Attributes of stand-age-dependent forest determine technosol fertility of Atlantic forest re-growing on mining tailings in Mariana,Brazil

Understanding how soil fertility changes due to environmental conditions and stand-age-dependent forest attributes is important for local-scale forest *** evaluated the effects of stand-age-dependent forest attributes(plant community composition and litter stock)on soil and technosol fertility across two second-growth Atlantic forests(SGF)after the deposition of mining tailings in Mariana,southeastern *** hypothesized that technosol fertility in the SGF tailings is positively affected by plant community composition variability,stand age,and litter *** used total exchangeable bases and organic matter as fertility indicators for technosol and soil,and species composition and litter stock as stand-age-dependent forest *** results showed significant differences in the stand-age-dependent forest attributes and soil chemical properties between the two forest patches(SGF tailing and SGF non-tailing)***,there was a marked gradient of litter storage and fertility between soil and technosol that can be important forest recovery indicators for the affected plant ***,according to the tested models,we corroborated the hypothesis that technosol fertility is positively affected by stand age,plant community composition variability,and litter stock,which may contribute considerably to forest recovery on *** results demonstrate that the fertility predictors analyzed to explain the forest recovery on tailings can also be considered as ecological indicators for assessing forest restoration in areas impacted by mining tailings in Mariana.

Obesity is a chronic disease which requires treatment. As lifestyle interventions alone hardly ever result in long-term weight loss, pharmacotherapy is an impor-tant adjunct to lifestyle measures to improve the induc-tion and maintenance of weight loss. Owing to the lim-ited options currently available for the pharmacological treatment of obesity, it is imperative to develop new safe compounds. This study aims to review the current medications approved by European Medicines Agency and United States Food and Drug Administration （FDA） for the treatment of obesity, focusing essentially on their benefits and risks, as well as on the new drugs which are presently under clinical trials. Moreover, it lists the anti-obesity agents that have been recently withdrawn from the market. A revision of the scientifc literature was carried out, through a search on Pubmedfor papers published from January 2010 to January2013. Orlistat （Xenical？） is currently the only long-termpharmacotherapy for obesity available in the Europeanmarket, as rimonabant and sibutramine were with-drawn in 2008 and 2010, respectively, due to serious psychiatric and cardiovascular adverse effects. Lorca-serin （Belviq？） and the association of phentermine and topiramate （QsymiaTM） were recently approved by FDA. Orlistat suppresses appetite inhibiting gastrointestinal lipase, being its adverse effects mostly gastrointestinal. Lorcaserin activates 5-HT2C receptors, phentermine is a norepinephrine releasing drug, and topiramate is an anticonvulsivant drug with weight loss properties.

Aims The Inclusive Niche Hypothesis has not been validated for plants using ecophysiological *** few experiments have measured growth and competition but not the physiological response of plants.A metallophyte plant that hyperaccumulates aluminium(Al),Plantago almogravensis,showed a defined spa-tial distribution by occurring mostly on vegetation gaps associ-ated with metalliferous areas(geochemical islands).This case was used to determine,in situ,whether the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis was suitable to explain the extent of the species real-ized *** The vegetation associated with *** geochemical islands in the SW coast of Portugal was *** biotic(neighbouring plants)and abiotic(edaphic)components of the niche were cor-related with parameters of the plant’s ecological and physiological performances(plant density and cover;leaf C and N concentration and isotopic composition;growth).The results were obtained using image analysis,abundance and morphological measures,isotopic signatures and chemical *** Findings The species showed better physiological performance where its ecological performance was lower due to trade-offs with environ-mental *** species’realized niche was mostly limited by shrub competition and soil *** limits contribute to explain the rarity status of the species:the species has a poor capacity to compete but,due to an enhanced Al-tolerance and Al-hyperaccumulator trait,has the ability to find refuge in geochem-ical islands that are too harsh for most other *** work,based on ecophysiological field studies,provides support for the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis relating to plant species.

This paper describes a microprogrammed architecture for an embedded coprocessor that is able to control IEEE 1149.1 to IEEE 1149.7 test infrastructures, and explains how to expand the supported test command set. The coprocessor uses a fast simplex link (FSL) channel to interface a 32-bit MicroBlaze CPU, but it can work with any microprocessor core that accepts this simple FIFO-based interface method. The implementation cost (logic resource usage for a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA) and the performance data (operating frequency) are presented for a test command set comprising two parts: 1) the full IEEE 1149.1 structural test operations;2) a subset of IEEE 1149.7 operations selected to illustrate the implementation of advanced scan formats.

The paper presents to managers＇ and scholars＇ reasons for using models to determine the strategic importance of innovation and its potential value creation. The model of value based innovation （VBI） provides a clear definition of the adequate value curve to be pursued in any innovation action, from strategic definition to operational product conceptualization and production. The VBI model has been applied in strategic planning in over 100 SMEs throughout Portugal and USA by the authors and other consultant companies. The VBI model provides the practitioners and scholars with a pragmatic tool to determine innovation＇s value creation. Connecting this information with strategic thinking and planning will reduce risk and avoid failure. The theoretical model when converted into a technological application provides an immediate insight into the most adequate strategic innovation to be chosen by top management and operational product developers. The paper demonstrates the relation between innovation and value creation.

Leriche syndrome with coronary artery disease and lower limb gangrene:two case reports

Nowadays one of the most important strategies in the European Union and in the World to solve energy problems is RES energy production. Many investments and financial supports are being done and implemented in many countries. However it is very relevant to have parameters and merit figures that help to evaluate the investments done and solutions implemented and that can be useful in the definition of future pathways and energy systems. In this work are calculated efficiency indicators to RES technologies for three EU’s Member States, namely Portugal, Spain and Germany that are internationally recognized to have a significant role in RES implementation and integration.

After the first detection of the gram-negative bacterium,Xylella fastidiosa multiplex in Portugal,in January 2019,a“Demarcated Area”was delimited and an“Action Plan”to control the pathogen has been *** is considered one of the greatest threats to plant health worldwide and leads to loss of forests vitality and *** current study was developed till June 2020,with the objective to understand the dimension of the issue worldwide and in Portugal,analyzing the state-of-the-art on the biology,dispersion,symptoms,control and risks associated with this bacterium(Research Phase).In the Prospecting Phase,we collected 5 branches with 5-8 leaves,from the four quadrants of the tree,wrapping and labeling them-so 2,261 samples were collected and sent to the laboratory for *** was possible to determine that the two initial outbreaks were not an isolated case,as 107 additional outbreaks were detected in other places,revealing a much more worrying panorama,requiring further analysis on the real impact of this bacterial strain on the natural *** the end of this study the demarcated area covered about 62,000 *** most affected species was lavender with 30%of positive outbreaks,followed by gorse with 22%,and rosemary with 11%.Spread of Phillaenus spumarius and *** indicates that insect vector and transport links appear to be dispersal facilitators together with Douro *** eradication is unfeasible to achieve in the coming years,containment will be the most appropriate strategy.
