BACKGROUnD neurogenic heterotopic ossification is an acquired serious complication described in patients with central nervous system disorders and defined by bone formation in non-osseous *** SUMMARY We present an unusual case of a 13-yr-old boy presenting with hip pain and severe gait impairment 5 mo after the diagnosis of hemiplegia following a spontaneous intracerebral *** tomography revealed bilateral heterotopic ossification of both the paretic and the non-paretic limbs,with entrapment of the sciatic *** choice of surgical or nonsurgical management of such patients depends on the timing of diagnosis,the symptoms,and the extent of maturation of the ossified *** resection remains the only treatment with proven,evidence-based *** choice of surgical approach largely depends on the location of the ossified *** We believe the plane of dissection presented is a satisfactory option for resection of a posteromedial mass and sciatic nerve release.

Microstructure is closely related to techno-functional properties in microencapsulated powders intended to protect bioactive compounds. Soursop leaves provide phytochemicals that need to be protected to ensure their functionality. This investigation aimed to study the microstructure of microcapsules containing soursop leaves extract and its linkage with physical and chemical characteristics of the resulting powder. Microcapsules were prepared by spray drying using gum Arabic and maltodextrin as encapsulating agents at 5 and 10%. Powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, particle size analysis, solubility, infrared spectroscopy and encapsulation efficiency. Microphotographs showed spherical shape particles ranging from 0.25 to 13.87 μm, where the particles morphology depended on the concentration and the type of the encapsulant used. At higher concentration of encapsulant, there was an increase in the sphericity, integrity, size, and surface smoothness of particles. This relationship was inverse for solubility in treatments with gum Arabic. The extract encapsulation was confirmed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and encapsulation efficiency index, revealing that the treatment with maltodextrin at 10% showed a better capability for entrapment (72.12%). The results evidence that microstructure of microcapsules is closely linked to the type and concentration of encapsulant, which in turn determine the physical and chemical characteristics of powders intended for instant drinks solubility and entrapping soursop bioactive compounds.

Despite all efforts,long-term changes in the adult sex ratios of breeding duck populations are still unclear;this uncertainty is especially true for male-bias populations,which are often under the scrutiny of researchers lacking convenient results for the active protection of endangered *** with male-bias populations are usually strongly affected by a decline in population size that leads to a higher extinction *** this study,we examined our long-term data of the abundance of breeding populations in six duck species(Mallard Anas platyrhynchos,Gadwall Mareca strepera,Red-crested Pochard netta rufina,Common Pochard Aythya ferina,Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula,and Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula)from fishponds in South Bohemia,Czechia,between 2004 and *** evidence was used to assess long-term changes in the adult sex ratio in these breeding populations and investigate the possible effects of the nAO index(north Atlantic Oscillation index)on them,indicating climate conditions in *** determined a long-term decrease of the proportion of females in the breeding season in two of the six examined species:Common Pochard and Red-crested Pochard,which is driven by the long-term increase in the number of males in contrast to the decreasing or stable number of females likely caused by different migration behaviours between females and *** the case of Common Pochard,in breeding populations,we estimated 60-65%of males in the early 2000s rising to 75-80%in the early ***,we establish no significant effects linked to climate conditions of the previous winter in these species as a crucial cause of the changes of the proportion of females in the breeding population.

This case presents an unusual transposition of an impacted canine on the central incisor that provides a multidisciplinary approach to its resolution. The patient comes to the consultation for mobility of the central incisor. Clinically, tooth mobility was confirmed with tooth crowding and persistence of the temporary canine. Cone beam tomography (CBCT) observed the atypical position of the permanent canine that caused root resorption of the ipsilateral central incisor and the need to extract both teeth. The conservative treatment of the bone structures during the dental enucleation of the impacted canine carried out by odontosection and the immediate bone grafting of the defect projected an acceptable regeneration of the bone volume for the insertion of the implant. The orthodontic treatment managed to correct the bite, position the upper premolar in the place of the canine tooth and maintain the space to place the implant in the central incisor. The three-year follow-up shows maintenance of the peri-implant crestal bone level, the success of orthodontic treatment with recovery of the patient’s function and aesthetics.
