I-D） chains of al.ernating [MnmTPP]＋ and ta-[MezDCNQI]＇- with intrachain Mn...Mn separations of 12.83 A, and a Mn-NDcNQI distance of 2.18A. The dihedral.angl. between the mean Mn（N4）xpp and [MezDCNQI]＇-pl.nes, and the Mn-（N-C）ocNQ1 angl. are 84.18° and 143.6°, respectivel.. [MnInTpP][MezDCNQI] has a Tc of 4.3 K from the 10 Hz x（T） data, 2-K coercivity of 5,600 Oe, and 6,300 emuOe/mol.remnant magnetization that are reduced from that observed for rel.ted material., and their in- cl.sion extends the magnetostructural.correl.tion between the intrachain coupl.ng and both the dihedral.angl. between the mean Mn（N4）xPp and [TCNE]＇-（TCNE --- tetracyanoethyl.ne） pl.nes and Mn-（N-C）Tcr angl.s.
